How to cut a poodle's hair? What types of haircuts are there?

Groom your poodle at home or at a groomer

If we are talking about an upcoming exhibition, then it is better to contact a professional master.

Note! Before contacting, it is important to make sure that the groomer has experience working with poodles. Dog fur is thick and complex, and you need to have sufficient skills to handle it.

A hygienic haircut can be carried out at home when the owner has the necessary skills and a set of tools. Otherwise, it is better to find someone who can get along with your pet.

Types of haircuts for poodles: overview of the most popular + execution diagram

The poodle is a decorative dog, a companion and friend of children.
France is considered its homeland. And the name comes from the German word “paddeln”, which means splashing in the water.

The dog has unsurpassed intelligence, artistry, and inexhaustible energy.

A distinctive feature of the breed is its thick coat, which requires careful grooming, and the absence of shedding.

Is it possible to cut a poodle's hair yourself?

The animal's coat is quite dense. During shedding, the hairs do not fall off, but remain in the pet's undercoat, so tangles and tangles often form. If you do not groom and trim the dog's coat, the dog's appearance will quickly become unkempt, skin pain may appear and infections may develop.

For a successful poodle grooming at home, you need to provide a calm environment, proper conditions and have the right tools.

The appearance of pets before and after the procedure is significantly different

Dog Show Grooming

There are several haircut options for a poodle (unlike some other dog breeds). You can choose any of the options, unless other conditions are included in the commission’s recommendations.

a lion

There are two varieties of this haircut - mapogo and Scandinavian. In the first option, the appearance of the pet after a haircut should resemble the corresponding animal. The hair on the body is shortened and leveled to the same size. On the tail, the hairs are removed to a minimum length, leaving a fluffy tip at the end.

In the second case - the Scandinavian Lion poodle cut - the coat is also shortened. But on the hind and forelimbs (on the thigh and lower leg) it is removed as much as possible, leaving rounded “boots” below. On the chest, the fur is formed into a ball - the more voluminous, the better.

Puppy or "Pappy"

This is one of the most popular poodle hairstyles at the show. The hair on the face is shortened as much as possible. The fur on the body is straightened, the paws are not shaved (only a small oval-shaped seal is allowed). The tail is decorated with a machine.

Continental

Continental is a bright and stylish haircut. The base is round in shape. The fur is decorated in a similar way on the tail, paws and chest. The machine is used to cut only in those places where the resulting balls are separated from each other, as well as on the paws and the base of the tail.

Modern

To cut a poodle in the modern style, the hair is leveled to the same length, leaving a little more length on the head, ears and withers. At the beginning of the tail, the tail is shaved with a machine, creating a pompom.

You can trim your poodle at home if the animal is calm

"English" or "English saddle"

The dog's muzzle is shaved with a machine, as well as the upper part of the limbs and the base of the tail. The paws are left with fluffy pom-poms, removing hair from the joints. The tail is made quite round and fluffy.

Classic poodle haircuts and how to cut a dog's haircut at home

The following are considered classic haircuts for a poodle: “lion”, “continental”, “English lion”, “English saddle”, “Scandinavian lion” . It is these haircuts that are allowed at international exhibitions (however, the “modern” haircut is still found). The rest of the haircuts are considered “at home”.

  • It is better to invite specialists for a haircut, but in some cases you can do a haircut at home yourself.
  • To create all these hairstyles, you need the following tools: a rubber brush, a comb with round teeth, a slicker brush with a soft curve, hairdressing scissors, and a welt cutter. It is advisable to start cutting your poodle's hair as early as possible, repeating the haircut every week after that.
  • They cut the dog after bathing, and only after drying the hair well. Before washing the poodle, comb it thoroughly - first with a sparse comb, and then with a slicker brush. In this case, tangles should be sorted out by hand, and very dense ones should be cut vertically and also sorted out. After this, the dog’s hair is again combed with sparse and frequent combs.
  • When washing, water gets into the dog's ears, which sometimes leads to otitis media (ear inflammation). To prevent this disease, insert a piece of cotton wool soaked in Vaseline into your dog’s ears. After this, thoroughly lather it twice with shampoo diluted in water and rinse equally thoroughly with warm water.
  • After washing, giving your pet the opportunity to shake himself off several times, remove the tampons from his ears, and wrap the dog in a large heated towel or sheet. And after a while, dry it with a hairdryer.
  • Dry the dog, starting from those parts where the hair is shortest - lifting a strand of hair with a comb or massage brush, directing a stream of warm air under it. When drying, the dog should be brushed against the grain and until completely dry to avoid the formation of unnecessary curls.

Now your dog is ready for a haircut.

Non-show poodle grooming

Non-exhibition haircut options are suitable for the daily appearance of pets. They will not be allowed into the exhibition with such hairstyles; they are suitable to suit the taste of the owners.

Kennel

On the one hand, this option is considered quite practical for decorating a poodle’s coat. On the other hand, constant length adjustment will be required. The fur is straightened using a machine, the paws are shaped with scissors - there is no need to completely remove the hairs.

On a note! The muzzle is not shaved, only trimmed short. The tail is left voluminous and quite fluffy, like the hair on the head and ears.

Lamb

Lamb or sheep - this option is in many ways similar to the previous haircut. It is important to leave volume by leveling the coat over the entire body. On the muzzle it is shortened a little, but not shaved.

Dutch

Haircutting is considered one of the most difficult - even a professional groomer is not always able to do it. Haircut takes quite a long time. It is suitable if the dog has fairly hard and thick hair. The master starts with the muzzle and paws, which should remain fluffy, but without pom-poms.

Korean

The Korean or Asian version involves cutting the fur step by step to one length (a bit like a puppy's haircut). A slightly longer cover is left on the face and ears to obtain sufficient volume. More hairs can be left on the bottom of the paws.

In addition to exhibition options, non-exhibition haircut methods are often used.

Sports

The hair from the body, face and paws of the animal is removed as briefly as possible. The master leaves a small round cap on the head; the length is maintained on the tail and ears (can be slightly adjusted and trimmed).

Clown

With a haircut, which professional groomers call a “clown”, the hair is removed to a minimum length. Fluffy bracelets are left on the lower part of the paws, and a pom-pom is left at the end of the tail. The head is decorated with a round cap, the ears are left long.

On a note! This haircut option is suitable for summer. The dog is not hot and comfortable. It’s easy to maintain a beautiful appearance even at home.

Veteran

As the name suggests, a veteran's haircut is often used to cut older pets. The back side is completely shaved; on the front, the coat is shaped like a lion with a voluminous mane.

Bikini

The fur on the entire body is trimmed short, leaving only the bracelets on the lower part of the paws. The tail and head are cut in the usual way. The haircut is quite simple and can be done even at home.

Bichon

In this case, dogs are cut mainly with scissors; clippers are practically not used. Externally, the pet should look like a Bichon Frize breed. On the body, the coat is styled like a puppy haircut, while the head remains rounded.

Dyeing the fur will make your pet's appearance truly vibrant.

teddy bear

This option practically copies the “puppy” hairstyle. The master does not process only the paws. With this haircut, the pet resembles a toy teddy bear.

Hygienic grooming

Caring for a poodle's coat is not just a decorative necessity. The hair of the breed grows quickly, is thick and somewhat fluffy, which is why tangles and tangles often appear.

Hygienic haircut is a mandatory procedure. It is carried out with the help of a professional groomer in the salon or at home, on a special table. In addition to space, you need to purchase equipment.

How to properly trim a poodle yourself

How to properly trim a poodle with your own hands? In order to independently perform any type of hairstyle, you must follow a certain sequence of procedures.

Preparatory stage

  • First you need to bathe your pet. The poodle is washed with shampoo, starting from the head, ending with the paws and tail. You should avoid getting detergent in your eyes and ears, as this can cause unpleasant consequences. By the way, while the poodle is in the bath or shower, you can take advantage of the moment and trim the overgrown nails.
  • Afterwards, you need to thoroughly rinse off the shampoo by repeatedly washing it with running warm water, then dry the hair with a towel.
  • Use a fine-tooth comb to comb after bathing. It is recommended to make movements against the wool, while drying the wool with a hairdryer.

Direct haircut

  • The fur over the entire body is combed back and trimmed using scissors and a comb, starting from the bottom and gradually moving up. Using this method, the “vest” is cut, keeping an oblique line in relation to the back of the head. From below, the movements of the scissors should repeat a semicircle, approaching the chest area;
  • The line of the paws should also be rounded; the only auxiliary items used are scissors;
  • To remove the top layer of fur on areas with the recommended minimum length, use a machine with a nozzle set to 0;
  • To create a really beautiful ponytail at the end of your ponytail, you need to use scissors. And the ideal shape can be found in photos on the Internet;
  • The hat on the muzzle, as well as the cuffs on the paws, are also made only with the help of scissors, trying to repeat the correct shape seen on the sample;
  • After completing the stages, you need to thoroughly comb the poodle, then use scissors to eliminate the missing areas.

Finishing the trimming

Upon completion of the actual trimming, firstly, you need to thank the poodle for his patience and endurance. You are even allowed to give a treat to show your encouragement. Then make sure that all the clipped hair is removed so that your pet does not eat it while licking the body.

After cutting, it is logical to clean the dog’s ears, since hair accumulates in them, and there may also be remnants of cut hair. It is important to carry out the cleaning procedure carefully so as not to harm the poodle's ears.

Now you can say with confidence that your dog is in the best possible shape, since he visited the bathhouse attendant, hairdresser and stylist in your person. After several haircut and hairstyle procedures, you will gain experience, and the result of the work will improve each time.

What is necessary

For home processing, you will need to prepare a place. Any stable horizontal surface (such as a table) will do.

Haircut is at the discretion of the owner

The main thing is that it is comfortable for the dog and the “hairdresser”. It is advisable to lay a rubberized mat on top. This will help the animal feel confident and not slip. It is important to ensure sufficient lighting levels. The following tools are prepared in advance:

  • hair trimmer;
  • scissors with well-sharpened blades (will help you style your hair at the final stage);
  • comb, brush with hard bristles (it is better to purchase metal tools rather than plastic ones);
  • tangle cutter (a special device for cutting out tangled lumps);
  • nail clipper

Note! The entire set is prepared in advance so that it is “at hand”. It is not recommended to interrupt the procedure.

The dog looks well-groomed and presentable after a haircut

Basic rules for grooming poodles

When grooming a dog, you must adhere to certain rules, regardless of the method or type of hairstyle. The main thing is that the pet should be comfortable and calm. Key points on how to cut a poodle's hair:

  • the dog must remain in one position throughout the entire procedure;
  • the wool is cut in the direction of hair growth;
  • movements with the machine are carried out carefully, repeating the outlines of the anatomical shape.

Important! All tools must be checked in advance: scissors with sharp blades, the machine is in good condition.

The color of the animal can be different, the main thing is timely care of the coat

How to trim paws and claws

Paws and claws are trimmed carefully. A special device is used for claws. Cut at an angle of 45°. It is important not to damage the blood vessels located in the inner part.

How to trim your face and head

A clipper is used to trim the fur on the animal's face. Move from the back of the nose to the ears, cheekbones last. The muzzle and neck are processed up to the protruding part of the chest.

How to trim ears and tail

Handle the ears carefully. The hair is cut with small scissors or a clipper. The tail is shaved from the base to 2-3 cm in length. The hair around the anus is cut as short as possible.

How to trim your belly

The animal's genitals are completely shaved. During hygienic cutting, the belly hair is cut from the navel to the reproductive system as short as possible.

Bathing after a haircut at home

The pet is bathed before and after the procedure. After clipping, the animal is placed in a small bath or container with warm water. Shampoo is purchased in specialized stores in accordance with the age of the dog. The fur around the eyes is lubricated with Vaseline and oil. The ears must be plugged with a cotton swab.

Note! To make the coat easier to comb after drying, use a special conditioner for dogs.

Haircut "Modern"

The Modern cut is the most common poodle cut. This style was officially recognized in 1960 by the FCI.

To properly trim a dog, you need to evaluate its exterior, i.e., body structure. The haircut should highlight the dog's strengths and hide its shortcomings.

Poodle haircut in 'Modern' style

First of all, you need to determine the dog’s format, i.e. the ratio of body length to height at the withers. The format can be square when the height at the withers is equal to the oblique length of the body; can be squared when the height at the withers is greater than the oblique length of the body, and stretched when the height at the withers is less than the oblique length of the body. Ideally, a poodle should be slightly stretched out. Most often, elongated dogs are found and sometimes over-squared ones.

Rice. 40. Poodle haircut in the 'Modern' style

It is more convenient to start cutting from the tail. With the left hand they tightly clasp the tail, together with the fur, squeeze it into a fist, and with the right hand they cut off the hair around the anus and below to the perineum. As a result, a flat, trimmed platform is formed under the tail - the seat. Then the lower jaw, throat and chest are shaved off down to the protrusion of the sternum.

Now, if you put the poodle on the table and lift his tail with your left hand, and hold his head up with your right hand, you can correctly assess the dog’s size and take it into account when cutting. A dog with a clearly elongated format (Fig. 39) needs to have longer hair on the back, a bushy tail and a large high cap on the head. When cutting, the waist should be moved closer to the chest due to the hair left in the groin and on the hind legs (Fig. 41). A dog with an almost square or square format needs to be cut following the natural contours of its body (Fig. 39 a). An over-crossed dog should be trimmed, leaving hair on the chest, seat and back of the hind legs (Fig. 41).

Rice. 39. Leave longer hair on the back, a bushy tail and a large tall cap on the head

Rice. 41. Leave hair on the chest, seat and back of the hind legs

The next factor that needs to be taken into account when cutting is the ratio of the height at the withers and the height at the rump. Ideally, the height should be the same, and the back should be flat and straight. The withers should not stand out. Most often, the height at the withers is less than the height at the rump (Fig. 42), then they speak of a low-front dog (or a high-backed dog, which is the same thing). Sometimes the withers are highly developed, and then they speak of a highly advanced dog.

Rice. 42. Long hair can be left on the croup, sometimes on the withers, sometimes on the lower back

In any case, the back is cut in such a way that a straight line is formed, parallel to the plane of the table on which the poodle stands. Sometimes the longer hair should be left on the croup, sometimes on the withers (Fig. 42), sometimes on the loin.

The fact is that in the structure of the poodle's topline there are often such shortcomings as a tense lower back, a hunchbacked or sunken back, and a sloping croup. In any case, you should strive to ensure that the top line is straight from the neck to the rump and smoothly rounded towards the tail. In this case, an ideally built poodle has a coat length of 5-10 mm everywhere and can be cut with a clipper. Most dogs have an imperfect topline and the length of hair left by the groomer in different areas varies and requires scissor work.

Now you need to give the dog the opportunity to rest; to do this, sit it down and begin trimming its head. Having combed the hair from the forehead back to the back of the head, the head is clasped from above with the left hand, covering the dog’s eyes, and the hair is cut off from the stop (the place where the forehead meets the muzzle) to the nose. After this, the hair on the head is combed well, the poodle's muzzle is firmly grasped with the left hand and the hair is cut off from the outer corner of the eye to the edge of the ear and down to the lower jaw. In this way, the cheekbones are trimmed, which in a poodle should be as less developed as possible and not stand out on the head. The hair under the eyes and down to the corners of the lips is also cut short. Now, by smoothing the whiskers remaining on the muzzle, you can evaluate the structure of the poodle's head.

The most common deficiencies are a wide skull and high cheekbones. In both cases, a cap is left hanging from the sides of the head. The muzzle is also not without its shortcomings - too long, narrow (thin), or too pointed in profile (with a poorly developed lower jaw). A poodle with a long muzzle needs to leave more hair on the foot so that the cap hangs over the muzzle (Fig. 49). When the muzzle is narrow and pointed, the fur is left on it in such a length as to hide these imperfections. If the chin is poorly visible, a little hair is left on it so that it stands out and the muzzle in profile is more blunt (Fig. 50). In any case, you should strive to ensure that two straight lilies diverge from the nose to the cheekbones. If this means leaving a large mustache that straightens the line and widens the muzzle, you need to ensure that the mustache does not hang over the lower lip, as this creates a slovenly impression. Ideally, a poodle should have a fairly long and full (thick) muzzle with good Fig. developed chin. Such a muzzle can be cut bald with a clipper, without leaving a mustache (Fig. 48, 49).

Rice. 49. Muzzle trim

Rice. 50. Muzzle trim

The question of a poodle's waist often arises. A poodle does not have any waist in the literal sense of the word and should not have one, since when viewed from above, the width of the back gradually decreases towards the lower back and Fig. croup without interceptions. When looking at a poodle from the side, the line of the chest from the elbows rushes steeply upward to the back and, where the chest ends, passes into the stomach, which is usually well tucked and forms a straight line from the chest to the perineum, and it is at the level of the perineum that the volume of the abdomen is least. Thus, anatomically, a poodle’s waist is absent and is formed only during cutting, namely by the front edge of the panties of the hind leg, which can be left at maximum width, or can be removed completely (Fig. 39 a; 40 b).

Continuing upward the line of the front edge of the panties of the back leg, you can bring it to the back, if the edge of the panties is wide, or to the hip and lower back, if the panties are made to fit the leg. Then you need to cut the inguinal fold into a triangle (Fig. 39 a) or draw it closer to the chest (Fig. 40 b) and start cutting the chest from the sides.

The poodle's chest can be deep, reaching down to the elbows and below, or shallow, not reaching the elbow, as well as wide and narrow. If the chest is shallow, longer hair is left on it at the bottom; if the chest is narrow, more hair is left on the sides. First, the chest is shorn, leaving more hair than necessary, since the final shape of the chest depends on the width of the panties of the front legs.

The panties of the front leg are cut evenly around the leg from the paw to the elbow, leaving the hair of the same length. From the elbow to the neck and to the head, when looking at the poodle from the front, there should be an almost straight line (Fig. 43). In this case, the hair on the elbow itself should be cut short, since if it is left long, then when moving, the impression of a protruding elbow may appear. For poodles, whose elbows are truly turned out, they are directed not strictly back, but outward, as in Fig. 44, this is especially important. When viewed from the side, the panties should smoothly meet the neck in an almost straight line, the chest may only protrude slightly.

Rice. 43. Cutting the panties of the front legs

Rice. 44. Cutting the panties of the front legs

It is convenient to trim the dog's belly when it lies on its back or stands on its hind legs. The coat is cut bare from the perineum to the second pair of nipples in females or 4 cm above the prepuce in males.

The lower part of the chest remains, as a rule, at its maximum length and rarely needs to be shortened in particularly woolly poodles. It should smoothly transition into the line of the abdomen without undermining.

Now, by smoothing the hair on the poodle's head and placing it in a stand, you can evaluate the proportionality of the head in relation to the body. The head can be proportional, light (small) and heavy (too big). For a light head, you need to leave a large, high cap and mane on the neck. A heavy-headed poodle should be left with minimal capping and as much hair on the body as possible. It is more convenient to trim the cap when the dog is standing. The ears need to be raised up and held above the dog's head with your left hand. The hair is cut bare from the cheekbones, under the ears down to the neck, smoothly moving to the shoulders. The back of the neck is also cut from the line connecting the ears down to the withers. If it is decided to leave the mane, then the back of the neck is left with 10-15 mm long hair (Fig. 40). At the same time, the sides of the neck are cut short, and the transition to the mane is made smoothly and imperceptibly, as if it were the neck itself that was so powerful. The transition of the mane at the top into the cap should also be unnoticeable and natural, as if the dog’s head is not small, but voluminous.

Having placed the poodle in a standing position with its head raised, the back side of the cap is shaped so that it meets an almost straight line of the neck without transition and smoothly curves forward towards the muzzle. When viewed from above, the cap usually resembles an oval, rarely a circle or an egg - it depends on the imagination of the master and the shape of the poodle's head. In an uncut dog, the length of hair on the head and on the ears in puppyhood is usually the same, and in order to separate the ear from the cap, you need to take the ear in your left hand, approximately in the middle, then place vertically slightly open scissors with the lower blade on the upper side of the ear, which you hold horizontally to plane of the table, and moving the scissors from the middle of the ear to its base, reach the head; here the hair caught between the blades of the scissors is cut off (Fig. 12), and the border between the base of the ear and the head becomes visible. This border usually determines the width of the cap when viewed from above, but the cap can also hang over the ears.

Sometimes the height of the cap is determined not by the desires of the hairdresser, but by the quality of the dog’s coat. In any case, after cutting, the hair on the head should stand vertically and not fall apart in the parting. If the wool falls apart, it needs to be shortened. When finalizing the cap on the head, the poodle usually has to stand on a stand for a long time, the fur is often combed, the head is shaken by the muzzle so that the fur lies more naturally. In short, the dog gets tired. You need to lay her down or sit her down and start trimming her paws. The paws on all 4 legs are trimmed bald around the toes and between the pads. Many poodles do not like to have their paws cut; the dogs have to be held by force, as they resist, but it is necessary to cut the fur so that fuel oil does not stick to the fur, and along with it sand and pebbles from our roads, causing unnecessary suffering to the poodle. When cutting paws, you can use a clipper.

After all four paws are trimmed, they move on to trimming the legs. It's better to start from the rear. In a regular-format poodle (Fig. 39), the front side of the panties from the groin to the knee follows the anatomical structure of the leg, i.e. the hair is removed very short. From the knee down to the paw, the panties are straightened, i.e., an almost straight line is drawn. The back of the panties to the crotch follows the anatomical structure of the leg, and then the hair begins to be left longer so that at the hock joint it reaches its maximum size, emphasizing well-defined articulation angles, even if in fact they are poorly developed - smoothed out. From the hock corner the panties sharply curve towards the paw. After the panty is decorated on the sides, it can be decorated on the back. The poodle is turned towards itself with its tail and the hair from the croup and hips is cut very short so that the poodle does not look fat-bottomed. Approximately at knee level, the pant begins to widen towards the hock joint, where it reaches its maximum width and sharply curves towards the paw. From the inside, between the legs, the panties are left so wide that they do not interfere with the free movements of the legs (Fig. 45).

Rice. 45. Cutting the panties of the hind legs

In dogs, there are many deviations in the position of the hind limbs - barrel-shaped position (Fig. 46), closeness of the hocks (Fig. 47), straightness of the angles of the joints, etc., but with the correct haircut you can hide most of them by “drawing” the leg. And vice versa, an illiterate haircut can depict the O-shaped stance of the hind legs and the smoothness of the joints with the normal structure of the limbs.

Rice. 46. Cutting the panties of the hind legs

Rice. 47. Cutting the panties of the hind legs

If the poodle has a too stretched format (Fig. 40), on the front side of the pants, when looking at the dog from the side, leave hair of natural length from the groin to the knee; and from the knee they cut in a straight line to the paw, but above the paw itself it is still better to leave the width of the front edge of the panties 1-3 cm. With any haircut, the paws should be visible from under the edge of the panties at the bottom. Pants that flutter on the ground create a sloppy appearance, while clipped paws, on the contrary, give the poodle an elegant look.

The tail should be spherical. If it is docked correctly, then a strip 1-2 cm wide can be cut on the base (Fig. 52); if the tail is docked short (and some veterinarians manage to cut it off completely), then you have to form a ball of hair on the tail from the very base - the root of the tail. If the hair on the bridge is short and sparse, there is no need to try to make a small ball at the very tip; it is better to depict a “carrot” (Fig. 52) or a “cylinder” (Fig. 51). If the coat is very thick and long, there is no need to leave a giant pompom. The size of the tail should be in harmony with the size of its owner.

Rice. 51. Tail cut

Rice. 52. Tail cut

Only in a fully trimmed poodle can the quality (fouling) of the ears be determined, since the ears of an overgrown dog always appear “small and short due to the thick hair on the body. For those poodles whose ear hair is beyond criticism, “false” ears were invented. Giving them to every poodle is a big mistake. The fact is that according to the standard, the ears should fit tightly to the head. Because of the false ears, the real ones stick out, which does not add to the beauty of the poodle. But in extreme cases this has to be done. The false ear is formed from hair growing under the real ear, around the pinna, in an area 3-4 cm wide (Fig. 13). Gradually, the hair there grows and becomes longer than on real ears. But in no case should it peek out from under the real ear in front or behind - only from below.

After the haircut, you need to let the poodle run around the room, shake itself off, and then put it on the table and correct any errors noticed in the haircut.

The “Modern” style assumes exceptional smoothness and naturalness of lines. The poodle should give the impression of extraordinary elegance and at the same time some kind of natural harmony. Any sharp line, disproportion, snatch or protruding piece of fur can spoil this impression. But if someone comes up to you on the street and asks: “Are poodles really like that? Are they born this way, or are they still cut?” - Know that you have achieved perfection in haircutting.

Instructions for performing a haircut according to the “Scandinavian Lion” pattern

Model haircuts are performed according to certain patterns. It is advisable to familiarize yourself with the nuances and video lessons in advance in order to understand how to trim a poodle at home, or attend a master class. Key points when styling your hair in the Scandinavian Lion style:

  1. The trimmer attachment is selected with a short length. It is installed and treated on the face, cheekbones, and neck.
  2. Then they move on to the hind legs.
  3. The groin area and thighs are cut as short as possible.
  4. A pompom is formed at the end of the tail.

In addition, bracelets are left on the limbs. The rest is cut to the desired shape with scissors.

"Modern"

For a modern haircut, the poodle is placed on a table and the pet's face is shaved. Males sometimes leave a mustache. A “cock” is formed on the top of the head. The improvised mane is cut with scissors from the neck to the sides. Pants are left on the paws.

"Hygienic"

For a hygienic haircut at home, use a standard set of tools. The dog is thoroughly treated and bathed twice.

"Korean"

Before the Korean haircut, the poodle is bathed, thoroughly washing off the remaining shampoo and conditioner. The wool is dried with a hairdryer, directing air to the base of the hairs. The pet is combed out. The body, neck and limbs are cut to a length of 2.5 cm.

Additional Information. A mustache and a small beard are formed on the muzzle. A groomed dog should look like a puppy. The maximum length is left on the ears.

Types of haircuts with photos

Scandinavian lion

When cutting the “Scandinavian Lion”, the hair on the dog’s head is cut straight to the neck, while the eyes should be visible.

The result is something like a crown. In the area of the muzzle, the hair is completely removed; if desired, a small mustache can be left on the lips.

On the ears, the hair is slightly trimmed, but left long . On the body (up to the last rib), neck and chest, the hair is left long, and the hips, croup, lower back, and shins are (partially) processed using a machine.

As a result, the dog resembles an elegant lion with a mane and pom-poms on its paws and tail..

Modern

In this case, the muzzle, paws, throat and base of the tail are trimmed to zero.

At the same time, the hair on all other parts of the body is shortened. In this case, the length of the coat according to the standard should not be shorter than 1 cm.

There are many varieties of “Modern” , so when performing exhibition grooming, the master must know all the requirements of the standard, since any mistake will lead to the disqualification of the dog .

Anglo-Saxon

At first glance, this model is very similar to a lion, but there are still some differences. The overall outline of the hairstyle is reminiscent of the Lion haircut, but the back is cut a little differently.

On the rump, in the groin, on the lower back, the hair is not shaved to zero . On these parts of the body, a fur coat approximately 1.2 cm long is left, and the tail is decorated with a pompom.

The fur on the face and throat is completely cut off . Particular attention is paid to the hind legs; at the request of the dog’s owner, beautiful bracelets of the correct shape are cut on the bottom.

Korean

A Korean haircut is usually a hairstyle based on a sheep's haircut, but the fur on the face is cut in a special way, after which the dog looks like a plush teddy toy and takes on a very cute appearance.

This hairstyle is done quite simply; the body, paws and neck are processed with a machine, while its length remains the same on all parts of the body..

According to the standard, it should not be shorter than 2.5 cm, longer hair is acceptable. The length of the hair on the head can be longer than on the body, but the transition should be very soft and unnoticeable.

Hygienic

As a rule, a classic haircut is done on animals that have a very neglected appearance. In this case, the hair on all parts of the body (head, muzzle, chest, back, front and hind limbs) is completely cut off.

This hairstyle requires extreme concentration from the artist, since wounds, abrasions, and other skin damage can be found under the tangles . Usually such a haircut is performed as a last resort, if there is no other way out.

The second type of hygienic haircut is maintaining shape. In this case, the master simply trims the contours of the hairstyle using a machine and scissors.

If, after a hygienic haircut, wounds and abrasions are found on your pet’s skin, they should be immediately treated with special solutions..

And after the procedure, you need to urgently show the dog to the veterinarian.

Continental

The Continental is a show cut . Here the groomer’s task is to create the ideal image of the dog.

In this hairstyle, the head, body, front and hind legs are styled in the same way as in the “Lion” haircut.

The only difference is 2 round pompoms on the animal’s rump.

Japanese

The Japanese (Asian) haircut gives the dog a very cute “toy” look. The main features of the Japanese style are neatly trimmed fur on the face and attention to detail.

Brightly colored strands, hairpins, bows and other decorations are all unique elements of Japanese style . As a result, the dog has a slightly cartoonish and cute appearance.

Another difference between the Japanese style and all others is its individual approach.

Here the haircut is tailored to the pet's character and is done very professionally . After this, the coat will be easy to care for, and the dog will have a neat appearance for a long time.

Which haircuts are best for puppies, miniature and toy poodles?

Initially, poodles were not cut for beauty. Long hair prevented dogs from hunting and entering holes.

Haircut options for small dogs:

  • Puppies are treated hygienically, leaving hair as short as possible. The “puppy” or “clown” option is suitable.
  • Miniature poodle haircuts are divided into classic and model. If an exhibition is planned, it is necessary to clarify the recommendations of the commission members.
  • Various options are suitable for toy poodles - teddy bear or urku, puppy, sports and others.

It is important to accustom your dog to using a hairdryer when drying wool from puppyhood.
