A beautiful Beagle puppy chews on a lace Beagle is one of the artificially bred dog breeds. Ready to become a loyal friend to his owner. Representatives of this breed are particularly active, so regular walks and games in the fresh air will only benefit the pet.

History of the breed

The ancestors of these hunting dogs, apparently, ended up in the famous British Isles from truly Ancient states, namely Greece, as well as Rome, thanks to various Celtic tribes.

It was their active crossing with a variety of local breeds that served as the basis for the rapid appearance of beagles in the future.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, the breed began to fade a little, but extinction did not happen, thanks to lovers of hare hunting in its classical sense and various admirers of beagles.

The British did everything to preserve the breed and its revival among the population.

Over time, the Beagle dog breed began to perform at various shows, exhibitions, and at the end of the nineteenth century this breed even had its own official club.

Five years later, the generally accepted breed standard was also further approved. At the same time, there was a parallel process of reviving hunting with the obligatory participation of dogs of this breed.

What are the main characteristics of this breed?

The Beagle's physique is quite strong, but lacks any form of roughness. Height from 33 to 40 centimeters.

The head is powerful and mostly long. There are no wrinkles or folds. There is a bump on the skull that can be seen even with the naked eye.

If you look at a photo of the Beagle breed, you will notice that most dogs have a black nose, but in the modern world you can also see animals with a slightly lighter nose. This happens when the dog's coat is also quite light in color.

Dogs' eyes are good-natured and expressive. Using them you can easily find out what your pet’s mood is at a particular period of time. The iris can be any shade of brown.

From a photo of a beagle you can very easily understand that the dog’s ears are velvety, slightly drooping and even rounded.

The dogs' body is quite compact, the back is straight, and the lower back is flexible. The hind legs are strong, the front legs are completely straight and do not taper towards the bottom.

Look how active Beagle puppies are and you will understand why their tail is so mobile.

The fur of pets is thick, but quite short and at the same time evenly covers the entire body of the animal.

How to extend a dog's life

The lifespan of a Beagle dog can be increased to approximately 17 years by providing him with proper care. Various factors can have a positive effect on the animal, including adequate loads and training with the help of specialists.

Beagles are pets, so you should pay attention to keeping them in apartments. You can keep a dog in a private house, but not in an outdoor enclosure. The dog does not have a thick undercoat, so it is not suitable for sledding. This is a hunting dog with excellent immunity, but in order to extend its lifespan, it will need to be provided with:

  • regular walking;
  • adequate physical activity;
  • balanced diet;
  • compliance with all hygiene procedures;
  • timely vaccination and treatment against parasites;
  • medical assistance.

The quality of life of an animal will depend 100% on its owner, on how he cares for his pet. Care and proper nutrition build stress resistance and the level of resistance of the animal’s body to various ailments.

Diet

The Beagle is an unpretentious animal; it eats everything that is put in its bowl. The owner must offer the dog only high-quality and nutritious food, and the easiest way would be to purchase ready-made food. Eating dry food will not only make it easier to control your pet’s diet, but will also prevent the formation of tartar. The amount of food for one day is calculated taking into account the age and body weight of the dog.

The lifespan of beagles can be significantly extended even if you feed them natural foods. This is a hunting dog, its diet is compiled on the basis of a number of requirements: 70% of the menu consists of raw lean meat and offal, 20% will be boiled cereals, and the remaining 10% consists of a variety of fruits and vegetables.

A pet’s diet must include not too fatty sea fish fillet, eggs, and fermented milk products. In order for a beagle to live long, the following are excluded from its menu:

  • tubular bones;
  • confectionery;
  • smoked and salted dishes;
  • beans;
  • beans.

Beagles do not know when to stop, so their portion size must be controlled. It is important to remember that a dog that is not limited in its diet develops obesity and a reduced life cycle.

Activity

Beagles are hardy and active dogs by nature that will easily agree to a long walk or jog. It is strictly not recommended to let your pet off the leash within a populated area, as they are hounds that are ready to get carried away in pursuit of game at any moment. If the animal is without a leash, it may die under the wheels of cars. To make the dog feel safe, he is taught to wean himself from picking up food from the ground.

The dog should be walked approximately 2 times a day, with moderate physical activity. The duration of morning walks does not exceed 60 minutes. This animal is cute, it is safe for people around it, so you can walk in special areas without a muzzle and on a long leash. In order for a pet to realize its hunting instinct, it will have to perform tasks to find a stick, ball or other objects. Beagles should be allowed to play with their owner, family members, or other dogs.

Care and hygiene

A special feature of the breed is the presence of short hair that can clean itself. Dogs need to be bathed 1-2 times a month; when bathing, it is worth using dog shampoos twice a year. If the beagle gets dirty during a walk, wipe the contaminated area with a damp rag. You also need to comb the coat using rubber gloves or a brush at least 2 times a week, and when shedding occurs, double this number.

The pet's claws are shortened using pliers. After walks, the animal’s paws are carefully examined and washed, and cuts are treated with antiseptics. The dogs' eyes must be wiped clean from the secretions that accumulate in the corners. To care for them, tampons soaked in boiled water or a decoction of medicinal herbs are used.

The heavy drooping ears of hunting dogs prevent free ventilation and the penetration of air currents. The vulnerability of this part of the body is due to the fact that due to poor care, the animal develops an infection, leading to meningitis or otitis media. If there is any suspicion of infection, the beagle should be shown to a veterinarian. Ears should be cleaned of dirt or dust at least once a week using cotton swabs soaked in lotion.

Vaccination of the animal is carried out strictly according to the schedule drawn up by the veterinarian. Before the first injection, treatment against parasites should be carried out. To ensure proper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, the beagle needs to be periodically given anthelmintic drugs:

  • adults – 2 times a year;
  • for puppies - once a quarter.

Be sure to treat the dog according to the same scheme against fleas or ticks with insecticides.

Health

An appetite that cannot be controlled has become a real problem for beagles, passed down through the family. Overeating causes problems in the form of sudden weight gain. In addition, canine ailments include:

  • otitis caused by insufficient ear care;
  • eye pathologies;
  • tartar, which appears due to the small amount of solid foods on the menu;
  • articular dysplasia caused by high body weight and poor physical activity;
  • heart diseases associated with malfunctioning valves, ischemia, and cardiac blood flow disorders;
  • oncological neoplasms;
  • pathologies of the musculoskeletal system;
  • diseases of the endocrine glands;
  • pancreatic diseases;
  • problems with the adrenal cortex.

In addition to the diseases typical of beagles, frequent births can significantly shorten the life of a bitch. Some breeders are trying to make as much money as possible by selling puppies, so they fail to pay attention to the health of their pets, treating them like an incubator.

Beagles are animals endowed with excellent immunity by nature; they almost never get sick. But the question of how many years beagles live can only be answered by knowing how they are kept. If there are no regular visits to the veterinarian, vaccination, or timely treatment of diseases, then the animal may die before it turns 12 years old. If you constantly take care of your pets, you can significantly extend their life cycle.

Beagle character

The main qualities of dogs of this breed are considered to be activity and cheerfulness. They feel great in the company of children, which indicates that beagles have a good character, and they always support absolutely any children's games.

Maintenance and care

The Beagle, like a hound dog, is prone to shedding year-round, and it occurs especially actively in the spring. To keep the fur in good condition, it is necessary to comb it thoroughly weekly, otherwise it will spread throughout the house. These dogs are clean and do not need to be bathed often. However, in bad weather, beagles often get dirty. Thus, animals of this breed are bathed as needed. Beagles are prone to various ear infections. They most often occur due to improper air circulation in the ear, accumulation of water and wax. The ears and ear canal must be treated weekly with a special solution prescribed by a veterinarian.
