How to sew winter clothes for a dachshund

Raincoat

One of them is this autumn raincoat blanket for a dog. It will be more closed than the blanket that I sewed before, and will better cover the entire body of the barbosie.

I spent a long time looking for a style that I liked. And I accidentally “stumbled upon” dog clothing manufacturers who have a lot of different cool things for our tailed friends. I liked exactly this model of blanket.

And I decided to repeat it.

And here is the second blanket for the pet. This is a warmer winter blanket for a dog.

I also saw this model on the Internet.

And I decided to sew the same cool insulated winter blanket for my Jack.

Necessity of clothing for Dachshunds

Summing up the results of this article, we can conclude that since dachshunds are characterized by the presence of a rather short coat, which is currently completely unable to protect the pet from the cold, clothing for them is no longer an ordinary luxury, but a necessary attribute of everyday life. Not only overalls, vests and jackets are very popular, but also various shoes for Dachshunds, designed to protect their paws.

Of course, today absolutely any element of a dog’s wardrobe can be purchased in a specialized store, sometimes even the most unthinkable. However, most dog owners try to make clothes with their own hands. Moreover, this process is not complicated; sometimes you can simply use an old thing and modify it a little. Dog blanket pattern

I made the patterns for both blankets myself. I built it in my favorite way: on a grid. This is the simplest and most convenient way to create a clothing pattern for dogs.

The main size you need to measure to create the “mesh” is the length of your dog’s back from the neck (where the collar goes on) to the base of the tail. And then, based on this parameter, the side of the “grid” square is calculated. Divide the measured back length by 10 to obtain the side size of the square.

For example, your dog has a back length of 42cm. 42:10=4.2cm. Well, then we simply draw a “grid” of squares on a large blank sheet of paper, the side of each of which will be equal to 4.2 cm. After you have drawn the “grid”, simply transfer the pattern onto it.

In this video I tell you in great detail how to do this.

I hope after watching the video you understood the principle of constructing a grid and how to transfer a pattern to it.

And here is the pattern of our autumn blanket.

As a result, we should get such a comfortable autumn raincoat.

As I described earlier, the main size for creating a pattern is the length of your pet's back. But in order for the pattern to be most accurate, I advise you to take 3 more additional measurements:

  • Neck circumference (it is needed in order not to make the distance along the chest too short, where the red arrow is indicated on the pattern).
  • The distance between the paws (this will determine how correct you make the width of the “shelf”).
  • Length of the belly (shelf). Well, with this size everything is clear. For boys it will be shorter, for girls a little longer.

In this photo I have outlined all these additional dimensions.

To sew this blanket we need only two measurements:

  • The length of your pet's back.
  • Chest circumference.

If everything is clear with the length of the back, it is the main size for creating a pattern. Then, thanks to the accurate measurement of the chest circumference, you can adjust the length of the lower (smooth line) of the back part on the pattern: make it smaller or lengthen it slightly.

Below (on the belly), the smooth protruding parts of the back part should “meet” with each other (as shown in the photo below).

After you have measured the length of the back, drawn a grid of “your” size, transferred the pattern to it, simply “adjust” the pattern taking into account all the additional measurements.

Selection of clothes for Dachshunds

As you know, each type of dog is characterized by the presence of its own structural features of the body. In addition, there are long-haired and short-haired varieties of animals. For this reason, these points should also be taken into account when sewing clothes. Distinguished by its rather long body, clothing for Dachshund dogs is also characterized by specific features. Everything that is embroidered for this pet has a significant length in the back, which must be taken into account when cutting.

In addition, Dachshunds have rather short limbs, for this reason autumn-spring outfits should be well waterproof. The creation of absolutely any element of the wardrobe should begin with making a pattern. In other words, before you start sewing directly, you should take measurements from the animal.

To design a pattern, you will need to take measurements of the back, the length from the bottom from the front to the hind legs, the chest circumference, the height of the dog at the withers, the width of the chest, and the neck circumference. If all measurements are taken correctly, then it will be possible to make any wardrobe item. And detailed knitting for Dachshunds with knitting needles with a description can be found on thematic resources on the Internet.

Knitted patterns

Making such things will appeal to real knitting lovers. After all, there is nothing complicated in this matter, you just need to correctly take measurements from the animal. Knitted hats, blouses and coats are all hand-made clothing for Dachshunds.

Patterns, as well as knitting specific pieces of clothing according to them, will greatly facilitate the whole process and will allow you to make something that fits perfectly on your pet and protects it from frost and wind.

It should be remembered that in order to correctly knit any item, you must very accurately take all the necessary measurements from your pet.

DIY knitting clothes for Dachshunds

Today, thanks to the availability of a large number of resources on the Internet, you can find detailed instructions with photographs and video materials for making a wide variety of clothing items for Dachshunds with a description of the sequence of each stage of work. After all, the majority of dog lovers always try to make clothes for their pets with their own hands.

After all, every needlewoman will be very happy to dress her pet in clothes that she sewed or knitted herself. Be it a hat for a Dachshund or any other wardrobe item. The text below will describe in detail the process of independently sewing some components of clothes for a dachshund, which is intended to somewhat simplify such work for beginning seamstresses.

Knitting a walking suit

For walks in cool weather, you can use both overalls and a sweater for the Dachshund, complete with pants. If you want to make these clothes yourself, you should remember that this will require several different patterns. After all, girls and boys go to the toilet differently. The simplest option is a long sweater for the animal, which protects from cold and wind. It is knitted as standard, starting from the neckline.

To decorate an outfit, you can use various knitting methods, as well as use threads of different colors. If the housewife has a higher level of skill, you can try your hand at knitting overalls or warm pants using buttons, Velcro or ties. It must be remembered that winter clothing for a Dachshund should not only be warm, but also not restrict the pet’s movement or create discomfort.

Knitting a sweater for a dachshund

When knitting a sweater for a dachshund - a pattern for which can be found on thematic resources on the Internet - the work should always start from the neckline. To do this, 50 loops are cast on with knitting needles and knitted using the “spider web” method 1 by 1. The knitting procedure itself here is carried out from the neck to the tail, thus the product is knitted from top to bottom.

After this, they begin to install the chest part, which should be knitted using facial loops, by adding 1 or 2 loops in several rows until the length reaches 5 cm in size. Then you need to make holes for the pet’s limbs, which are easier to make if you have a pattern. The knitting of this part is divided into 3 parts, to which an additional 5 cm of length is knitted. The pattern for a blanket for a Dachshund, required for knitting, looks almost the same.

You should remember to periodically try on a knitted product on a dog to take into account all its anatomical features. If all the elements converge, then the 3 parts are connected to knit an additional 7 cm, while at the same time reducing them in the loops to the original volume of 54.

At the final stages, the sweater for the Dachshund is knitted as follows:

  1. After completing the main work, you need to make the sleeves. Here the pattern is no longer required. To do this, knit a pair of medium rectangles separately with 20 stitches.
  2. It is necessary to take into account that the width of the sleeves should be 2 times larger than the hole left for the limbs, and the length should correspond to the size and volume of the dog’s front legs. They are then stitched together into a cylindrical shape and secured to the holes on the sweater itself.
  3. The final touch will be fastening the entire product with buttons, buttons or a standard zipper.

However, when doing the work, you should remember that the pattern for a girl’s Dachshund will be somewhat different from that for a male.

Accessories for Dachshunds

Today there are a huge number of different companies that are able to give a banal attribute, for example, a dog leash, collar, harness or muzzle, stylish, comfortable or completely extravagant “tricks”. Many professional dog handlers express the opinion that a herring collar for a Dachshund is not entirely suitable and can cause any problems with the pet’s posture.

It should be noted that in general the term “herring” itself relates not only to collars, it is also a special knitting technique. Moreover, some craftsmen can knit a really cool thing using this method. However, it is best to focus only on the individual needs of the dog, and not listen to the opinions of other people. Many breeders know how and perfectly make a variety of accessories for their own pets.

Even a simple collar or muzzle for a Dachshund can be made using a pattern and a piece of thick fabric. Moreover, this will take no more than one day. And if you also decorate the resulting item with pebbles, you can get an excellent harness for a walk. Most often, a muzzle is required to protect the animal itself rather than the people around it. For this reason, the owner of a Dachshund should accustom his pet to such an accessory from a very early age.

Otherwise, you will have to spend a lot of time each time persuading the dog to put it on, as well as attempts by the dachshund itself to remove this hated thing from its face. Some negligent owners do not close their pet’s mouth, thereby provoking it to pick up some dubious treat from the ground, which can even lead to death for the dog. After all, everyone knows that these pets are very curious and restless.

Necessary materials

The choice of materials, of course, depends on the purpose of the blanket. If this is a summer raincoat, you can take membrane fabric and use regular lining fabric as a lining.

If you are sewing a winter blanket, you can use faux fur or fleece as a lining.

For a demi-season blanket for a dog, designed for a cool, slushy autumn or spring, I will need:

  • Membrane or waterproof raincoat fabric.
  • Backing stitch.
  • Fastex plastic fastener.
  • Adjustment plastic buckle
  • 0.5 meters of belt sling.
  • Regular elastic band (0.5 meters).
  • Velcro (if necessary).

For an insulated winter blanket I took:

  • Membrane or waterproof raincoat fabric (I used lining stitch on thin padding polyester).
  • Fleece fabric for lining and hood.
  • A rubber band approximately 3mm thick.
  • Two latches.
  • Velcro.

I will not describe step by step the entire process of making blankets. You can watch both master classes in video clips on our YouTube channel.

Knitted option

If the owner of a dachshund is easier to handle with knitting needles or a crochet hook than with a sewing machine, then it will be very easy for her to knit warm knitted clothes for her pet.

The simplest option is to make a cape in the form of a triangle or rectangle. The long side should be equal to the DS measurement (back length), the short side - OG (chest girth).

The cape can be knitted in different patterns - for insulation it is better to use vertical “braids”; a lighter version can be made with openwork.

To secure the cape, beautiful buttons, Velcro, and ties are used.

A beautiful and original sweater for a dachshund can be knitted using a special pattern.

It should be taken into account that the length of the abdomen in females is usually several centimeters longer than in males.

Here you need to take a piece of paper with the measurements taken and draw a drawing of the future warm sweater on graph paper:

  • number 1 – 1/3 of the neck circumference measurement;
  • 2 on the back - 2/3 of the neck circumference;
  • 3 - chest length from collar to front paw;
  • 4 - chest width between paws;
  • 5 - back width;
  • 6 — belly length (for males it is 4–5 cm shorter);
  • 7 - back length;
  • 8 — fixed size 6 cm (armhole height);
  • 9 – 3 cm.

Knitting a sweater always starts with an elastic band on the back. For a better fit, it is made 4–5 cm wide. After this, you can give free rein to your imagination and make the product with any pattern. When all the parts of the future sweater are knitted, they are sewn together. At the neckline, the loops are cast on round knitting needles and a collar 7–10 cm high is knitted. It is better to crochet the armholes.
