Alabai (Central Asian Shepherd)

The Alabai or Central Asian Shepherd Dog is an indigenous breed of dog with an ancient history and powerful physique. The animal is striking in its enormous size, but the main characteristic of the breed is its genetically transmitted guard instinct. These dogs feel superior to others, so this dog is not suitable for every dog lover.

In almost every country in Central Asia, dogs have their own breed name. Central Asian Shepherd Dog is the official international name. The name Alabai comes from Turkmenistan, it literally means “variegated and rich”. In Kazakhstan, the breed is called Tobet, the meaning of the word literally is “dog on the mountain”. In Uzbekistan, Asians are called Buribasar - translated as wolfhound. In other regions, the names Alapar and Sagi-Alabai are found.

Breed characteristics

According to many breeders, the Central Asian Shepherd is among the top 5 strongest dogs in the world. This is deserved, because the breed is not only physically developed, but also has innate protective instincts and an outstanding character. The Alabaevs have no fear of their rivals, be it an unwanted aggressive guest or an equally powerful dog.

Brief information about the breed

The description of the breed can begin with the external and psychological characteristics of the breed:

  • The height of a mature male at the withers reaches 70-75 centimeters. A dog grows up to three years of age and only then can it be called an adult; before that, the CAO can be considered a puppy. The average height of females is slightly smaller, but also rather large - 65-67 centimeters. In the vastness of Central Asia, there are indigenous representatives of the breed that reach 90 centimeters in height.
  • The Asian Shepherd has the appropriate body weight. Males weigh on average 50-60kg, females weigh a little less - about 40-50kg. The impressive dimensions of the dog resemble a calf.
  • Alabai Shepherd Dogs can have different coat colors depending on the variety. Only gray-blue and liver color are considered disqualifying characteristics of the breed.
  • Dog experts believe that the SAO is one of the smartest breeds with highly developed intelligence.
  • The character of the dog is one of the main advantages of the breed. They are brave, courageous and proud. However, Asians are not suitable for everyone; at the genetic level, they have protective qualities and dominance. At the same time, these dogs are suitable for friendship with people with the same indestructible character, in which case they become the best companion dogs.
  • One of the reasons for the strong popularity of wolfhounds is their developed protective instincts. Not a single unwanted guest will risk crossing the border of your yard, and if they do, they will greatly regret this decision.

Many dog lovers, not understanding the characteristics of the breed, leave them to live in small enclosures. Alabai undeniably deserves a better quality of life. You should not buy an Alabai puppy if you are not sure that you can provide him with his needs.

Alabai breed standard

Despite the fact that Central Asian Shepherds have a thousand-year history, the first breed standard was drawn up in 1990. After 20 years, in 2010, the FCI standard was updated under the name FCI No. 335 “Central Asia Shepherd Dog”. An abbreviated version of the document can be summarized in a table:

Any deviation from the above standards is considered a disqualifying fault. Such defects must be properly qualified, because this determines whether a particular dog is recognized as a purebred dog, for example:

Whether a particular dog belongs to the Central Asian Shepherd breed is checked by specialists from canine organizations.

A common myth: in the countries of the former USSR it is believed that dogs of the Alabai breed must have cropped ears and tails. In fact, undocked ears and tails are of equal value to docked ones.

Varieties of colors and coat types

To explain what Central Asian Shepherd dogs look like, you need to show photographs of them. A variety of coat colors are available and acceptable: white, black, black and white, red, brindle, gray, spotted, white and red. The most common are snow-white ones; they are popularly called albinos, although they are not such.

The tiger-colored Alabai makes a special impression; this coat color in the human subconscious creates an even greater fear of the power of such dogs. Tibetan white alabai are valued less than others, but they are the most widespread.

Alabais come in two types of coat: smooth-haired and long-haired. These species can mate with each other, but long-tailed owners are not willing to make such deals.

Brown coat color is considered a fault for the breed.

Age size chart

Knowing the weight and height of an Alabai depending on age helps to understand how healthy the dog is, whether feeding is sufficient and other interesting things. It is known that Central Asian Shepherds grow up to the age of three years. And only after this time you will see an adult Alabai with a fully formed appearance.

At the same time, a one-year-old puppy may no longer differ in size from an adult dog, everything is individual. After a year, active growth usually stops and it is hardly noticeable.

What is alabai intended for?

In ancient times, in Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan) they were used to protect cattle from wild animals. The population then was relatively small and wild predators were not afraid to come to the villages for prey. Therefore, after grazing, Asian Shepherds guarded the house.

Nowadays, the need to protect livestock from animals has sharply decreased. Nevertheless, the watchdog qualities of this breed remain, so in modern realities the CAO is used for the following purposes:

  • Security of private houses;
  • Security of industrial enterprises;
  • Personal protection;

At the same time, its terrifying appearance does not prevent the Central Asian Alabai from remaining a companion dog. Bred to guard herds, the dog has found its place in the modern world and remains popular.

Characteristics

  1. The breeds of this group were improved as a result of painstaking selection work. They do not need a home, and their acute hearing allows them to intensely perceive the world around them. From a very early age, animals are trained by shepherds to accompany and protect the herd.
  2. It is customary to dock the tails and ears of shepherd dogs to prevent infection of the latter in the event of a possible fight with a wolf or other dogs.
  3. Asians have well-developed trunk muscles. They have a wide, straight back and a slightly sloping croup. The limbs are strong, straight, and the joints of the front legs are well developed, which allows the animal to walk long distances. Thanks to its short coat, it is easy to care for and is resistant to dirt.
  4. Central Asian dogs are characterized by a well-developed protective instinct without excessive aggression. They are wary of strangers, so it is best to keep them on a leash. It is necessary to train and socialize an animal from a very early age.

Dogs are quite loyal to other animals living on their territory. They are friendly towards the owner's family. Increased aggression in them can only be found due to the deliberate cultivation of this quality by a person.

Breeders of the Central Asian group should remember that walking them near other dogs without a leash and muzzle is dangerous, since aggressiveness can often appear.

History of the breed

The breed was formed by folk selection over four thousand years. The history of the breed is closely connected with its habitat, this is the expanse from the Caspian Sea to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (China) and from the Magnitogorsk region to the northern regions of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and India. Historians believe that the ancestor of the breed is the Tibetan mastiff.

Alabai is considered a national treasure of Turkmenistan.

Oddly enough, the active development of the breed began in the first half of the existence of the USSR. The use of dogs to protect industrial and government buildings began at the all-Union level. Only after several decades such stimulation of breeding of the CAO stopped, the average Asian Shepherd was recognized as difficult to train.

Only in 1990, the State Agrarian Industry of the Turkmen SSR developed and approved a breed standard, a document that recognizes the existence of a separate Alabai breed.

Main types of Asian Shepherd

Many East Asian countries worked to improve this breed, resulting in several varieties. Today, the Asian Shepherd is represented by four main types: Turkmen, Uzbek, Kazakh and Tajik. The Turkmen breed called the wolfhound is considered the primary and most purebred. But today you can often find a small number of Asians that appeared in the process of interbreed matings - these are Tibetan, Caucasian and Turkish Alabais.

Personality: aggressive or kind?

Harsh climatic conditions and high demands on representatives have shaped the character traits of Central Asian Shepherd Dogs. During the evolution of the dog, the aborigines gained fearlessness, endurance and endurance. They are independent and will not follow commands for treats; they obey only one owner, who has been raising them since childhood.

Depending on the method of upbringing, the alabai becomes angry at the age of 6 months. This is a real fighting breed and it is impossible to imagine who could be stronger than the Alabai. They fight until their last breath, never give up or run away, and do not try to make the enemy feel sorry for them. You can watch a video of Alabai in battle here. By the way, I recently wrote about who is stronger and smarter: the Alabai or the German Shepherd.

On the Internet you can find shocking footage of Alabai attacking a person or biting its owner. Yes, there are such cases. For the sake of fairness, it must be clarified that the number of such cases is negligible. Cases of attacks on humans cause huge resonance due to the power of the dog.

Reviews from owners overwhelmingly say that the dogs are calm and balanced. I have already written about the attitude of the Alabais towards children here. Proper coexistence between dog and human must go hand in hand with respect.

At the same time, the character of East Asian Shepherds is such that they will protect the owner and his family until the last breath. Alabai is loyal and kind to his own people, but evil to those who are inadequate. An attack on a person is usually associated with aggressive behavior on the part of the latter.

Cowardly Alabai. The breed standard states that cowardice is a fault and a disqualifying characteristic.

Features of dogs

Central Asian breeds differ in their willfulness from the Sotal breeds.

These features include impeccable performance qualities:

  • Large head, strong jaws;
  • Torso with well-developed muscle mass;
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing external factors;
  • Steady, stable psyche;
  • High level of independence.

The necessary qualities were selected and consolidated over many centuries in a row, which were required for use in herding large flocks of sheep and protecting the home.

They differ from other herding dogs in their more powerful, rough appearance, lightning-fast reaction, high mobility, and ability to resist a wolf.

Care and maintenance

The structure of the coat allows the Alabai to be considered an unpretentious breed; even after a night on the ground, just a few minutes allow the dog to be relatively clean. It is not recommended to bathe dogs frequently, no more than twice a year. The Central Asian Shepherd sheds just like many others - twice a year, at which time it is necessary to comb out the dead hair.

There is no need to trim your nails or clean your ears on a schedule. All this is done as needed, rarely more than once a year.

Nutrition: 5 rules of feeding

Looking at the size of such a pet, you need to understand that it eats a lot. Alabai eats about 2-3 liters of porridge a day, but everything is very individual. Such dogs can eat both natural and dry food. These 5 rules will help you feed the Alabai correctly:

  1. The diet must contain meat, at least 10% of the total food mass;
  2. It is considered normal when the Alabai's ribs are not visible, but they are easy to feel. Do not overfeed or torture dogs with restrictions.
  3. Do not introduce CAO to premium food, it is not cheap;
  4. It is better to switch your dog to dry food in the summer, when natural food quickly deteriorates in the open air;
  5. The basis of the diet can be oatmeal, buckwheat or rice porridge.

The transition from natural food to dry food is not always easy, since high-quality food does not contain flavorings or flavor enhancers. The Alabai diet must be balanced; it most often includes the following products:

  • Raw meat, chicken;
  • By-products;
  • Fish;
  • Buckwheat, rice or oatmeal;
  • Dairy products;
  • Chicken eggs;
  • Vegetables and fruits.

At the same time, Central Asian Shepherds can suffer from chocolate, pork, potatoes, white bread and semolina. You need to be careful with pearl barley porridge, canned food and spicy foods.

You can often hear complaints from owners of this breed that the Alabai has been eating poorly since childhood for 2 years, but what does “eating poorly” mean? The fact that huge South Asian, Turkish, Uzbek or Tajik alabai eat in buckets is a common myth. Usually, 1 liter of food per meal is enough for a Central Asian Shepherd Dog.

Diet chart for a purebred dog for a week:

Read Comparison of Akita Inu and Labrador: choosing the best dog

Monday FridaySaturdaySunday
0.5-1 kg of meat1.5 kg meat by-products0.5 kg vegetables
0.5 kg buckwheat or rice0.5 kg oatmeal1 kg cottage cheese
0.3 kg vegetables0.3 kg crackers1 liter of kefir or milk
1 chicken egg0.3 kg of cereal of your choice

Particular attention to diet should be determined in the period up to one year. If an adult dog eats junk food without any problems, this can lead to serious consequences for a puppy. Puppies are usually given food containing more vitamins and minerals. It is during this period that owners usually add special vitamin supplements to the food.

Content: at home or on the street?

These dogs are definitely not suitable for keeping in an ordinary city apartment, with the exception of apartments with an area of 120 square meters or more. Such large dogs are well suited for guarding private homes. We can confidently say that a chained dog, or one placed in an enclosure, will be much happier than his brother locked in an apartment.

It is important to accustom the Alabai to an enclosure if you intend to keep it there. Dog handlers recommend throwing treats into the cage and when the pet runs into the enclosure after it, be sure to praise and encourage the dog. Training lasts more than one day, but even the most experienced trainers use this method.

Owners note that Central Asian Shepherds tolerate frost well. At the same time, it is important to insulate the floor of the booth with straw, and the walls can be lined with foam plastic; at the entrance, you can hang a thick carpet curtain. Be sure to teach your dog to enter the aisle of a kennel with a curtain. Even in frosty weather of 20 degrees, it is not recommended to invite the CAO into the house. If the dog is on a chain and is not used to severe frosts, it is better to let him out at night to run around the closed area of the house.

Walks

A dog breeder buying an Alabai must understand that such a large dog needs long walks every day. You need to walk your North Asian Shepherd dog for at least an hour and a half a day. It is considered normal to walk 3-4 hours a day. The dog should be allowed to feel different types of surfaces with its paws (soil, crushed stone, cones in the forest, asphalt).

When purchasing a Central Asian Shepherd puppy, be prepared to meet the needs of this breed!

Does an Alabai need clothes?

SAOs have good and durable wool, they do not freeze at temperatures down to minus 20 degrees, so it is not worth purchasing clothes for Alabai for warmth. The dog may need a durable overall that will protect the dog's body when walking in the forest. A raincoat or blanket can protect your dog from the rain if you keep your dog indoors. In other cases, buying clothes for such a dog is pointless.

Training and education

Training is not an easy task and it needs to start from the first months of a puppy’s life. It is best to entrust such a complex task to an experienced dog handler. At a minimum, the puppy must take an obedience course and learn basic commands. A disobedient dog of this size poses a threat to others and the dog’s owner.

The initial principle of training is to establish contact; the dog must respect the owner, feel the strong character and superiority of the owner. Alabais have good intelligence and, with a good owner, quickly learn commands. First of all, the puppy is taught to follow basic commands:

  1. Sit!
  2. Place!
  3. Lie!
  4. To me!
  5. Near!

The owner gives commands with his voice and accompanies them with gestures. Over time, the pet will learn to respond when given one type of instruction; owners usually choose to give commands by voice.

How long do Alabai live: 3 rules for a healthy dog

The life expectancy of Central Asian Shepherds is on average 12-15 years. The lifespan depends on the conditions of detention: a dog will live longer at home than on the street. For a healthy and long life you need to adhere to certain rules:

  1. Alabai must have all standard vaccinations;
  2. Feeding should be balanced and moderate;
  3. The dog must lead an active lifestyle (walks);

Common diseases

This is a healthy breed with no genetically transmitted diseases. At the same time, improper maintenance can provoke obesity, heart attacks, joint diseases, and hypothyroidism. Often, elderly Alabais develop hip dysplasia. The reason for this is the large size of the animal. To prevent joint problems, you can give your dog special supplements.

Veterinarian Roman Baranyak agreed to answer frequently asked questions in private regarding diseases of Central Asian Shepherds:

Denis Paparampam: Why does my Alabai eat poorly? We give him porridge with a small amount of meat, he eats about 1/3 of the saucepan.

R. Baranyak: You need to understand all aspects of your pet’s problem. First of all, what size is this “saucepan”? How often do you give your dog the same porridge? Often dog owners think in stereotypes that CAO should eat in buckets, but this is not true. These dogs are not as voracious as people usually think. But if the dog does not eat at all, there may be many reasons that are best determined when visiting the clinic.

Margarita: My Alabai is limping. There is one peculiarity here: in the absence of any fights since last fall, he limps on his front paw. Now it’s January and I see that he’s already limping on his hind leg. I don’t understand what to do, it hurts to look at a previously completely healthy dog.

R. Baranyak: If no wounds or abrasions were noticed on the animal’s body, then the problem may be in the joints. Typically, such problems in CAO develop closer to 10 years of age. First of all, I recommend immediately visiting your nearest veterinarian. Secondly, start taking chondroprotectors, for example Gelacan or Chondrolon. But it would be best if a specialist examines the dog and prescribes proper treatment.

Vladimir: The dog’s eyes constantly fester, what could be the reason and how to fix it?

R. Baranyak: First of all, you need to establish the cause; it could be allergies, infections, injuries, or simply the anatomical features of a particular dog. Unfortunately, I cannot make a diagnosis through such a short, non-specific question. The eyes should be carefully wiped with a cotton pad moistened with Albucid.

Vitya: The dog is constantly shaking his head, what could it be?

R. Baranyak: Most often, the reason for this behavior is a problem with the ears. These could be manifestations of allergies, mites, otitis media or something else. Look inside your dog's ear. I will not prescribe treatment because there are no details.

Vaccinations

Timely vaccination will protect any dog from many dangerous diseases. Central Asian Shepherds are vaccinated according to the following scheme:

  1. At 2-3 months the first vaccination against plague, enteritis, and rabies takes place;
  2. At 5-8 months, vaccinations are given against parainfluenza, viral hepatitis and letospirosis;
  3. Further vaccination takes place once a year.

It must be remembered that sick dogs with weak immune systems should not be vaccinated.

Estrus, mating and birth of Alabais

Breeding Alabais requires knowledge of the organization of mating, estrus, pregnancy, and childbirth. Properly organized mating will help produce healthy offspring, which can then be sold at a profit or kept for yourself.

Alabais are in heat

The female becomes physiologically mature by the age of two years; before this period they cannot be mated. The CAO usually comes into heat once a year, from late summer to late winter. But there are cases of estrus twice a year, in autumn and spring. If the owner does not plan to breed puppies, then it is better to sterilize the bitch.

Alabaev mating

Alabais are usually bred in the fall, at which time the number of puppies sold increases noticeably and the price drops. To sell your litter more profitably, you should try to breed in the spring in order to put the litter up for sale by summer. Only completely healthy representatives with all documents confirming their breed affiliation are eligible for breeding.

The first mating should occur between the ages of two years for a female and a male, but the male should be slightly older. Mating is carried out exclusively on the territory of the male dog, where he will feel calm. After the first act, you will need to do it again after 2-3 days, this is done to ensure a positive result.

Pregnancy

The gestation period for puppies in female Central Asian Shepherd dogs is 58-65 days. The litter may be born faster due to the large mass or during the first pregnancy, but the deviation usually does not extend beyond one or two days.

The first sign of pregnancy in a bitch is the appearance of mucous discharge from the loop. They usually appear 15-20 days after mating. After a month, you can already notice other symptoms of pregnancy - the belly increases in volume, the nipples swell and slight hair loss is observed.

Childbirth

A week before giving birth, the female’s nesting instinct is triggered. It is best to provide her with such a place yourself; select a convenient place for the dog and accessible to the owner. You need to make sure that the female does not climb into hard-to-reach places to give birth; you will be able to get puppies from there only after a couple of months.

Typically, a female Alabai gives birth to 6-8 puppies, which is quite a lot. In cases of more puppies in the litter, their mortality increases. The stronger puppies survive.

Pros and cons of the breed

This breed has many advantages, but before buying a CAO puppy you need to know about the disadvantages, of which there are also many.

  • High guard qualities;

  • Unpretentiousness in nutrition and care;
  • Loyalty to the owner;
  • Endurance, power, courage.
  • Poorly socialized;

  • Unpredictability of behavior on foreign territory;
  • Not suitable for urban environments;
  • Long walks are required.

Breed characteristics and character

Alabai were gregarious individuals, which for more than one millennium were hardened by harsh climate conditions and constant struggle with predators. For these reasons, they still have the desire to take a leadership position.

Many dog breeders, when choosing this breed, forget about these characteristics, thereby making an irreparable mistake. As a result, the pet, seeing a violation of the hierarchy, can show aggression towards family members, considering them to be lower in status.

Central Asian Shepherd dog on a walk

Another difficulty in keeping an animal is their character and mental abilities. The Alabaevs can truly be called indigenous Asians. They have a spirit of nobility, devotion, and honor.

Highly developed mental abilities put Central Asian Shepherds ahead of other breeds. They are independent, independent, able to analyze the situation and make independent decisions.

If Alabais see that stupid obedience is required of them, they begin to show aggression. Therefore, to turn these mental qualities in the right direction, it is necessary to get puppies at an early age. Weaned puppies at the age of 1 month become independent from their mother and respond well to training.

Negative reviews from owners

Winston032: From the first day we acquired our Alabai puppy, we have been struggling with food allergies. The cattle breeder kept silent about the fact that the puppy’s parents suffered from allergic reactions. Most importantly, to this day we cannot determine what exactly causes such reactions. The dog is constantly itching and shaking his head. We change food twice a week. Already tired of Alabai. Be careful when buying puppies, this can cause problems for a long time.

Maradona: Be prepared to fight the Asian character from the first days of your life together. If you dream of a big, balanced dog, maybe this will happen, only in 2-3 years. Until then, you will have to beat against the rock of “his greatness” every day. You will spend a lot of money on training basic knowledge; dog handlers don’t work for vodka now.

Ryndych: You say it’s a myth that it eats a lot? My dog is real and eats half a 12 liter bucket of porridge a day. You will say that this is not little. Well, so be it, but I’m ready to exchange dogs with someone and take something smaller for myself. Dry food you say? This should only work for this Alabai if you don’t give him cheap dry food.

Selection and prices of puppies in Russia

When purchasing an Alabai puppy, be sure to check the documents and not make a purchase if they are missing. This guarantees you at least some guarantee of stability in the puppy’s behavior in the future. Ideally, it is best to buy from reputable breeders who can introduce the buyer to the puppy's parents. It is worth noting that the first vaccination of puppies is also carried out by the breeder, at his own expense.

When purchasing, the future owner must make sure that he has a veterinary passport and puppy records, and also check the data in them.

A simple technique can be used to identify the healthiest puppy in the litter. Throw a treat in front of the puppies; you need to choose a puppy from among those who reached it first. It is believed that males are calmer than females, especially during the period of heat.

The price of puppies in Russia ranges from 10,000 rubles to 70,000 rubles. The cost varies depending on the availability of documents and the quality of the pedigree. Thus, puppies are divided into 3 classes:

  1. Pet class. The simplest puppies, they can be bred further, they are purebred and have all the relevant documents. They cost from 8 to 15 thousand rubles.
  2. Breed-class. Puppies are purebred and fully comply with the breed standard. Such a puppy costs from 15 to 30 thousand rubles.
  3. Show-class. Puppies with unique characteristics of the breed, potential exhibitors. Typically, the pedigree of such puppies suggests that the parents have many awards. Price from 30 thousand rubles.

If you do not have documents, we do not recommend buying a puppy. We remind you that one of the defects of the breed is excessive aggressiveness; the seller may not have documents in this regard.

Nursery addresses

The breed is popular in Russia and other countries of the former USSR, so the number of nurseries is huge. We will name only the most popular ones:

  1. Russia: “Sheriff Aga” (Moscow), Shilele (Nizhny Novgorod), Shakhriyar (St. Petersburg), Turkmen-Kala (Tver region).
  2. Ukraine: “AK SHIYAT” (Kyiv), “Kara Yulduz” (Sumy), “PitomnikDog” (Kharkov).
  3. Belarus: “Iz KIFY” (Baranovichi), “Triple” (Minsk).

Approximate cost of a puppy

If you feel strong enough to raise such a dog, you will invariably have a question about the cost of the puppy. It all depends on where you plan to buy it: from hand, at a poultry market or in a good nursery. It is worth noting that the first two options are not very reliable.

At the market, an inexperienced dog breeder may be offered a non-purebred, sometimes sick baby, brought from nowhere. Private breeders treat the “product” more responsibly. Their babies are well-fed and well-groomed. They will assure you that these are real Asian Shepherd puppies, but most likely they will not be able to provide evidence of the purity of the breed. This option will cost you approximately 5–7 thousand rubles.

Another thing is a nursery with a good reputation. Here you have the opportunity to find out information about the puppy's parents. Upon purchase, you receive a package of documents confirming the pedigree and giving the right to participate in exhibitions. Over time, you can become a breeder yourself and build a business from it. The cost of such a puppy is 15–45 thousand rubles. The price depends on the pedigree and exhibition achievements of the parents. This option is the most reliable, since well-known nurseries value their reputation.
