Many owners of uncastrated cats and unsterilized cats suffer from sexual heat. There are many veterinary medications that relieve sexual desire in cats. They are available in tablet, drop and injection formats. Note that the use of antisex drugs for cats can have a detrimental effect on general health, so castration or sterilization is a more preferable measure. If the owner of an errant cat decides to use temporary remedies, especially those containing hormones, he needs to consult a veterinarian. Below we will tell you which zoopharmaceutical drugs help calm a “walking” pet.
“Anti-sex” for cats: a review of drugs to curb sexual desire
Chemical composition of the drug
The composition of the drug includes:
- mepregenol acetate;
- ethinyl estradiol.
The essence of the effect is the inhibition of the hypothalamic-physeal region of the brain, which is responsible for controlling the production of gonadotropic hormones in the animal’s body. Thus, antiovulatory and antiestrogenic effects are achieved, which helps eliminate sexual desire. The main active ingredient is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and then processed in the liver and breaks down into free steroids and conjugates.
Did you know? The cat's maximum speed is 50 km/h.
In this form, it is excreted naturally along with urine and feces. At the end of the course of administration, 90% of the substance is excreted with waste products within 15 days.
How to give the drug to a cat?
As for giving injections, it is better to entrust this matter to a veterinarian, given that hormonal injections for heat are given over a long period of time.
It is easier to give drops: the bottle already has a pipette into which the required number of drops is collected. Some drugs can be dripped directly onto the animal’s nose, after which the cat will lick the medicine itself. If the drops need to be applied to the root of the tongue, the pet is fixed, gently pressed on the lower jaw and the drug is quickly poured into the mouth.
To prevent the animal from clenching its jaws, you can place a finger between them
If we talk about tablets, then most likely, two people will need to be involved in the procedure. One will hold the animal, preventing it from escaping, the second will directly monitor that the cat swallows the drug. There is the fastest and most effective way to give a pill to even the most obstinate cat. The tableted drug is dipped in sour cream, kefir or yogurt, then the pet’s mouth is opened, fixed, and then the tablet is pushed deep into the throat - you can use tweezers for this.
As soon as the tablet is inside the oral cavity, you need to squeeze the animal’s jaws and gently, gently stroke the mustachioed pet’s throat, making sure that all the medicine is swallowed and the cat does not spit out the tablet later.
Cats rarely agree to take medications voluntarily
How to determine that a cat is “walking”?
Kittens reach sexual maturity on average at 7–9 months. But these indicators are very conditional, because depending on the breed, living conditions and a number of other factors, the process can begin at 4-5 months or, on the contrary, delay until 11-12. For example, the British Fold cat, the Siamese and all those belonging to the Oriental type mature earlier than long-haired breeds.
Characteristic behavior of a cat in heat. Early maturation is also observed in individuals kept in nurseries, where young animals have been in contact with adult sexually mature representatives since childhood. In this regard, it is necessary to learn to determine the condition of your pet, focusing on behavioral characteristics. In cats, the process of puberty is associated with such signs as marking territory and aggressive behavior.
Did you know? There are 53 loosely fitting vertebrae in a cat's spine. This feature allows the animal to arch its back.
They often pee past the tray or even find a secluded place to defecate. Cats that are in heat often, on the contrary, become loving, follow the heels of their household members and fawn over them. Female animals fall to the floor, roll around, rub against furniture, bending at the waist. Regardless of gender, animals make piercing sounds, thus calling for a sexual partner.
For cats, the period of “walking” can last a very long time. It is typical for cats to enter the estrus phase several times a year for 2-3 weeks. However, there are often cases when females walk throughout the year, that is, almost immediately after giving birth, such an animal begins to walk again.
Composition and action
The drug contains two main components:
- mepregenol acetate, water soluble;
- ethinyl estradiol.
Olive oil, in which the components of the drug are dissolved, ensures dosage accuracy and improves the absorption of the drug. Sex barrier pills are no less effective.
The action of mepregenol acetate and ethinyl estradiol is aimed at influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary system of the animal, the production of gonadotropic hormones by the pituitary gland. Due to this, ovulation of the follicles stops. Ethinyl estradiol increases the viscosity of the uterine mucus, which slows down the movement of sperm and creates obstacles for the implantation of a fertilized egg. Unwanted pregnancy does not occur. In males, testosterone levels decrease.
The drug is made using synthetic hormones - analogues of gestagen and estrogen. Thanks to this, it is possible to adjust the hormonal levels of animals – both females and males – as accurately as possible. Unlike other types of hormonal drugs of similar action, Sex Barrier is gentle and safe: it does not lead to irreversible changes in the reproductive system.
Important! The use of the drug does not exclude the restoration of the reproductive function of the animal’s body 2-3 months after stopping the use of the drug.
Indications and contraindications of the drug
The drug is indicated for:
- suppression of sexual arousal in dogs and cats;
- termination of pregnancy in the early stages;
- eliminating the effect of false puppiness, cattiness;
- prevention of vaginal hyperplasia in dogs.
The use of the product is contraindicated for cats and lactating females.
Also, “Antisex” is not used before the onset of puberty and in the presence of neoplasms in the genitourinary system and mammary glands. The drug is not prescribed to individuals with bladder stones. Important! “Antisex” is contraindicated for the Greyhound breed of dogs, due to their hypersensitivity to the ingredients.
The product may cause the following adverse reactions:
- increase in animal weight;
- a sharp change in behavioral reactions;
- increased appetite;
- swelling of the mammary glands.
Long-term use of hormonal drugs leads to diabetes and adrenal dysfunction. In females, as a result of constant use, neoplasms arise in the genitourinary system, and disruption of the endocrine system is also observed.

Hormonal agents
With the help of hormonal drugs, you can quickly and, most importantly, effectively block sexual heat in cats. However, long-term use of these drugs negatively affects the reproductive function of the pet. Recent studies have shown that the animal's sensitivity to insulin decreases, as a result of which diabetes mellitus develops and irreversible problems with the endocrine system appear.
Important! Therefore, before using antisex drugs for cats for the first time, be sure to examine your pet and consult with a veterinarian.
Hormonal drugs are available in the form of drops and tablets. Many drugs come in both forms. However, drops are much more convenient and easier to give to your pet than anti-walking pills for cats. Therefore, we included medicines in liquid form in our rating. We will learn from the rating below which drops for cats to stop walking are better to choose.
How to give Antisex to cats?
Before using the drug, the instructions for it must be thoroughly studied. The slightest inconsistencies in actions will lead to a complete lack of effect. To reduce manifestations of aggression, cats are injected with Suprastin (sold in a regular pharmacy) as a sedative in combination with Antisex.
It is not recommended to combine it with other drugs. Only a doctor gives such injections. The drug should not be used for more than 18 months in a row. It is necessary to take a break at least once a year, equal in time to the duration of the heat.
Drops
The liquid form of the drug is easiest to use. To delay estrus, apply 3 drops to the root of the tongue every 7 days. If the process has already started, to interrupt it, give 3 drops daily until the symptoms completely disappear. You should start giving the drug no later than 3 days after the start of estrus. When the first signs of heat appear, cats are given 3 drops daily for 3 days, then 1 drop for another 2 weeks. More than 2 intensive courses (daily use) per year are contraindicated.
Pills
The daily dosage is calculated according to body weight and depending on the purpose of use.
Purpose of application | Daily dosage |
at the first signs of sexual arousal for 3–5 days | ˃5 kg - 1 tablet; 5–10 kg - 2 tablets; from 10 kg – 2–4 tablets |
to maintain a calming effect and maintain low sexual activity once every 2 weeks | 1 tablet regardless of body weight |
to prevent unwanted pregnancy, no later than 24 hours after mating, once | 2 tablets regardless of body weight |
Cats begin to be given medicine a week before the start of sexual heat, 1 tablet every day. In the next 2 weeks, 0.5 tablets daily.
Important! The drug should be given 1-2 hours before the morning meal. Failure to comply with this requirement results in a complete lack of the desired effect.
The tablets are placed on the root of the tongue. But, it will be easier to crush them into powder, dilute them with a small amount of water and pour them into the gap between the teeth using a syringe.
Injections
Hormonal injections pose the greatest danger to animals. They are done at the veterinary clinic. First, with an interval between injections of 3-4 months, then 6, 12 or more.

Injection “Antisex” most often leads to negative consequences in the form of disruption of the functionality of the endocrine system, adrenal glands and the formation of malignant tumors. In this regard, veterinarians prescribe a similar drug in very rare cases and recommend sterilization or castration as quickly as possible.
Pills
You can also suppress sexual desire in cats using antisex tablets. They act in the same way as drops . Each tablet contains 7 mg of megestrol acetate. In pharmacies, this drug is offered in the form of strips of different sizes - from 3 to 24 tablets. They have a similar effect as other similar drugs - the mechanism of hormone production is blocked, an anti-estrogenic effect occurs, which subsequently causes suppression of sexual desire. The tablets are quickly eliminated from the animal’s body - usually this occurs 15 days after the last dose of the drug.
According to the instructions, it is not recommended to give this medicine for longer than 18 months in a row. To avoid complications, it is advisable to take a break of at least one full cycle of estrus or heat. This will allow hormones to recover. Then you can continue treatment.
The treatment regimen with antisex tablets for cats is as follows:
- To delay estrus, the animal is given one tablet for one week;
- To stop estrus, the cat should eat one tablet daily until all signs completely disappear.
Cats are treated somewhat differently: they are given one tablet every day from the moment signs of sexual desire appear for one week. Subsequently, the dosage is reduced to half a tablet, which is given for two weeks.
For absorption, the medicine is placed on the root of the cat’s tongue or added to the food 2-3 hours before the main feeding. In pharmacies the drug is offered at different prices. It all depends on the number of tablets in the package. For example, a strip containing 8 tablets costs about 20–30 rubles.
Analogs and price
The cost of the drug depending on the form of release:
- tableted - for 10 pcs. in a blister from 20 to 30 rubles;
- in drops - from 25 to 40 rubles. for 1.5 ml;
- injection - from 2,000 rub.
Analogues of this product are “Gestrenol”, “Stop-intim” and “Sex Barrier”.
“Antisex” belongs to a group of hormonal drugs for cats and dogs. Its action is aimed at suppressing sexual activity by suppressing the performance of the hypothalamus, which often leads to negative consequences for the animal body. It is not recommended to use the drug for a long time - it is better to sterilize it as quickly as possible.
Did you know? Cats do not have collarbones, so the animals can fit into any hole the size of their head.
Injections
Although sexual desire in cats can be reduced with the help of injections , this is not recommended, since this method of treatment poses the greatest danger to their health.
If the veterinarian has approved such a method of treatment, then you need to be extremely careful: at first you need to take a break of three to four months, then injections need to be done at intervals of at least 6 months. Subsequently, the break is increased to a year or more. However, according to veterinarians , it is worth resorting to injections only in emergency cases. Otherwise, there is a risk of the animal developing serious diseases, which can cause much more harm than taking tablets or drops.
Most breeders and doctors agree that it is best to refrain from treating cats that ask for a cat with an antisex drug. Safer and easier to carry out is castration or sterilization. Therefore, before deciding to take such a step, you need to consult a veterinarian.
