Selection rules
Dog owners can call their pets any name they like. But we must remember that in cynology there are rules for choosing official nicknames for purebred animals.
The name written in the puppy's birth certificate and its home name can be completely different.
If short, sonorous and easy-to-pronounce names are convenient in everyday life, then the official nickname can be complex. It may consist of several names and include a prefix with the name of the nursery where the puppy was purchased. Owners rarely have to come up with their own pedigree for poodles. But it will still be useful to know the basic requirements for official dog names:
- All puppies from the same litter receive nicknames starting with the same letter. For example: Harold, Duke, Genoa, Gloria.
- The letter by which the puppies will be named is determined by the serial number of this litter in the nursery. Puppies from the first litter will receive nicknames starting with “A”, those from the second – with “B” and so on.
- The entire nickname, including the suffix or prefix, as well as spaces between words, must consist of no more than 40 letters.
- It is unacceptable to repeat the same name in a kennel earlier than 30 years after it was given to the dog.
A pet nickname, unlike an official name, should not be long or complex. After all, you will have to use it every day when communicating with your pet. For a dog, its name is a signal to attract attention. That's why the pet name should be:
- Short and consist of 1-3 syllables.
- Easy to pronounce for all family members without exception.
- If possible, contain the letter "P".
- Do not cause negative associations.
- Not being in tune with basic commands.
- Everyone in the family likes it, including the dog itself.
The owner can choose a pet name for his pet based on his hobbies and interests. For example, name a poodle after your favorite character from a book, movie, game, or after a musical instrument. Poodles of any size are also suitable for ordinary foreign names, such as Jim, Charlie, Molly, Daisy.

Names for doggies
Often, the aristocratic and elegant appearance of the poodle is combined with a perky and cheerful character. In this case, choosing a nickname for your pet is very difficult. The solution would be to focus on the individual characteristics of the animal when choosing a nickname for a poodle boy.
According to external characteristics
Poodles are classified by size: large (up to 60 cm), small (up to 45 cm) and dwarf (up to 35 cm). They all have long wavy fur, large floppy ears and a long nose.
There are different colors of this breed: white, black, brown, silver, apricot. In addition, poodles get unusual model haircuts. All these external characteristics can tell you which nickname is suitable for the poodle.
Depending on the color of the coat, the boy can be given the following nickname: Iron, Orange, Black, White, Gold, Gray, Dark, Smoke, Pearl, Chestnut, Leon, Peach, Silver, Snowball, Dusk, Coal.
In accordance with the external characteristics of the boy, he can be called: Zubastic, Zyuzik, Knopik, Handsome, Tiny, Baby, Masik, Plush, Pooh.
Names that reflect character
It is not only the breed that determines the character of a dog. Each living creature has its own individual characteristics.
They can be reflected in the name of a boy: Excitement, Azor, Ataman, Bandit, Brawler, Lucky, Zipper, Hero, Buddy, Zhivchik, Eraser, Macho, Lucky, Tikhon, Turbo, Clever, Success, Fox, Tail, Tsar, Shustrik.
You can't call it that
Here's what you shouldn't call a puppy:
- Names that are not suitable for purebred dogs. Of course, you can name your pet Ball or Bug. But in the eyes of others it will look strange. Poodles are elegant dogs with an aristocratic appearance and common names do not suit them.
- Human names. You cannot call a dog by a human name, as their owners may not like it. It should be clarified that this ban applies only to names that are popular in the area where the dog’s owner lives, and not to foreign ones.
- You should not call your poodle by an offensive or derogatory name. You may think that the name Rogue or Bandit is suitable for a mischievous and active puppy. However, they can cause unpleasant associations for others.
- Words from the religious lexicon are the most inappropriate option for a dog's name. They insult the ears of believers and characterize the dog owner as a person who is not accustomed to taking into account those around him and their opinions.

The nature
Previously, in Napoleonic times, poodles were taken on campaigns and carried in backpacks on the battlefields. Poodles attracted doctors with their barking if the owner was wounded, they also looked for mines, conveyed military mail and looked for the wounded.
If your pet is also one of the militant dogs, you can choose one of these nicknames for him, emphasizing his brave character: Archie, Attila, Guy, Grant, Napoleon, Trajan, Caesar.
