Drops against ticks for dogs on the withers: features of use and how to choose the best?

Composition of the drug

The main active ingredient contained in Prak-Tik drops (that is their correct name) is pyriprole.

This is a new generation pesticide, in many ways an analogue of the well-known fipronil. Like the latter, piriprole disrupts the functioning of the nervous system of parasites. At first she gets extremely overstimulated and then burns out. First the tick is paralyzed, and then it dies.

In addition, the composition contains additional compounds:

  • Diethylene glycol ether.
  • Butyl hydroxide toluene.

All auxiliary products are characterized by increased volatility and extremely high volatility. They are needed in the composition of the drug so that the active substance can be evenly distributed over the surface of the skin, also penetrating the lower layers of the epithelium, as well as hair follicles and sebaceous glands.

Appearance – oily transparent liquid of a yellowish (sometimes completely colorless) hue. It has a rather pungent and unpleasant odor. Packaged in polypropylene dispensing pipettes intended for single use. Available in four forms designed to treat both the smallest and largest dogs (from 0.4 to 5 ml).

It must be remembered that the medicine in this case differs not only in the volume of packaging, but also in the concentration of the active substance.

Pharmacological properties

Piriprol, which is part of the drug, has a pronounced contact insecto-acaricidal effect against the preimaginal and imaginal phases of development of insects parasitizing on dogs. Active against fleas (Ctenocephalides canis), lice (Linognathus setosus) and lice (Trichodectes canis), as well as ixodes ticks - Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Dermacentor reticulatus, Ixodes scapularis, Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum. The mechanism of action of piriprole is to block GABA-dependent (GABA - gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptors of parasites, disrupting the transmission of nerve impulses, which leads to paralysis and death of ectoparasites. When applied to the skin, the drug is not absorbed, but gradually, over 24 hours, is distributed over the surface of the body and, reserved in the sebaceous glands, has a long-term insecticidal and acaricidal effect in places where ectoparasites are localized. In terms of the degree of impact on the body of warm-blooded animals, the drug is classified as a moderately dangerous substance; in recommended doses it does not have skin irritation, resorptive toxic, embryotoxic or teratogenic effects. The drug is toxic to bees, as well as fish and other aquatic organisms.

Storage conditions

As we have already written, the medicine contains volatile components. This means that it is necessary to observe important storage conditions on which the effectiveness and safety of the drug depends:

  • Storage temperatures should never rise above 27° Celsius. However, the medicine also does not tolerate frost, and therefore the minimum storage temperature is 0° Celsius.
  • It is unacceptable to store the medicine in a place where it may be exposed to direct sunlight. UV radiation leads to the destruction of the structure of the drug. It may either lose its effectiveness or become poisonous.
  • In addition, it is necessary to carefully isolate the storage location from access by children and pets.

Finally, there is another nuance. Only whole dispensing pipettes can be stored. Opened tubes must be used immediately!

Indications for use

The manufacturer indicates the following indications for use:

  • Destruction of ixodid parasitic ticks that attack the dog during walks. In addition, the medicine has a repellent effect, being able to prevent tick infestation by scaring off parasites in advance.
  • The drug works well against fleas, lice and lice. The medicine successfully prevents re-infection of the animal.
  • Drops help prevent mosquito and sandfly bites, which is important for regions unfavorable for dirofilariasis (i.e., there are cases of heartworm infection).

Instructions for use

The manufacturer includes fairly detailed instructions for use with each package of the drug (which we would also advise you to study), but still some points in it may cause difficulties for breeders who have nothing to do with veterinary medicine. We will try to talk about the nuances of using the medicine in a simpler way.

The basic rule that should first be followed during treatment is the need to apply the medicine exclusively to clean, dry skin without damage.

Failure to comply with this recommendation leads to massive penetration of the drug components into the general bloodstream. This is fraught with serious poisoning, and therefore we would not recommend violating the manufacturer’s recommendations.

The frequency of treatment depends on the time of year and the situation with ticks in a particular area. As a rule, veterinarians advise treating pets with drops during the warm season throughout the season. But! Treatment is allowed no more than once a month.

Important! With more frequent use, the drug exhibits cumulative properties, being able to accumulate massively in the skin and skin glands. Over time, this will inevitably lead to chronic intoxication, fraught with serious consequences for the animal.

If the drug is used in cases where an infected animal already suffers from dermatitis caused by parasite bites, or it exhibits symptoms of blood parasitic infections, treatment must be accompanied by the use of symptomatic therapy (anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, healing ointments and liniments, antibiotics, etc.).

Remember! It is highly undesirable to apply drops to wet skin. Also, you should not wash your pet two days before treatment and one day after.

If for some reason the pet had to be “rinsed” a day before the procedure, it should be thoroughly dried with a hairdryer. This is especially important in the case of representatives of long-haired breeds.

Please note that the use of drops simultaneously with other insecticidal agents is not allowed due to the high risk of toxic damage to the liver.

The use of Prak-Tik for treating pregnant and lactating bitches, although officially permitted, is not recommended by practicing veterinarians. In such cases, you should choose repellents of natural origin that are safe for unborn puppies.
Both upon first use and upon complete withdrawal, the medicine does not cause any pronounced effects.

Doses and method of administration

The drug is administered to animals once by drip application to dry, intact skin. The pipette is taken out of the package and placed vertically with the spout facing up. Tap the narrow part of the pipette so that the contents remain in the main part. Break off the tip of the easily broken off tip along the dotted line. In dogs, the fur is spread between the shoulder blades at the base of the neck and then, pressing the pipette, the solution is applied to the skin in places inaccessible to licking. The minimum therapeutic dose of the drug is 0.1 ml per 1 kg of animal weight, which corresponds to 12.5 mg of pyriprole per 1 kg of animal weight. The death of insects parasitizing the animal occurs within 24 hours after treatment. The protective effect of the drug after a single treatment of the animal lasts for 4 weeks. To destroy ectoparasites, dogs are treated once. Repeated treatments of animals are carried out according to entomological indications, but not more than once a month. When treating allergic dermatitis caused by insects, it is advisable to use the drug in combination with drugs for pathogenetic and symptomatic therapy.

Dosage of Prak-Tik drops

Before use, you must remove the dispenser pipette from the packaging and carefully roll up the cap. We remind you that it is disposable, and therefore it cannot be screwed back on.

After this, holding the pipette in the fingers of your left hand, you need to spread the fur apart with the fingers of your right hand and carefully squeeze the contents of the dispenser onto the skin.

Attention! Drops can be applied only to those areas of the skin where the pet cannot lick them off. Ideally, this is the withers and base of the skull. When treating large and especially large dogs (up to 50 kg or more), the dose must be divided into several parts, each of which is applied along the spinal column.

The dosage is quite simple. It is believed that the minimum sufficient amount of medication is a dose of 0.1 ml of the drug for each kilogram of the dog’s body weight.

Dog weight, kgNumber and volume of pipettes required for processingAmount of active substance, mg
Up to 4.50.428
Until 111.130.5
Up to 222.225
Up to 50528.5
Over 50 kgIn such cases, a combination of dosing pipettes is used

If the dog's weight is significantly more than 50 kg, the medicine should be used in a standard dose of 0.1 ml per kilogram of weight. It's best to leave this to your veterinarian, but if necessary, you can select the right dose by putting together a combination of pipettes of the appropriate size (but this is quite dangerous).

Important! Skipping treatments should be avoided. If for some reason it was not possible to apply the drops on time, it is necessary to resume their application at any convenient time. Exceeding or otherwise changing the recommended dose is strictly prohibited!

Side effects

If you use Prak-Tik drops strictly in accordance with the above instructions and dosage, side effects will probably not develop, since in ordinary cases their occurrence is extremely unlikely. Everything changes if the owner goes too far with the overdose.

In such cases, the following symptoms may develop:

  • The answer comes from the skin. The places where the drug was applied become very red, and the animal is itchy. If the pet is not predisposed to allergies and does not suffer from individual sensitivity to the components of the drug, all these signs disappear spontaneously within four days.
  • Symptoms of central nervous system depression may develop. The animal's coordination of movements is impaired, it constantly trembles and breathes heavily, and sometimes the dog begins to drool profusely.

Contraindications

Since the main active ingredient in the drug is a rather strong and toxic insecticide, there are contraindications and they must be taken seriously:

  • If the animal suffers from any infections. This is especially true in cases where the dog has impaired liver and/or renal function.
  • It is not advisable to apply drops to the skin of animals recovering from serious illnesses.
  • It is prohibited to use the medicine to treat dogs suffering from individual intolerance to the components of the drug. Dogs prone to developing allergic reactions are treated with extreme caution.
  • It is prohibited to use the medicine if the animal has not reached eight weeks of age and/or weighs less than two kilograms.

Rules for using the drug

According to the instructions in the package of Praktik drops, to completely get rid of fleas and ticks, it is enough to treat the dog just once. To get this effect, you must follow all the processing steps described in detail in the instructions, and also not violate the dosage.

Praktik oily drops are sold in pet stores and veterinary clinics. They must be used in the following sequence:

  1. Remove one pipette containing the product from the box.
  2. Turn the pipette vertically and allow the product to move from the spout to the main container. To make this happen faster, you can lightly tap the top of the dispenser with your finger. When all the product has flowed out of the spout, you can carefully break it off.
  3. Having selected an area on the dog’s withers, carefully part the fur on it and drip the product onto the skin without bites or damage. Make sure that the dog cannot reach the treated area with its tongue and lick off the drug. Owners consider the base of the dog's neck to be one of the best places to apply the product.
  4. If the dog is a large breed, then you need to treat several areas of the body along the back. For high-quality processing, 3 such places are enough. The sides of the dog are considered an unsuitable place for treatment; the product may drain from them.

The effect of using the drug occurs within a day when fighting fleas. Ticks die completely 2 days after treatment. The maximum protective effect from the Practice lasts for 30 days.

If your pet suffers from skin diseases, such as dermatitis, then before using Practica it is mixed with a medicine prescribed by a veterinarian to treat these diseases. The product interacts well with other drugs without causing allergies or other side effects.

You should use the product with caution if your animal is infected with an infectious disease or if you notice constant weakness. Mixing the product with other insecticides to achieve better results is strictly prohibited.

During pregnancy, your dog should consult your veterinarian before treatment.

Puppies under 8 weeks of age should only be treated with Practitioner under the close supervision of a veterinarian.

To prevent fleas and ticks, you can use the drug no more than once every 4 weeks.

Analogs

Since insecticidal drops are a common form of release, Prak-Tik’s analogues are quite numerous:

  • Drops "Bars".

  • "Inspector".
  • "Celandine".
  • Frontline.
  • "Dana."
  • Drops Insectal.

But! Almost all of the drugs we list contain fipronil as an active ingredient. The latter, as we have already noted, is an analogue of pyriprole.

These compounds are, in fact, almost the same, but pyriprole has an important advantage - it is very water-resistant, and therefore the shelf life of drugs based on it is longer. It sticks to the skin much better, water doesn’t wash it off well. That’s why “Praktik” is better suited for service and hunting dogs.

Precautionary measures

No special precautions are required, but do not forget about the simplest hygiene standards. In particular, we would not recommend eating, drinking, smoking, or touching your face. In addition, we recommend using disposable medical gloves when processing. Once the work is completed, you must wash your hands thoroughly with warm soapy water.

If the medicine gets on open areas of the skin and eyes, they are washed with large portions of cold water. For 24 hours after treatment, you do not need to pet your pet or allow it near small children . Used dispensing pipettes are disposed of on a general basis, along with other household waste. No other conditions are required.

Precautions when using drops

When using Praktik drops, you must take precautions and personal hygiene. After opening the drug it is strictly not recommended: . Drink. Eating. Smoking. Touch your face and hair.

  • Drink.
  • Eating.
  • Smoking.
  • Touch your face and hair.

If you have abrasions or scratches on your hands, work with the drug only with gloves. After treating your dog, you should wash your hands and face with warm, soapy water.

If the drug gets on the mucous membranes, it is washed off for 3-5 minutes with a large volume of running water. If the drug has been swallowed, you should consult a doctor.

If any suspicious symptoms related to the functioning of the central nervous system appear, you need to limit your mobility and consult a doctor.

After treatment, the dog must be ensured that it does not have close contact with children, puppies or kittens for 24 hours. Used pipettes and boxes of the drug are strictly prohibited from being used for domestic purposes.
