The Yorkshire Terrier is a long-haired dog breed. A special feature of Yorkies is their low weight (from 1.5 to 3.5 kg) and the unique structure of their coat. Dogs of this breed have long, thick hair, which makes grooming a Yorkie a rather complicated but necessary procedure.
There are several types of Yorkshire Terrier haircuts; they are selected depending on the color, length and degree of hardness of the hair. An experienced groomer will recommend haircuts and styles for your pet in accordance with its coat type and breed standards.
Hair care for an adult dog, features and nuances
The main difference between the Yorkie's coat is the fine structure of the hair and the absence of undercoat. These features allow them to avoid seasonal molting.
The basis of systematic care is regular washing and combing. Bathing is carried out once every 2 weeks at a stable air temperature of at least 25°C, water temperature 33 - 35°C. Show dogs need more frequent bathing – once every 10 days. Claw treatment is carried out as necessary, after a visual inspection.
Proper care and regular grooming of Yorkshire terriers allows you to get rid of the characteristic “dog” smell, and the absence of shedding significantly reduces the risk of allergic reactions in the owners of these dogs.
One of the problems with caring for Yorkies' coat is the frequent formation of mats. Regular grooming of your Yorkie, in addition to bathing, also includes combing out tangled lumps, haircuts, and sanitizing the groin and anal areas.
How to scratch a dog before and after the procedure
First, wash the dog and dry the coat. The first step is to untangle the tangles using a slicker brush. If the coat is poorly cared for or rarely brushed, small balls of hair remain on the coat, which cannot be untangled. Unsightly areas are removed using scissors with rounded ends.
After shearing, the cover is dried with warm air, then tidied up using a metal comb with long, sparse teeth. A thick comb cannot be used: it can damage the hairs and skin if the wet wool is pulled too hard. After grooming, you need to comb your dog carefully, dividing the body into small zones.
Types of Yorkshire Terrier haircuts
Long and thin hair (its structure is almost identical to human hair) allows Yorkie owners to add uniqueness and charm to the image of their pets. Depending on the type of coat, gender and age of your pet, its participation in shows and exhibitions, the time of year, the haircut of Yorkshire terriers is:
- Everyday . Regular (every 1.5-2 months) shortening the length of the entire hairline.
- Hygienic . This procedure is performed once every 1-1.5 months. The main goal of a hygienic haircut is to remove hair in places most susceptible to the accumulation of dirt and germs (anal and groin areas, spaces between the fingers).
- Standard or cosmetic (a type of exhibition haircut). In accordance with the international standards of the FCI (Cynological Association International) and the British Kennel Club (the oldest English kennel club in the world, engaged in the registration of purebred dog breeds), only trimming is provided for Yorkshire terriers participating in exhibitions (shortening no more than 1-2.5 cm) length of hair on the body.
- Seasonal . Depending on the time of year, a Yorkie's haircut can be summer or winter. A summer haircut is done with a clipper; on the sides and back of the dog, the hair is cut short (length no more than 1-1.5 cm), in the area of the tail and paws the hair is only trimmed. There are no specific requirements or instructions for the types of winter haircuts; the choice depends on the individual characteristics of your pet.
- Model . These haircuts are not limited by strict rules and requirements; they can be creative and imaginative, emphasizing the originality and uniqueness of the Yorkie's image. The only condition is that haircuts are modeled only for dogs that do not participate in exhibitions or shows.
Necessary tools and workplace
The desire to become a “home groomer” requires not only knowledge, but also certain costs. It is important to buy professional tools and equipment so that the work of giving the fur the desired shape and length does not turn into torture for humans and pets.
What you need to cut a Yorkie:
- a table, if possible, a professional one, for grooming. If the dog is calm enough, then an ordinary table on which a rubber mat is placed will do;
- machine for grooming. Be sure to buy a tool for dogs and attachments: from 2 to 10 mm;
- hairdressing scissors of different lengths and shapes;
- metal combs with long, sparse teeth and short, frequent teeth of medium length;
- trimmer. Device for cutting delicate areas;
- a rubberized mat to prevent your pet from slipping on the table;
- rectangular comb with metal teeth (slicker brush). The tool is needed to untangle matted fur (except for show terriers);
- nail clipper for dogs (guillotine type tool).
Types of model haircuts
Model haircuts for Yorkie boys and girls are very diverse; when choosing, you need to focus on the length and thickness of the coat.
Owners of Yorkie girls prefer to keep their pets' long hair; this allows their dogs to create beautiful hairstyles using various accessories (bows, hairpins, rhinestones). The most common and popular types of model haircuts for Yorkie girls:

"Skirt" . During the grooming process, the sides and back are cut short, the fur on the belly and tail is slightly trimmed (shortened by no more than 2 cm).
"French braid" . The fur on the body is cut short (its length should not exceed 1.5-2 cm). When cutting, a long strand is left along the back, braided into a braid. This trendy girl's Yorkie haircut goes well with a classic topknot (a beautiful ponytail with bangs adorned with a bow on top of the dog's head).
“Baby face” or puppy haircut. The fur on the body and sides is trimmed evenly short. Groomers focus on shaping the spherical shape of the Yorkie's muzzle. Long strands of hair (bangs) are left on the top of the head, which are decorated with accessories.
Korean or Asian haircut . An original beautiful haircut for a Yorkie girl, in which the dog's neck and body are cut very short, and the muzzle is given a rounded shape. Long strands are left on the ears, the hair on the paws is trimmed a little.
Creative Yorkie haircuts that imitate the appearance of other dog breeds are very popular. The most common models are “Chinese Crested”, “Chinchilla”, “Poodle”.
When cutting – imitation of the “ Chinese Crested ”, the hair on the body, paws, neck and muzzle is cut short (leaving no more than 1.5 cm in length). The hair between the ears is left untouched and subsequently formed into bangs.
The “ chinchilla ” haircut for Yorkie girls looks impressive on Yorkie Biewers. As a result, alternating volumetric stripes are obtained on the dog’s back; the most creative Yorkie owners paint them in a color reminiscent of the natural color of a chinchilla.
poodle haircut involves a pom-pom on the top of the head, a short-cropped muzzle and evenly trimmed paws. |
The main criterion for choosing the right haircut for a Yorkie boy is the hair structure. For those with hard, fluffy fur, the most suitable options are the following models:

" Kawaii " or Korean style haircut. The fur throughout the body is cut short, and the muzzle is given a rounded shape. The strong resemblance to a plush toy that arises makes this model of a boy's Yorkie haircut very fashionable and popular.
Schnauzer haircut . The Yorkshire Terrier is cut according to the Schnauzer haircut pattern, giving it a physical resemblance to this breed. In this case, the hair on the body, neck, crown, temples and cheeks is greatly shortened. On the face of the dog, a sharp beard and wedge-shaped bangs, characteristic of a schnauzer, are formed. |
Yorkshire terriers with smooth and long hair that meets breed standards are suitable for both model and exhibition haircuts. When grooming Yorkie boys, groomers try to adhere to the classic rules - strict straight lines and short-cropped body coat.
How to trim a Yorkie's ears
The ears are trimmed in an inverted V shape .
The fur should be cut short on the inside and outside. For an adult animal, the hair is cut from 1/3 of the ear, and for a puppy, from half of the ear. You should cut only in the direction of the fur.
The hair in the inner part of the ear is carefully plucked out . It is not recommended to trim them, since even a “hedgehog” in the ear will cause the accumulation of wax in the auricle.
Important! Before trimming your Yorkie's ears, apply a little talc (powder) to them - it will create an analgesic effect.
Yorkshire terrier puppy coat care
The coat of puppies is different from the coat of an adult dog. The color develops during the first year of life and may change slightly over the course of 3 years. The structure of the Yorkie's coat is identical to the structure of human hair; each hair grows from one bulb in length throughout its life.
According to breed standards, at the age of 4 - 5 months, the length of the Yorkshire Terrier's coat should be approximately equal to its height at the withers, i.e. reach floor level. The monthly increase in coat length for a puppy that meets breed standards is 15-20 mm. After 1 year of life, the growth rate slows down slightly - 8-15 mm/month.
Experienced groomers advise adhering to the following rules:
- The first grooming of Yorkshire terrier puppies is carried out at 1.5 months. It includes hygienic hair removal in the groin and anal area and sanitization of the ears and the area around the eyes.
- It is recommended to do a haircut at 4 - 4.5 months, 10 days after the main vaccination (provided that the dog does not participate in exhibition events). Machine grooming of a Yorkie puppy is carried out after it has become accustomed to other grooming procedures (bathing, combing, trimming hair with scissors, hygienic treatment in the groin and anus area). This haircut is best done after 1 year of life, when the structure of the coat is finally formed.
- During the first haircut, the duration of the procedure should not exceed 20-30 minutes, so as not to cause any discomfort to your pet. Regular bathing and brushing of puppies begins at an early age (1-1.5 months). This develops a habit in them and makes future care easier.
- Great importance is given to combing out the mats of small Yorkies. This is done daily using care products and a special comb. A slicker brush is not suitable for removing mats from Yorkies due to their lack of undercoat.
- After 5 months, before bathing, you can make oil masks for the coat. After bathing, apply a specialized hair balm. In order not to overload the coat, it is necessary to carry out only one of these procedures.
- A balanced diet is very important for the proper development of the puppy. Dryness, flaking and itching of the skin, atypical hair loss signal a lack of sodium and chlorine. The formation of crusts and plaques in the area of the ears and eyes, as well as the root part of the hair, is associated with a lack of zinc in the dog’s body.
Accessories for haircuts at home
If you decide to cut your Yorkie at home, you will need the following set:
- Table. Ideally, it should be intended only for grooming the dog. It will have to be securely fixed to it so as not to accidentally injure the animal. It is better to start such a table from the very first day the dog is born, since it needs to be taught to cut its hair from a young age.
- Spray bottle for spraying water. It may come in handy when trimming longer hair.
- Litter. So that the dog's paws do not move apart. A rubber mat will do.
- Several combs. It is not recommended to use plastic combs. They electrify the fur, which is unlikely to please the dog. It is important to choose the size of the teeth of the comb for a certain length of hair. You may need several different combs.
- Special scissors. Straight and curved, small and large. So that each of them fits a specific area of the surface being cut. You will also need thinning scissors.
- Hair clipper. Human hair is not suitable - it can complicate the haircut procedure, since the structure of human hair is different from that of a dog. There are special clippers designed only for grooming dogs. It will require several attachments of different sizes.
The dog will have to be bathed after grooming to rid it of any remaining hair.
Benefits of grooming in professional salons
Dog handlers and veterinarians often advise giving preference to grooming Yorkshire terriers in specialized grooming salons. This is explained by the difficulty of working with the long hair of Yorkies, the strict rules imposed by the breed standard and the effectiveness of the use of professional cosmetic and medicinal products. Systematic daily care for dogs of this breed is difficult at home due to the need to purchase special tools and care products.

Where to get a haircut
There are four options for organizing grooming for your dog:
- At the pet salon
- Invite a specialist to your home
- Visit a specialist at home
- Master your own Yorkie haircuts at home
Grooming a Yorkie in a salon is the safest, but also the most expensive way.
Let's take a closer look at each of the listed activities.
The common thing between haircuts done by a professional—either in a salon, at his place, or in your home—is that the person working on your Yorkie is often experienced and a certified professional.
When choosing a haircut in a salon, the owner pays not only for the service itself. This includes increased comfort, safety and guarantees.
Pet salons usually have a comfortable waiting room. All instruments undergo mandatory disinfection.
And if the master spoils the dog’s exterior with illiterate work, there is somewhere to complain.
The hair will not grow back, but the money will be returned, an apology will be made and, not always, of course, but they may provide some bonuses in order to make amends for the negligent employee as much as possible.
Of course, grooming in a salon is not a cheap service. There are more budget options, including inviting a hairdresser and cutting your Yorkie at home.
This may be a good specialist who monitors the safety and proper condition of his tools.
Grooming a Yorkie with your own hands is not a difficult task, but it requires a lot of endurance.
As for visiting a hairdresser at his home, one thing that can be inconvenient is that you have to wait for the haircut to finish in not the most comfortable conditions, sitting in the corridor on a stool.
But bringing a dog and leaving it for several hours with a stranger, while going about your business, is somehow scary for many.
The most economical option would be to organize grooming for your dog yourself.
In general, the haircut of Yorkies, as the video confirms, is not something supernatural.
If the owner is determined to master this business, he will have to shell out money once for a number of necessary tools:
- Scissors of different sizes. This includes scissors 1) with a long straight and curved blade - for decorating the sides, paws and tail; 2) small scissors with rounded ends for cutting around the ears, fingers and eyes.
- A special grooming machine, complete with different attachments. They should not be made of plastic, as this increases the operating time and degrades its quality.
Haircut is carried out on wet wool
- Trimmer for trimming the muzzle and anal area.
- Massage brush, furminator and combs of different formats. Plastic will not work here either, it electrifies the hair.
- Anti-slip mat. Those bought for the bathroom or in the trunk of a car are suitable; choose rubberized options.
- Guillotine claw cutter.
- Colt cutter.
Before grooming, the owner should wear a cotton T-shirt or robe, as synthetic fabrics electrify the fur.
You can do your little Yorkie's hair from 6-7 months.

How to trim a Yorkie at home?
There are several ways to create a hairstyle for a pet. The first option for cutting a Yorkie at home would be the following:
- Be sure to comb your pet, cut a third of the upper part of the ear on both sides and leave only five millimeters of fur.
- Lightly trim the remaining fur, make a smooth, beautiful transition from the forehead to the bridge of the nose, and cut off a triangle on it.
- Carefully and briefly trim the area under the tail with a trimmer.
- The paws must be freed from fur, leaving no more than five millimeters.
- If the rate of hair growth allows you to create a beautiful “skirt” for your dog, send your Yorkie to an exhibition, and the sooner the better!
- If you feel bad about cutting off such a large mop of beautiful dog hair, at least free your pet’s mane so that he can run around without getting tangled in it.
- If you cut it like a clipper, you will get a living plush toy.
Second way
This method of how to cut a Yorkie at home is a little more complicated in technique, so it is better to use it if you have certain skills in grooming dogs:
- Be sure to comb and trim the neck and body with a clipper from the dog’s elbow to the groin, leaving about fifteen to twenty millimeters.
- Cover the area under the tail, leaving no more than ten millimeters.
- The gap between the front and hind legs should be trimmed as short as possible, and the hair on the tail should be trimmed randomly.
- Cut off the throat, belly, square between the front paws, leaving very little hair.
- The upper part of the hind legs is cut to twenty millimeters with scissors, and the hair below is leveled to floor level.
- Trim the front paws with scissors (about twenty millimeters) to the “pads.”
- Your pet's head should be round. To maintain this shape, you need to cut your ears short inside and out. Be sure to use scissors and a comb to cut the area above the eyes, all over the head from the temples to the back of the head, from the back of the head to the back, from cheek to cheek. Leaving a triangle of short hair at the bridge of the nose will be convenient for the dog from a hygienic point of view.
- Pay attention to the chin and jaw of the Yorkshire Terrier and cut them short.
