History of the breed
It is surprising how often you can find articles in which this old English breed is confused with the relative new Russian Toy. Of course, this situation can be understood, since Russian toi actually originated from English ones. However, the breeds have several significant differences that affected their position in the FCI classification. Thus, the English Toy Terrier, as a dog of known origin, is classified in the third group of terriers, while the Russian Toy, originally bred from small decorative dogs, after its registration fell into the 9th group - decorative dogs.
The English Toy Terrier is a small variety of the Manchester Terrier, a black and tan hunting dog whose main purpose was to hunt badgers and other game. The breed regularly produced smaller puppies, which the ladies of the court willingly purchased as pets. That is why the Toy’s character cannot be called decorative - he is a self-confident little dog, always ready for adventure and able to stand up for himself. The breed was obtained in Moscow. At the beginning of the 20th century, one of the most popular decorative dogs in Russia were English toy terriers, but in the 20–50s their breeding was almost not carried out due to the October Revolution, since these dogs were tied to the aristocracy and were not approved, so the livestock decreased to a critical level. Since the mid-50s of the 20th century, Russian cynologists began to create a breed of decorative dogs similar to the Toy Terrier.
In the mid-50s of the last century, the import of ornamental species into the USSR was minimal and untargeted. The existing livestock, bred on sometimes vicious dogs, was radically different from their counterparts abroad. Domestic smooth-haired toy terriers were a happy exception. Soviet cynologists consolidated the successful mixture of small-sized dogs with a description of the totality of characteristics of the breed group. As a result of selection work, smooth-haired dogs were obtained with a phenotype different from the English Toy Terrier in many fundamental respects. In 1958, the first long-haired toy terrier was obtained from crossing two smooth-haired parents.
In 1996, the National Club of the Russian Toy Terrier breed was created in Moscow. The following year, the club organized the first All-Russian Toy Terrier Exhibition.
On February 21, 2006, at a meeting of the FCI Breeding Commission, a decision was made to recognize the breed, and its standard was assigned number 352. At the request of the FCI, the previous names of the breeds - Moscow Longhaired Toy Terrier and Russian Smooth-haired Toy Terrier were replaced by a single name - Russian Toy, including both varieties .
Since 2006, the Russian Toy has the status of a conditionally (temporarily) recognized breed. This means that the breed cannot qualify for the CACIB title until it is finally recognized, which will not happen until 2021. Russian Toys, however, are entitled to other FCI titles (European Champion, World Champion, etc.) Despite its small build, the Russian Toy Terrier behaves very bravely, with dignity in any dog group, and skillfully protects itself and its owner.
Description
Each breed has its own unique external features that make it easy to recognize. The toy terrier belongs to the decorative dogs, lives exclusively in comfortable conditions, and sometimes even without going outside. The weight of an adult dog is as much as 2-3 kg, but there are even larger individuals. It all depends on lifestyle and nutrition, for a sedentary home life will certainly cause obesity even in such a fit breed. Freedom of movement around the living space, walking in the fresh air (in all seasons) and high-quality balanced nutrition will always keep the dog in good shape.
The breed has an impressive height of 20-25 cm, although there are exceptions here. Often representatives of this breed differ from the standards, but there is nothing terrible about that. But the colors confuse many, because dark tones are quite popular, but the colors can be different. Here you can meet in one room 10 dogs of the same breed, with a wide variety of colors. Most of the varieties of this breed are smooth-haired, but you can often find carriers of long hair.
Shedding, in turn, depends on the length of the hair, but you still need to comb it from time to time so that it does not accumulate, and then there is no need to clean all the things in the house from hair.
Character of the Russian Toy Terrier
Due to their character traits, dogs of this breed are suitable even for inexperienced dog breeders. They are hardy, agile and loyal, active and lively. Thanks to their sociability, they are excellent companions not only for the owner, but also for all family members. He plays happily with children and becomes a gentle and loving companion for older people. The dog is always ready to accompany the owner and should be taken with you everywhere - in your arms or in a basket. Toy terriers are easy to transport in any type of transport and are allowed into hotels.
Also, the Russian Toy Terrier is easily friends with other dogs and pets. Toy terriers respond well to training, becoming obedient.
In general, this is a balanced, calm and fairly easy to train dog. But with small dogs it is very important to understand that this is not a toy (although “toy” is translated from English as “toy”) and not like a cat, but a dog with its own needs, characteristics and instincts. If this fact is ignored, then that terrier may develop the so-called small dog syndrome or Napoleon syndrome - she will consider herself the main one in the house, with all the ensuing consequences: uncontrollable barking and aggression, the demand to serve her and satisfy all her whims.
To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to follow a number of rules for handling such a dog. For example, do not allow the dog to jump on people, growl and bark at its own discretion, do not allow them to constantly climb onto the lap, violating the owner’s personal space, and in no case allow them to sleep on their own pillow.
Pros and cons of toy terriers
Today, the pros and cons of the Toy Terrier, which are obvious, have very closely entered the fashion of the elite. Although it initially came to the territory of modern Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is also worth noting that from that time he immediately won everyone’s attention and love and became the type of dog that the most famous dog breeders began to choose. Most of these dogs live like toy babies, the colors of which can be very diverse, near their owner, constantly accompanying him everywhere.
As for professional breeders, they also paid special attention to this breed and once the original Russian variety of Toychiks was bred; today this variety is called the Russian Toy Terrier, which can be either short-haired or long-haired.
That terrier breed standard was recognized in Russia only at the end of the last century, and the world organization of dog breeders has not yet fully recognized it. This is due to the fact that, although these dogs have almost ideal characteristics, and their characteristics can give odds to many recognized breeds, still a lot of work needs to be done to improve these babies.
Maintenance and care
Easy to care for, Russian Toy Terriers can be excellent companions for adults and busy people due to their compact size and ease of care. In families where small children live, Russian Toy Terriers can grow up to be overly excitable, and also be traumatized by a child, not out of a sense of evil, but for the sake of curiosity.
These obstinate little ones can only live in a well-lit room, without drafts. Toy terriers, like large dogs, love walks, but in case of bad weather or while the animal is not yet accustomed to the house, constant exits outside the walls of the house, you can equip a specially designated place (a dog tray in which you can lay an absorbent diaper or artificial grass ). At first, when the animal has just appeared in the house, you should remove the carpets, laying out diapers, which should gradually (when the dog understands why the owner laid them out) move to the place that will be the dog’s toilet.
Care for the coat of a smooth-haired terrier is minimal - bathing when dirty, timely prevention of blood-sucking. Long-haired toy terriers require more careful care - combing out dead hairs with special brushes.
It is advisable to purchase toys for a friend at home. Squeaker toys are quite good and interesting for dogs - rubber bones, balls (smooth, without spikes, medium size, so that the dog cannot swallow the product or a piece bitten off from it while playing). It is not advisable to give products intended for cats as toys. Even the miniature size of Toy Terriers still does not make his teeth weak. And the small size of the stomach may lead to the need for surgery. Soft plush toys are fraught with malocclusion. If you really want to please an animal with a soft friend, you should choose a fabric (or with a small pile) toy, after making sure that the nose, eyes and other parts are sewn or glued firmly.
Features of feeding toy terriers
Feeding a toy terrier is not a particular problem, since this animal is quite small and does not require a large amount of food. However, it is worth noting that the toy terrier’s diet must be as balanced as possible so that the pet does not have any problems with the gastrointestinal tract.
What to feed a toy terrier puppy, this issue should be discussed with a veterinarian, since the main menu should not be very varied, since what you can feed a toy terrier can consist of mono-products, the main rule is the correct balance and small portions of food . The life expectancy of a terrier and its physical health characteristics most directly depend on this basic rule.
Thus, you cannot feed your dog food from the table, as this can cause even a small amount of the wrong food to cause the animal very serious problems with the gastrointestinal tract.
Nutrition
For feeding, you can choose either ready-made dry or canned food, or prepare your dog’s food yourself. When a dog owner decides to buy industrial products for a pet, preference should be given to those types that are designed for miniature breed dogs.
Natural food for a toy terrier should consist of 2/3 meat (including offal). The diet should include dairy products and eggs. Porridge (mixed with meat) should alternate with boiled vegetables (also with meat). When feeding home-prepared food, you should think about fortifying the animal in the autumn and spring.
Adult dogs should receive food at least 2 times a day, and puppies up to 3-4 months old at least 4-5 times. The cleanliness of bowls is very important; if they are dirty, they can disrupt the dog’s gastrointestinal tract. It is advisable to change the water daily and wash the bowl after feeding.
Which food is better to give preference to?
Toy terrier nutrition is a question that does not have a clear answer. You can prepare the food yourself or give preference to dry foods designed specifically for this breed of dog.
If you want your dog to live longer, then you should give your preference to premium food. Usually dogs eat them with great pleasure, and they contain a maximum of vitamins and microelements, which are largely necessary for those dogs that have any stomach problems.
If you wish, you can soak the dry food a little, but you should definitely remember that the process of chewing dry granules is simply necessary so that the dog can properly clean its teeth and have a healthy grin.
What to feed the toy terrier and how many times is a nuance that should be considered exclusively by the dog’s owner; however, in no case should natural food be mixed with dry varieties of food. The more balanced the diet, the brighter and more saturated the color of the animal will be, and the coat will shine with beautiful tints. It is also worth noting that how long toy terriers live depends most directly on their diet and the quality of the animal’s food.
If you prefer natural food, then sometimes you can replace it with canned food or stew, however, this should only be done if the owner does not have enough time to prepare the usual food for his pet. How to care for a toy terrier and feed it correctly is a very complex question and requires an integrated approach from the owner.
Training and education
Depending on the place of residence of the dog owner and financial resources, you can consider the option of contacting a dog training club, where, under the supervision of an experienced specialist, the animal owner will teach the pet good manners and obedience. The simplest commands (“No!”, “Ugh!”, “Come to me!”) can be learned between the owner and the dog before the age of 6 months, while after this period, training will be necessary. A dog that fulfills even a simple command correctly and well should be rewarded (praised, perhaps, and given a treat).
You should not shout or hit the animal - toy terriers will not love such an owner. In some cases, when the dog does not obey, it is wise to raise your voice a little (without screaming) or ignore the ingratiating behavior of the offending animal for a while.
How I got a “toy terrier”
It's all my dad's fault. I always thought that I got the “dog person” diagnosis from him. I admit that my love for dogs intensified after being bitten by a neighbor’s dog (possibly transmitted through saliva). One way or another, I was always sure that as soon as I started living on my own, I would certainly have my own dog. Perhaps even a husband, but certainly a dog. The husband appeared first. I immediately said that I needed another animal. He timidly mentioned the cat. I snorted in disapproval. Chewed furniture, damaged carpet, corpses of dead slippers, dirty paws after a walk in any weather - give up all this for the sake of a cat?? Unthinkable. We agreed that the one who first brings the animal into the house will be right. If my husband gets ahead of me, well, let it be a cat or cat.
It’s clear that I was the first. I've always liked big dogs better. Shaggy, cheerful, clumsy. I can see how an overweight Newfoundland runs with me across the snow-covered lawn in front of our cozy country house, and then we lie on the carpet in front of the fireplace in the living room. But the dream of a snow-covered lawn with a house, a fireplace and a huge dog did not want to fit into the framework of our one-room apartment. I had to give up the fireplace and cut the dog down to room size.
The breed did not matter, the main thing was that the grown dog, standing on its hind legs, would not be taller than me. Fortunately, I am a little over one and a half meters tall. Having scoured the advertisements on Avito, I came across a heartbreaking story about abandoned puppies, mixed-breed toy terriers and an unknown mongrel father. A photo of puppies with sad eyes is attached. So, I persuaded the car with my friends to rush to Pskov and back for the puppy.
In Pskov they handed me a rickety skeleton and hastily disappeared. At first I thought that I would be lucky if the puppy did not die on the way to St. Petersburg. Then she looked thoughtfully at the large paws and doubted that the toy terrier was present in the “pedigree.” But the job was done, and we got home.
The puppy received the name Eva from her husband, and on the very first night, Eva knocked over the trash can in search of treats. How we managed to get it out is still a mystery. But the rickety little creature eventually turned into a spoiled bed madam.
The “toy terrier mix” was not only recovering, but also growing steadily, exceeding all imaginable toy terrier dimensions. For ourselves, we decided that we just have a healthy, strong Pskov toy. Not like all the little ones there.
I don’t know what the previous “owners” did with the puppies, but our Eva was afraid of everything - voices, steps, awkward hand movements, laughter, the street. Oh, yes... at first we walked at night, in the evenings, at dawn - when there were few cars, people and dogs. And they talked almost in a whisper. At first it’s two or three months. Then Eva decided that, in principle, we were not bad people and were not going to kill her right away. Therefore, you can chew on the chair. And wires. And slippers. And fresh wires. And new slippers.
Thanks to my husband (“Evochka can’t sleep on the floor! It’s blowing on her. Let’s put her on the bed. How can we not cover it with a blanket?? It’s necessary!”), our dog allows us to share a bed with her. Sometimes you even manage to win a piece of the blanket for yourself.
And, after all, it only weighs about fifteen kilograms! Just five toy terriers. But what ears...
How to choose a puppy
It is better to buy a toy terrier puppy from a nursery or from a breeder than from a pet store or poultry market. First of all, you must make sure that the animal has a brand and a passport with a mark of examination by a veterinarian. In this case, you can be sure that he is already 45 days old. If the puppy is more than two months old, then the passport must also contain a vaccination note.
Toy terrier puppies grow quickly, usually by 4-6 months their growth has completely stopped. Therefore, at two or three months the puppy can already be called a teenager. But don’t be afraid to take such an animal: each age has its own advantages and disadvantages. Small puppies, ranging in age from approximately 45 to 80 days, captivate with their appearance - they are adorable, plump little ones. Their advantage is also that the animal gets used to its owner from an early age, and therefore you can train it to suit you with greater ease.
But there are also disadvantages: first of all, this is the need for a large number of additional costs for vaccinations, changing teeth, and so on. In addition, the animal is not yet accustomed to independence; small puppies may cry when left alone. A teenage puppy is an ideal option for those who want to get another puppy, but do not want to bother with him for a long time. Such puppies are usually litter box or diaper trained, can walk on a leash, and have basic communication skills with people or other animals. In addition, you will not need to spend money on vaccinations.
Teenage puppies have two main disadvantages. Firstly, this is the age when charming toys look like ugly ducklings: they have elongated legs, disproportionate heads and bodies. And secondly, if a puppy has the makings of a future champion, it can cost significantly more than at the age of up to 80 days. Should I adopt an adult dog? Usually this is a calm dog, fully trained in commands, capable of entertaining itself, possessing communication skills and trained to use a tray. The big advantage is that you don’t have to train it. But there are also a number of disadvantages. Firstly, it is more difficult for an animal to get used to a person. Secondly, if there are problems in his upbringing, then correcting them can be very difficult.
A healthy toy terrier should be slightly restless and active, inquisitive and inquisitive, he should respond to you when he meets you. Also look at the eyes, nose and ears - they should be clean.
Characteristics of Toy Terriers
Toy Terrier breed description His character is flexible and quite kind. This opinion is mainly based on reviews from breeders who breed these dogs. However, the upbringing of a toy terrier has a very big influence, since some of these individuals can simply pounce on people's fingers and chew them to the point of wounds. Thus, the education of the toy terrier plays a fundamental role and should begin from the very birth of terriers.
In most cases, raising a toy terrier is a process that all family members must engage in, however, in some cases, a pet can choose one single owner, however, this is more the exception than the rule. This is due to the fact that these mini dogs love company very much and loneliness is not the best thing that can happen when keeping such babies as a toy terrier puppy.
If a dog is left alone with itself for a long enough time, then it immediately begins to get bored and look for something to spoil. The toy terrier and children get along very well, so you can trust your child to entertain your pet. But, if, nevertheless, there is no one to amuse that terrier, since you are constantly working, then it is better to have pets in pairs, only then they will not get bored and think about damaging property or shoes.
As for other options, they can be kittens whose color resembles toychiks, this is due to the fact that toychiks get along well with them and they will not be able to play dirty tricks together, since their interests are slightly different from each other.
In addition, an adult dog, whose color is rich and attractive, has another negative feature - this is the fact that this dog loves to bark very much. Thus, there can be a lot of puppy barking, and if you live in an apartment, your neighbors may come to visit you.
Therefore, there is no definite rule on how to choose a terrier so that he barks less; you just need to try as hard as possible to wean him from this bad habit.
Advantages and disadvantages of the breed
Toy terriers have several undeniable advantages compared to other breeds. They have a calm nature and will not attack anyone who is not trying to harm their owner. Combined with its small size, this gives another plus - the ability to take the toy terrier with you outdoors, for a walk, even to public places.
Unlike large dogs, toy terriers do not cause fear among passers-by. Finally, keeping a Toy Terrier is not expensive simply because he is not able to eat much. There are also disadvantages. Like all small dogs, Toy Terriers are more difficult to train. Due to their size and characteristics of the body, they are vulnerable and cannot tolerate cold and dampness. And although toy terriers really cannot eat much, they are often picky when it comes to food, and they have to choose an individual diet - almost as varied as a person’s.
Pros of the breed
The Mini Toy Terrier dog breed has the following advantages :
- The mini toy terrier has an attractive, touching appearance;
- The miniature size allows you to create comfortable conditions for keeping this breed even in a small room;
- These dogs require fairly small amounts of food;
- With proper upbringing, the pet easily makes contact with children, as well as with various pets;
- It is much easier to travel with a miniature dog than with a large dog. To do this, just use a small carrying bag.
Interesting facts about the breed
- Although it is one of the smallest breeds, it does not have record sizes (these include Spitz, Yorkshire terrier, and Chihuahua).
- Many people confuse the Toy with a Pinscher or Chihuahua. At first glance, these breeds are really similar, but it’s worth putting them side by side to see clear differences in many respects.
- There is an opinion that, in addition to the smooth-haired and long-haired Russian Toy, there is a hairless variety. This is a misconception: the Hairless Toy is a breed developed in the USA.
- Russian Toys rarely give birth to more than three puppies. However, this applies to almost all varieties of toy terriers.
- Toys, unlike larger breeds, are often allowed into the cabin of an airliner if it is in your hands. Hotel owners are also very favorable towards this miniature breed.
- If your toy shakes frequently, this is a feature common to many representatives of the breed and is not a defect or a sign of disease.
Owner reviews
Anna
My toy terrier is already 3 years old and from this article I learned a lot about him. For example, these dogs are truly loyal to their owner and will always protect him. But for some reason my dog considers only me to be his owner. He also gets along with others, but most of all he is attached to me. I also like that he is friends with our cat and other dog, and always plays with the child. And he is also excellent as a caretaker in the apartment. As soon as strangers arrive, he barks, but at the command “friends” he becomes silent and tries to make friends. But when walking, it is better to keep him on a leash because he always tries to approach other dogs.

Dogs of this breed are very active and are not suitable for busy people. In principle, there is no need to bathe them. But I wash it about once every two to three months. Combs, combs, etc. they don’t need them, since they are a smooth-haired breed (there are also toys with hair on their ears, and then you need to scratch them a little).
Very frozen - even in summer they shake from the cold. Therefore, be sure to buy a couple of sweaters, down jackets, blouses, and T-shirts for your little animal. We have a whole wardrobe!
Also real bells! They bark at any sound! categorically not suitable for families with small children. In principle, there is nothing complicated in the content. It is not necessary to train these dogs, just for fun or for exhibitions.
But it was a little difficult with socialization. He rushed towards every dog with a wild bark. It seems like there’s nothing like that now, I’ve already grown up.
Very charming and beautiful dogs! It's a real treat to the eye) Their loyalty is top notch - they will never abandon their owner! Mine is not a step away from me, on all trips with us. But at the same time vindictive. He hated my mother when she scolded him (he stole the chicken from the table)…
I think everyone has a piece in their heart for these dogs. I never thought that toys were such kind, loyal dogs. My Charlie sends you all a fiery kiss.

Looking through the advertisements, we chose a toy terrier. The only difficulty we had was potty training Bucks. So we didn’t succeed. We adopted a 2 month old puppy in October. Veterinarians do not recommend walking puppies of this breed in winter, so we started potty training, but without success. Our dog didn't want to do it right. Only in the spring, when we started walking him, the problem disappeared by itself. Knowing how easy it is for cats to toilet train, keeping a dog for the first six months was simply a nightmare for me. Therefore, I recommend getting a toy terrier in spring or summer. By the time it gets cold, he will have grown up and will be able to walk outside.
Now our toy has grown up, he began to understand a lot, we loved him with all our souls. And he is us!!!
Although he is small, he has all the manners of a big dog:
- He's loyal
- He protects his home and owner
- He loves children very much and does not bite them.
- He is affectionate to the point of madness
- He understands everything

My little amigo is not only a faithful friend, a sensitive comrade, but also a brave warrior! Feeling that I don’t want to see anyone, this little one makes it clear in no uncertain terms that you are not welcome here! Of the advantages of this breed, I will appreciate, first of all, that keeping such a dog is no more expensive than other breeds, it eats little and is practically omnivorous, does not require daily walking, gets along well with cats, lifts the mood with its games, is very sensitive to mood, is not intrusive, but it also has a very LOUD BARK, which on the other hand can be a minus, since at three o’clock in the morning I’m usually not ready for such a sound siren, but you always know who’s behind the door, yours or strangers, and probably the fact that it’s not frost-resistant).
The price is different and depends on the parents, affiliation, pedigree and physical characteristics, if just for the home is enough so that the dog does not grow up to be an elephant and is healthy! I will also note that it is not uncommon to find males with cryptorchidism and therefore it is more advisable to take a male with already released testicles (also remember that you cannot breed a male dog at once and then start marking, the best option is still to castrate, unless of course you have him for breeding). Unfortunately, I was unlucky; one thing didn’t work out for us, but still this faithful friend became part of my family, and part of his pack...

Feeding. Our darling prefers straight food. She doesn’t even look in the direction of dry food or special canned food. He eats boiled beef, rabbit, buckwheat with vegetables, rice with meat. Favorite delicacies - dried lung, liver. Now we eat 4-5 times a day, as a puppy we ate 2-3 times. Weight 1810g.
Care. Caring for a dog will not be difficult if you do everything correctly and do not overdo it. We bathe the dog once every 2-3 weeks with a special shampoo for short-haired dogs. In the autumn-spring and summer, we bathe as it gets dirty. If this has to be done every day, we simply bathe with clean, warm water without shampoo. The most unpleasant procedure is brushing your teeth and cutting your nails (the dog starts biting and whining throughout the house and often breaks out). We trim the claws once a month with a special nail clipper, then go over them with a nail file to round off the sharp ends. We brush our teeth once a week using a special finger brush and toothpaste for dogs.
In the summer we often walked in nature and therefore used products against ticks and parasites. Once every three months we make sure to worm the baby and get all the prescribed vaccinations and tests.
Place and upbringing. We came across a smart girl, she sleeps in her house or on a mat, she knows a lot of commands: “sit”, “voice”, “lie down”, “crawl”, “quiet” “bring the ball”, “give the ball”, “look for a toy” ", "ask".
Problems . Toy terriers have very weak legs, so they should not be allowed to jump from heights; we often jumped off the sofa and then limped. We are not in heat yet and therefore have not yet encountered such a problem, but I have read that dogs during this period often become nervous, whine, can do their business throughout the house and often bite. We are also very cold, we freeze even at home, at a temperature of +20, so we wear special clothes at home and outside.
Well, in conclusion, I would like to note that the dog is not an acquired taste. She is very active, requires increased attention, loves to be caressed, licked, and play.
