Description of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier breed: character traits and reviews from owners

The 21st century was marked by the extraordinary popularity of decorative dog breeds among the population of megacities. Of all the “pocket” dogs, the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier is of particular interest. This young breed, which has quickly spread throughout the world, is distinguished by its bright exterior characteristics and friendly temperament. Even the process of creating beavers is of interest to dog handlers around the world. Read about the characteristics of this breed below.

Biewer York: description of the breed

History of the breed

Often when thinking about the Yorkie, the Yorkshire Terrier, which appeared in the 19th century, comes to mind. The Biewer Yorkie is a young breed. This dog appeared as an independent breed only at the end of the 20th century. The British Yorkshire Terriers are considered direct descendants of Biewers.

Initially, small dogs were the prerogative of the poor. In Great Britain in the 17th-18th centuries, only the nobility were allowed to own large dogs. Representatives of the poor used small and agile dogs to protect their houses. Therefore, small terriers were extremely popular.

In the 19th century, the Yorkshire Terrier became popular not only in England. The breed spread throughout Europe and reached America. The terrier already had certain exterior parameters. The appearance of the Biewer Yorkie is associated with Germany.

This dog appeared as an independent breed at the end of the 20th century.

German owners of purebred Yorkies, spouses Werner and Gertrud Biever, have been actively breeding these decorative dogs for many years. Until in 1984, a puppy with a non-standard coat color appeared in one of the litters. The black, white and golden girl, nicknamed Snowflake, became the founder of a new breed. The Beaver couple became interested in the unusual color of the dog. All their subsequent efforts were aimed at fixing this color in the genotype. And already in 1988, at an exhibition in Wiesbaden, the Beavers showed the fruit of their labors - a black and white decorative dog.

Interesting! It is not known for certain what served as the basis for the appearance of new colors of dog fur. There are two main versions. The first claims that the unusual color is a manifested recessive gene, which, during many years of selection, became entrenched and became dominant. According to the second theory, Biewers appeared from interbreeding, in which the Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Maltese, etc. took part.

Breed creator Werner Biewer

The year 2004 was marked by the creation of an international Biewer Canine Club in Germany. The main breed standard for Biewer Yorkies was fully established in 2007. After this, decorative babies began to quickly spread throughout the world. This is how a new breed of lap dogs was formed - the Biewer-Yorkshire Terrier a la pom-pom.

Interesting Facts

  • With age, the Biewer Yorkie's color becomes lighter. By two years, the black color may fade to blue, and the golden color to beige.
  • Although the creators of the breed claim that the unique color was the result of a genetic mutation, many breeders do not believe them. As a result of genetic analysis, it was revealed that Biewers differ from British Yorkies at the DNA level. There is a possibility that the Biewer Yorkie was the result of crossing the classic Yorkie with a Shih Tzu and a Maltese.
  • The Biewer Yorkshire Terrier is considered hypoallergenic. There is no unpleasant dog smell coming from it.

Description of the Biewer York breed

Reference! Biewer Yorkies have a characteristic feature: they are able to bloom. Usually the color becomes lighter as the year progresses. It happens that the fur changes its original color by the age of three. With this phenomenon, black fur turns blue, and the red shade lightens to beige.

Distinctive features

An adult Biewer Terrier dog should not exceed 27 cm at the withers, and the weight of the animal should be 2-3.5 kg.

Dogs have a compact build, all parts of the body are harmoniously combined with each other. The body is slightly elongated, the chest is well developed, the stomach is tucked, the back is muscular, the tail can be docked by 1/3 of the length, the shape of the tail resembles a sickle.

The dog's paws are small, parallel, and the hock joints are well defined. The dog's movements are light and wide.

The Biewer's head is small, the skull is flat, and the neck is long. Round eyes are medium in size, with dark brown or black irises.

The dog's lips are adjacent to the teeth. Due to the fact that the dog's lower jaw is shorter than the upper, the animal looks constantly smiling. The triangular, raised ears are set wide apart.

Note! Failure to meet official breed standards does not prevent Bievers from being loyal and cheerful dogs.

Without people, puppies get sad and bored

Biewer diseases

Decorative breeds have their own characteristics. Biewer Yorkies are no exception. Features of babies are the diseases to which these dogs are susceptible. Hereditary and acquired diseases occur in little companions:

  1. Extrahepatic portacaval (portosystemic) shunts are an incorrect connection of parts of the portal vein when the branches of the vein bypass the liver. Because of this vascular pathology, the dog does not develop and suffers from constant convulsions and vomiting. If surgery is not performed, death is possible.
  2. Pancreatitis in acute form. Biewers have a delicate digestive system. Due to an unbalanced diet or overfeeding, pancreatic disease may occur.
  3. Other misfortunes are also associated with an incorrectly composed diet: the formation of tartar and gum disease.
  4. Fractures or dislocations of limbs often occur when the dog is not handled carefully. Little fidgets are extremely active. If they jump from furniture unsuccessfully, they can easily break their paw.
  5. Long bangs that fall over the eyes can cause your dog to have vision problems. It is recommended to pin your bangs. Moreover, a ponytail gathered and secured with a beautiful hairpin on the pet’s head looks cute and playful.

Biewer Yorkies are recommended to have their bangs pinned up.

To avoid any health problems for your four-legged friend, it is recommended to closely monitor him and regularly visit the veterinarian

Health and treatment

Beavers are prone to infectious diseases and congenital pathologies.

  1. Yorkies often have problems with blood vessels (observed in puppies). The disease stops the baby's growth. The disease is accompanied by vomiting and convulsions. Treatment is possible through surgery.
  2. An unbalanced diet and excess fatty foods destroy pancreatic tissue and cause pancreatitis, the worse of which can lead to the death of a Biewer. A strict diet and low-calorie menu is required.
  1. If you notice lameness that cannot be explained, you need to check your pet for Legg-Perthes syndrome - necrosis of the femur, muscle atrophy. You can only get rid of this pathology through surgery.

Worms and ticks lead to serious problems. They are carriers of infections and viruses. Therefore, it is advisable to take your pet to the veterinarian for examination once a month.

Ask a Question

A number of genetic diseases are associated with a dog's ancestry. Before purchasing a puppy, it is recommended to study its pedigree.

How much does this little beauty cost?

In Russia, Biewer Yorkies are especially popular in Moscow and St. Petersburg. But in the regions, this little beauty is also increasingly acquiring an army of admirers. Before buying a beaver, you need to decide for what purpose it is being purchased. If the future owner’s priority is participation in exhibitions and further breeding, then you need to purchase a dog from trusted professional breeders. In the nurseries, the potential buyer will be presented with the necessary documents for the baby and will be provided with complete information about the puppy’s relatives. Such a purchase will cost approximately 50-60 thousand rubles.

If you buy a dog “for yourself,” then you don’t have to go into the details of the family tree, but purchase a puppy through private advertisements or at the bird market. The main thing is to check that the baby is healthy and active. In this case, a small beaver will cost 15-20 thousand rubles.

Important! The ideal age to buy a baby is 3-4 months. By this time, the puppy will have received all the necessary vaccinations. If a particular individual was born with pathologies in appearance and development, then at 4 months everything will be visible. It is not recommended to purchase adult dogs, as they are very difficult to bear parting with the previous owner.

Reviews from happy owners

After analyzing reviews of Biewer dogs on the Internet, we can conclude that the Biewer Yorkie is the ideal dog! Happy owners of miniature dogs point to their pets' playfulness, their curiosity, calm disposition, and bright and pretty appearance. Such babies are purchased for children, as a companion for single people, as a friend for large families. Sometimes owners note that the dog becomes capricious and disobedient. But usually this is how the pet tries to attract attention or remind you of itself. The baby just needs constant communication. It is worth paying attention to the beaver - and he will immediately again become the embodiment of virtue. The dog seems to have been created to become a beloved family member!

The character of Biewer Yorkies is characterized by curiosity, a calm disposition, and a bright and pretty appearance.

Education and training

To live comfortably with a pet, it must be accustomed to order. The dog quickly understands the purpose of the tray and diaper, and grasps the most common commands: “ugh”, “sit”, “come to me”. If the Biewer fulfills requests correctly, the dog should be encouraged - given treats, praise, and petting.

The young pet feels a constant feeling of hunger. By nature, the beaver is a hunter, so when it smells food in the kitchen, it will go on the attack. It is advisable to immediately train your pet not to take food from strangers. This will save you from possible kidnapping of the dog from its owner or poisoning.

It is recommended to train the dog not to pull on the leash while walking by gently tugging towards you. The dog should move freely along the street and breathe calmly and evenly. With pressure on his neck, this is impossible.

Also, the baby should be accustomed to traveling in public transport. Yorkie must be loyal to passers-by and strangers and not bark in vain.

For fun, you can teach your pet to follow the commands: “give paw”, “turn”, “voice”.

Features of character and behavior

We can say that the Biewer has a softer character than the Yorkie, but terrier qualities and habits have their place. The dogs are playful, active and friendly. They are affectionate with people and find a common language with any animal. Pets are sociable and understanding, they have extraordinary intelligence.

The breed is suitable for any family that is ready to love their four-legged friend limitlessly, devoting all their free time to him. Terriers love attention and demand it from their household. Dogs can even mope if at a certain moment they do not receive admiring or interested glances.

Flaws

The disadvantages of the breed do not cover all the advantages:

  • Playfulness (dogs like to dig, run away, get acquainted with other pets, not paying attention to commands);

  • Intolerance of loneliness;
  • Some Yorkies, often males, are aggressive towards fellow dogs or males of other breeds and participate in fights;

Biewer care and maintenance

The Biewer Yorkie is an indoor dog. Ideal for living in an apartment (even a small one). If the dog will live in a private house, you need to control the temperature of the premises to prevent the baby from getting hypothermic. Do not keep it outside under any circumstances!

Biewer can be walked on a leash. In the cold season, for street walks you need to purchase an insulated blanket for your pet. In severe frosts, you should refrain from walking.

The baby's luxurious coat requires special care. The dog needs to be bathed weekly with a special shampoo. After bathing, you need to wrap the Biewer in towels and then dry it with a hairdryer. To avoid matting and matting, be sure to comb the coat.

You need to approach diet planning responsibly. Puppies need to be fed 5-6 times a day, adult dogs – 2-3 times. It is acceptable to feed Biewer-Yorkshire terriers both purchased specialized food and natural food. When choosing industrial food, preference should be given to brands for small dogs. If preference is given to home-cooked food, then you need to remember a few nuances:

  • regularly give boneless meat (chicken fillet, veal);
  • add sea fish to the diet, removing the bones first;
  • once a week give fermented milk products (kefir, yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese);
  • be sure to add fresh vegetables;
  • Feeding smoked meats, sweets, white bread and table scraps is prohibited;

If you follow all the recommendations for feeding and maintenance, the dog will always be healthy, playful and sociable.

How to choose a puppy?

This is a rather rare breed that is gaining popularity, therefore, in order to purchase a healthy and purebred Biewer, you should contact specialized nurseries, and not buy a dog from your own hands..

Before purchasing, you need to find out from the breeders about the character and origin of the puppy, the health and titles of the parents, inspect the premises where the dogs are kept, find out about their living conditions and nutrition.

To exclude the possibility of purchasing a puppy with the wrong color, unpigmented nose and eyelids, and light irises, you must carefully examine it and compare it with the breed standard.

In a healthy puppy:

  • cheerful look;
  • there is no fear of people;
  • rather thick paws and short hair;
  • proportional torso;
  • not bloated belly;
  • dark eyes, no discharge.

CAREFULLY!
