Thais have six main colors:
- Seal Point - seal point (dark, “seal”).
- Blue point - blue point (blue).
- Chocolate point - chocolate point.
- Lilac point - lilac point (lilac).
- Red point - red point (red, red).
- Cream point - cream point (cream).
By “point” we mean not a solid color, but a dotted color. Thai cats have a white coat as their main coat color. Depending on their color, certain parts of their body are painted a darker shade:
- “mask” on the nose, eyes, parts of the cheeks and forehead;
- ears;
- legs;
- Feet;
- back;
- tail.
It is interesting that the “point” coloring does not immediately adorn “Thais” - they are born white. Color appears only in the first year of life. Its development does not stop there - the cat continues to darken a little with age.

The Thai cat is a very beautiful, graceful cat with an unusual point color. Thais are actually the same Siamese cats that were described in ancient manuscripts. Siamese cats have changed a little as a result of breeding work, their faces have become more elongated and their bodies have become more graceful. And the old type of cats began to be called Thai.
frost point
Otherwise, the color is called lilac point and was recognized by experts even later than the previous one - in 1954.
The base of the coat is white, but it is set off by warm ivory. The beauty is in the markings, which decorate the cat with a lilac-pink color with a gray tint. The markings do not stand out too much, they seem pale, but still this is one of the leading colors.
The eyes are blue, the iris may be even lighter. They are lighter than other representatives of the breed, but not pale. The cat has a cool color, and the points practically do not darken throughout its life.
There are even younger varieties of colors of Thai cats, photos of some are presented in the article. The new shades are inspired by fashion trends, we invite you to consider them in more detail.
History of the origin of Thai cats
The birthplace of Siamese cats is the ancient city of Siam (in modern times Thailand); it was from there that the first representatives of this breed were brought to Europe in 1884. Breeders loved these cute cats so much that almost immediately felinologists began breeding this breed.
Over time, in the process of sectioning, Siamese cats acquired extremely refined forms. The head of the Siamese, bred through selection, became wedge-shaped and the body graceful. Seals that remained unchanged with a round head, massive body and round eyes began to be called Thai.
Interesting fact: Siamese cats have been known in Russia since the 17th century. This breed was first described by the naturalist Peter Simon Pallas.
Thai and Siamese cats have always been especially revered; they lived at Buddhist temples and in royal palaces. These beautiful cats were especially loved by emperors and the aristocracy. It is known that the Siamese king Chulalongkorn gave Nicholas II two hundred Siamese cats. Some cats remained to live in the palace and were favorites of the Imperial family.
In our country, breeders reached Siamese cats only towards the end of the 1980s, and they had not yet had time to change the breed, which is why there are so many Thai cats left in Russia. In 1990, Germany finally approved the official standard for the Thai breed.
Today, the Thai breed is closed, but by decision of the Siamese cat breeders club, any pet can undergo an official examination. If the cat meets the standard, it will receive a special certificate of conformity to this breed. Animals with such a certificate can participate in breeding.
Possible problems
There are no serious problems with this breed, but when buying such a pet you should consider a number of points:
- Cats are very attached to their owner, and at first they will follow on his heels.
- Since childhood, kittens are very talkative, and this does not go away with age.
- Since the breed was bred in Thailand, the pets do not tolerate cold climates well.
- Animals are very curious, so it is better to close doors and windows tightly, as cats are able to escape.
Thai cat - description of the breed
Modern Thai cats fully correspond to the description of the ancient Siamese. These are neatly built, muscular animals with a round head and a rather dense but slender body. Thai limbs are strong and muscular, round paws, paw pads are painted in dark colors. Tail, long and tapered to the tip. The ears are large, the pointed tips of which are slightly rounded. Small hair brushes are allowed. The eyes are large, lemon or almond shaped. The iris of the eyes is blue.
The fur of Thai cats is soft and short, somewhat similar to mink fur. The undercoat is weakly expressed. The main feature of Thai and Siamese cats is the unusual color of the animal. The overall tone of the cat is light or almost white. The muzzle, tail, tips of the paws and other places where blood circulation is poor are painted a darker color.
Interesting fact: The color of an animal depends on body temperature and ambient temperature. Color point is an unusual form of albinism in which coloring occurs only in cold parts of the body where blood circulation is poor. The animal's limbs, muzzle and tail, can be not only brown or black, but also gray, purple, caramel, or coffee color.
Kittens are born white or milky in color. Over time, the muzzle, paws and tail become dark in color, and a dark color also appears on the back. In this case, only the upper part of the hair on the back is dyed, while the lower part remains light.
Specifics of tabby point color
Cats with tabby point color are very impressive. In the USA it is better known as links point. Instead of the usual solid points for Thais, the markings on their body are formed by clearly visible stripes, the colors of which can be varied. The name of such a cat always indicates color:
- seal tabby point if the stripes are black;
- blue tabby point with bluish-gray markings;
- red tabby point when they are reddish-gold.
The tabby point color is characterized by a distinct pattern in the form of the letter “M”, into which the stripes on the animal’s forehead are folded. They also cover the fur around the eyes, clearly highlighting the nose. Specks are visible in the mustache area. On the front paws, the markings take the form of torn rings.
They originate from the fingers and head upward. Contrasting stripes clearly appear on the hips. The fur on the hind legs at the back is solid color. It is limited by the hock joint.
The ears are monochromatic; on the outside there is always a light spot on them, reminiscent of a thumbprint. If the animal's color is diluted or weakened, it will be less noticeable. The inside of the ear is lighter. The tail is covered with stripes in the form of unfinished rings. The skin on the nose is pink, outlined by the main color. On the bottom of the paws, its tone matches the color of the markings.

The Seal Tabby Point color is relatively young, but this Thai cat quickly became popular. In Russia, its appearance coincided with the breeding of the Neva Masquerade. Selection work with Thais in England has been carried out for a long time. Many colors were obtained by the middle of the 20th century. The tabby point was born by chance.
At the end of the 90s, in a nursery in St. Petersburg, where Thai and Siberian cats were bred, a male and a female belonging to different breeds were mated. Her babies turned out to be white, like all Thais, and Siberian.
The owners of the nursery liked the unusual colored stripes on the kittens’ fur. Subsequently, the Seal Point and Seal Tabby Point Siberians formed a new breed - the Neva Masquerade. The tabby color also passed on to the Thais obtained from random crossing. The babies' fur was also different. Their parents had it short and half-long. The offspring turned out the same, but several kittens in the litter turned out to be “downy.”
Popular colors of Thai cats
Thai cats have a beautiful point color, characteristic of this breed.
There are a lot of point colors and the most popular of them are presented here:

- Tortie point - the color can combine black and red points on a general beige background.
Regardless of color, the animal’s body should not have pronounced spots and stripes on the back and belly of the animal.
Seal Point
The color of the Thai seal point cat is standard, classic and is very common. The main color of a cat's coat is light cream, which softly fades into a light shade of brown. The points are often dark brown and sometimes almost black in color, the markings are contrasting, so this color of the Thai cat is often found at exhibitions.
As already mentioned, the eyes should have a sky blue color, and if a green iris is noticeable on them, then this is a huge minus, as is the presence of light hairs on the paws.
Character and habits of Thai cats
There is an opinion among people that Thais are aggressive cats with a bad disposition who do not allow people to approach them. But this is not true at all. This myth appeared among the people due to the fact that offspring from Thais and ordinary street cats are born with congenital genetic diseases of the musculoskeletal system. With this disease, cats experience constant pain in the spine and tail.
Purebred Thais are born healthy. These cats are very sociable, they perfectly guess the mood of their owner and can easily adapt to him. If you are sad or in a difficult life situation, the cat will definitely come to your aid and try to support you. He will sit on your chest and start purring and licking your hands.
Thais are very loyal, love their owner and try to be close to people all the time. However, cats do not tolerate bad treatment. If you show aggression towards a cat, he will do everything in defiance and take revenge for any insults caused to him. Thais are very playful, they can run around the apartment for hours, climb into the most secluded corners, and play with any objects they find.
Interesting fact: Thais treat children quite well, they love to play with them, but they do not allow themselves to be squeezed, and if the cat is hurt, it can bite painfully.
Thais have extraordinary mental abilities. They can learn to follow simple commands such as sit, lie down, fetch a ball. Cats understand human language very well.
Among the negative character traits, special obstinacy should be noted. If the cat decides that he wants to spend the night on the owner's bed, it is useless to drive him away, he will still achieve what he wants. All we have to do is come to terms with this.
Interesting facts about Thai cats
All Thais are born completely white, but by the end of the first month of life, dark marks begin to appear on the animal’s body. The older the animal, the more dark tones predominate in the color.
Thais are true long-livers; the average life expectancy of this breed is 15-20 years. Thai cats have a very long gestation period of as much as 65 days, while the pregnancy of cats of other breeds lasts 55-60 days.
In the homeland of the Siamese, the death penalty was introduced in the Middle Ages for exporting cats of this breed from the country. Previously, Thai cats were kept in Buddhist monasteries, temples and palaces. Kittens of this breed are simply too active and inquisitive, they have an extraordinary mind, are easy to learn, but they also cause a lot of trouble for their owner, because they constantly crawl into all sorts of secluded places and take an active part in all matters.
Translated from Thai, the name Siamese translates as “moon diamond”. Kittens of this breed were often presented as gifts to royalty and other important persons. For example, Queen Elizabeth II received a Seal point kitten as a wedding gift. Russian Emperor Nicholas II received 200 kittens as a gift from the Siamese king.
When crossing Thais with cats of other breeds, offspring with serious genetic diseases are often born. The most common of them are diseases of the spine and musculoskeletal system. Therefore, when buying an animal, you need to pay special attention to the animal’s gait, the flexibility of the tail and the appearance of the animal.
Red point
One of the most interesting animal color options. The cat's coat is white, but a slight tint of apricot gives it a warm tint. The points are not even red, but red and gold in color, which stand out with bright spots. It is possible, but not desirable, to have small stripes on the marks.
The pads and nose are soft and pink. On them, as on the eyelids and lips, the presence of small freckles is welcome.
Blue eyes look especially bright against the background of this color! An incredibly beautiful combination, for which many people choose such cats (despite the fact that they are not the rarest).
Pros and cons of Thai cats
This breed has its positive and negative qualities.
The positive qualities include the following:
- Sociability. Thais are very sociable and love to spend a lot of time with their owner. They are able to guess the mood of the owner, try to console the person if he is in a bad mood;
- Devotion. Thais do not declare their love to their owner and do not caress at their feet like many cats, however, they are very attached to a person;
- Friendliness. Thais treat all family members quite well. They show moderate tolerance towards children, although if you start squeezing a Thai, he may bite;
- High level of intelligence. Thai kittens are very obedient, easy to train, easily accustomed to the tray and scratching post, and can follow some simple commands;
- Cats of this breed are excellent hunters, and if a cat is released into the garden, it will definitely bring back prey from the hunt;
- The animal's fur is short and does not need to be constantly combed and cleaned.
There are few disadvantages of the breed, but they still exist:
- Vengefulness. Yes, Thais are not evil, but they are quite vindictive and do not tolerate bad, let alone cruel, treatment of themselves. If you offend a cat, he will do everything in defiance. However, cats are quite easy-going and do not hold grudges against their owner for a long time. In order to make peace with the cat, it is enough to treat him with his favorite treat;
- Stubbornness. If a cat wants something, he will definitely get his way and force you to do it the way he wants.
Upbringing
By the time they move to a new home, Thai kittens have already mastered the basic rules of behavior well and know how to use a scratching post and litter box.
To make the process of getting used to a new place of residence quick and painless, try to create an environment for your baby that is similar to the one in which he spent the first months of his life. Talk to your pet calmly, without raising your voice unnecessarily. A Thai will quickly understand that if they are dissatisfied with him and loudly scold him, then he has really done something wrong. Keep the use of harsh measures to a minimum. Aggression can only breed aggression. You can calm an overly angry cat with a stream of cool water. This is not painful or humiliating for the royal cat, unlike physical punishment. Provide your baby with enough toys. This will distract him from mischief and protect your things from damage. Keep valuable items and papers out of reach of the animal.
Having a cat in the house is both a great joy and a huge responsibility. And this responsibility lies with the individual.
Breeding Thai cats
Mating cats and cats of the Thai breed is quite a complex and responsible process. Thai cats experience their first heat at the age of six months, however, the cat is ready for mating at the age of one and a half years. You should not breed a cat earlier, as early labor in a young cat can be difficult, and the offspring will be born weak.
Mating must take place in the cat's territory. In this case, the cat will feel more confident and nothing will distract him from his partner. In this case, the female must be provided with her usual food and tray. During the first mating, the cat may not allow the cat to approach her, behave aggressively, or lie on her side, preventing the cat from getting to her.
Mating games for Thais are the same as for all other cats. First, the male tries to approach the female, who hisses at him menacingly and drives him away. After several attempts, the male moves aside and pretends to be dozing. The female, discouraged by the lack of attention to lie down on the floor, begins to roll around on it and meow invitingly. When the cat approaches her, the cat chases him away again and this lasts until the cat gets tired of it and does not let the cat come to her.
The duration of sexual intercourse is about 10 seconds. After mating, the cat begins to roll contentedly on the floor, and the male begins to lick himself. Up to 12 contacts occur within a few days. A cat's pregnancy can only be known a few weeks after mating.
The main signs of pregnancy in cats are as follows:
- The cat is sick in the morning;
- The cat's nipples become very swollen;
- The cat becomes nervous and aggressive, its character changes;
- In the third week of pregnancy, fetuses can be detected by palpation.
Pregnancy in Thai cats lasts longer than usual, as much as 65 days. Little kittens are born blind, fluffy, completely white. Towards the end of the first month of life, the color of the kittens begins to change and points of dark tones appear on the animal’s face, tail, and ears.
Torty point
Only representatives of the female half of the Thai breed can boast of such a beautiful variegated coat color. For many people, this coloring came as a surprise, since it is almost impossible to recognize on kittens. From a white lump, as it grows up, a beautiful white cat grows with soft peach markings, on which there are speckles interspersed in all shades of black and red. In kittens, these inclusions are small or absent altogether, but appear later.
If you want a unique animal, then take a closer look at the torty point, because it is simply unrealistic to meet a twin by color. Each cat has a unique pattern on its points; it can even change as the animal grows older.
Caring for Thai cats
Thai cats are unpretentious animals and this breed does not require any special care. The cat must be combed every two weeks to remove dead hairs. You need to bathe the animal once a quarter. Cats do not like water, and it is better to bathe the animal with caution. Although, if a Thai is accustomed to water, he will experience this procedure quite calmly.
Interesting fact: By the way, many Thais can swim quite well. To prevent the animal from catching a cold, after bathing it must be wrapped in a soft and warm towel, and then dried well.
Once every two weeks, the cat’s ears need to be cleaned; this should be done carefully using cotton swabs. Once a week you need to trim the tips of the claws with special scissors. The color of a Thai largely depends on body temperature and the environment. In areas with poor blood circulation, the fur becomes darker, so if you do not want your cat's fur to darken prematurely, keep the animal warm.
Before you bring a kitten home, prepare your apartment for its arrival. Put away wires, cables, and valuables that the cat could break or damage. Remove dangerous and toxic substances away, close all cracks in which the cat could get stuck. Set up a sleeping place for the cat, a place for food and prepare a tray with filler. Thai cats are very playful, so to prevent the animal from getting bored, it is better to prepare toys for the cat in advance.
When you just bought a kitten, take preventive measures against parasites, even if at first glance the cat seems clean. Once every six months, the cat must be shown to the veterinarian in order to monitor the health of the animal. If you do not want the animal to bear offspring, it must be castrated. It is better to carry out this procedure at an early age, as kittens tolerate surgical interventions more easily.
Care and maintenance
Thai cats are easy to care for
Thai cats are not picky. They do not require special care and get along well in any home. When buying a kitten, you should acquire all the necessary equipment for a comfortable life for your pet.
Grooming takes minimal effort. It is enough to “wipe” the cat with wet hands once a week to remove loose hairs. Domestic Thais do not need bathing. They are quite clean and restore beauty on their own. An exception may be a young individual who managed to get dirty during research at home.
A scratching post will help you care for your claws . It is desirable that it be spacious and high, because Thai women love to climb, and this helps to grind off not only the front claws, but also scratches on the hind legs.
Teeth, ears - everything is like other cats. Regular brushing, an occasional handful of dry food, and periodic checkups with your veterinarian will help keep your pet healthy. It is also important to combat parasites in a timely manner, or better yet, to prevent their appearance.
When keeping a Thai cat, you need to take into account its love of exploration. She will definitely check every corner of the house. Windows will not be an exception, so you need to take care of the safety of the furry weasel by purchasing mosquito nets.
Diet of Thai cats
It is better to feed Thai cats with premium dry and concentrated ready-made food. In this case, you should carefully study the composition and refuse feed that contains an additive such as iodine. Thais' fur quickly darkens from such food.
From natural products, cats can be given the following products:
- Boiled vegetables;
- Porridges from various grain crops, which can be prepared with the addition of meat or offal;
- Thermally processed lean meat (beef, veal, chicken, rabbit, turkey);
- By-products (liver, kidneys, tongue, spleen, lungs);
- Fermented milk products (cottage cheese, cheese, sour cream);
- River fish (low-fat varieties, heat-treated).
It should be noted that Thai cats should not be given sea fish and seafood, as the high iodine content in these products causes the Thai fur to darken faster. In addition to food, you need to make sure that your cat always has fresh water in his bowl.
Pregnant and lactating cats need to increase the servings. It is also necessary to give animals ready-made vitamin and mineral complexes, which are sold in veterinary pharmacies. In order for your pussy to feel good, you need to create a balanced diet, paying attention to the quality of the products. To prevent the animal from being poisoned, uneaten leftover food should be thrown away and bowls should be thoroughly washed several times a day with warm water and soap.
How to choose a kitten
If you want to buy a pet of this breed, you need to carefully consider and pay attention to the following things:
- Eye color . Pets of pure Thai breed and without defects, have bright or deep blue eyes.
- A rounded muzzle with a strong chin, widely spaced medium-sized ears, and round, slanted eyes.
- Clean ears.
- Straight tail without kinks.
- No unpleasant odor, physical defects, or discharge from the eyes or nose.
It is advisable to adopt Thai kittens at the age of 3-4 months, when they are already able to tolerate separation from their mother and easily adapt to a new environment.
Important! It is quite difficult to determine the final color of a Thai kitten, since it will be fully formed only by the end of the first year of the pet’s life.
In addition, color can change throughout life due to climate change. In cold temperatures the coat darkens and in hot climates it becomes lighter. Such color changes are caused by the genes of Siamese ancestors and are characteristic of all point colors.
The kitten must have the following documents:
- kitten's birth certificate or completed pedigree;
- veterinary passport;
- purchase and sale agreement in two copies.
The approximate price of a Thai cat kitten is from 10 to 30 thousand rubles . Prices that are too low may indicate fraud, poor health of the kitten, and uncleanliness of the breed.
Diseases and health problems
Thai cats have excellent health. Genetic diseases, when properly crossed, are extremely rare. Basically, cats of this breed can suffer from two types of genetic diseases: broken tail and strabismus. These diseases are not very serious, but still unpleasant. Thais crossed with cats of other breeds may suffer from more dangerous musculoskeletal diseases, but non-purebred Thais are usually immediately noticeable.
In order to avoid these problems, buy an animal from a trusted breeder and make sure that the kitten’s parents are absolutely healthy. Thai cats have a good appetite and are always willing to eat an extra portion, so try not to overfeed the animal so as not to put additional stress on the liver. Under no circumstances should you feed your Thai cats salted fish or smoked meats. Such a meal can cause the animal to become very ill or even die because the animal’s liver cannot cope with large amounts of salt.
The most common diseases found in Thai cats are:
- Amylodosis of the liver;
- Gingivitis;
- Cardiopathy;
- Tumor of the mammary glands.
Keep an eye on your cat's eyes; if the tear glands often become clogged and pus appears on them, the animal should be shown to a veterinarian. Don’t forget about vaccinations and take preventive measures against various parasites more often, then your cat will be healthy and happy for many years.
Diseases
Thais, according to statistics, live 15-18 years, but many cases have been recorded where cats lived to be 20 or even 25 years old. They have strong immunity and good heredity, so don’t be afraid of genetic diseases. Exceptions: tail defects and strabismus (the latter can be a temporary problem, a so-called ailment “feature of childhood”, and goes away with growth, or due to severe stress).
But, like any other cat, the Thai is still susceptible to infections, may suffer from worms, and suffers during the spring “rut.” So remember:
- Don't neglect vaccinations. Even if your pet has never been outside in its life and you don’t plan to take it out. Pathogens can enter the apartment along with the usual food, in water, on the soles of shoes or the edges of clothes, or on dirty hands. Therefore, vaccinate your pet on a regular schedule.
- Thai cats mature early: at 5 or even 4 months. But this does not mean at all that you need to urgently look for a “groom” or “bride”. Early pregnancy will not benefit the animal, and it will certainly affect the health of the kittens. Wait up to a year.
- There is also no need to rush into castration and sterilization. In any case, do not rush to put a kitten under the doctor’s knife until it is six months old: both the operation and the healing period are a burden on the body and a certain danger. But waving your hand at the cat, saying, let him yell at himself, is also not a method. Hormonal surges lead to the fact that with age, cats often develop oncology (in particular, mammary glands), and sterilization significantly reduces this risk.
The rest is the same as everyone else. Poor-quality nutrition affects the teeth, gastrointestinal tract, and appearance; excess food causes obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and poor-quality water causes kidney problems.
The lack of a full undercoat makes Thai cats vulnerable in cold weather, so prepare a warm vest or sweater (for walks on cool days). Protect from drafts and dry with a hairdryer after swimming.
Expert opinion
Dusheba Vera Ivanovna
In 2010, she graduated from the Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine named after K.I. Scriabin with honors, specializing in veterinary medicine. I regularly attend veterinary conferences, congresses, and webinars.
When choosing a kitten, make sure that it has a straight, thick tail and fur without white spots, clear eyes, and no runny nose. Thai mother cats are very careful about the hygiene of their children, and if the baby’s tail is clean and dry, then everything is fine with his tummy. Chat with your kitten: if he is active, playful, not afraid of other people's hands and smells, and reaches out with curiosity to new toys and people - everything is fine. Look at the documents: a three-month-old kitten (you can’t adopt him before) must have his first vaccinations.
