About home care for York!

What is necessary?

If you become the owner of this charming decorative companion for the first time, then you should think about the list of necessary tools for daily grooming, since this breed requires very careful daily care.

To keep a Yorkie, regardless of whether it is a show dog or just a pet, you will need:

  • Comb – a comb with frequent rounded teeth. Ideally, it would be metal and have a comfortable handle.
  • Massage brush with a wooden handle to remove static electricity.
  • Brush with natural bristles.
  • Sprayer . The bubble should not be very large. A liquid is placed in it, which is necessary for hair care.
  • Manicure scissors with rounded edges.
  • Hairdresser's scisors.
  • Shaver.
  • Paper for curl papers and rubber bands for securing them in different sizes.
  • A robe or overalls worn with the hair wrapped in paper.
  • Elastic bands and hairpins for bangs.
  • Special care cosmetics, which include not only shampoo and conditioner, but other specialized compounds that help keep the Yorkshire Terrier's coat in good shape.

Combing

It is very important to accustom your puppy to brushing from a very tender age. The main thing is to do it right.

Puppies should be taught this procedure from a very early age. At 3 months they should already know that a comb will not harm them or scare them.

While the dog is small (up to 7-9 months), the animal is combed every day, and then gradually gets accustomed to the curlers.

It is important to strictly follow the combing rules for this breed, otherwise you can ruin the fur:

  • First, use a natural brush to comb through the fur. This is how we remove dirt and stuck small objects. When we come across tangled places, we spray them with a special compound and after 30-40 seconds we comb them again.
  • Then we change the direction and scratch against the hair growth. This is especially necessary for puppies under 5 months in order to accustom them to the process, massage the skin and remove the undercoat.
  • Then we take a metal comb and again scratch according to the height, laying it down.

After this, if the dog does not have a short haircut, is at home or on vacation, we put on curlers. When winding wool on them, do not forget to lubricate the ends with oil. Then they will not split and get tangled. It is necessary to use only special compounds. Various folk remedies can greatly damage the hair structure or even provoke a change in color.

Bathing

This is a very common procedure for decorative companions. Breeders recommend washing your little friend at least once every 7-10 days.

For swimming you will need:

  • Shampoo.
  • Air conditioner.
  • Towel.
  • Hair dryer.
  • Combs.

First you need to thoroughly wet the entire fur with running warm water. The most suitable temperature is about 25 degrees.

Then shampoo is applied. It should be carefully distributed along the entire length of the hair and there is no need to massage the skin. If the animal is very small, 3-4 months old, or prone to allergic reactions, then it is best to use baby shampoo with chamomile. After this, the composition is thoroughly washed off, and the procedure is repeated again.

After the second wash, conditioner must be applied, since without it it will be extremely difficult to comb the coat. The composition is left for a few minutes and then washed off, carefully straightening the hair and arranging it according to growth.

The next stage is drying with a towel and hairdryer. You cannot comb your dog before it dries; this causes the hair to become very stretched and deteriorate.

After completing the entire procedure, if the animal has already reached the required age, curlers are screwed onto it and a special jumpsuit made of natural silk is put on.

Care

Grooming - comprehensive care for the Yorkshire Terrier. It includes:

  • coat care;
  • bathing;
  • nail trimming;
  • care for ears, eyes and mouth;
  • pre-show care.

Long hair on pets requires more care than short hair. It gets dirty faster and becomes clogged with dead hair. It is combed once every 3-5 days, more often if necessary.

Yorkies' paws are similar to those of a cat. Their specificity is the fur between the pads. It is carefully cut out once every two weeks.

Bathing

Your Yorkie should wash his paws after every walk. Bath completely - once every 10 days using special or baby shampoo. Before the procedure, you can drop drops into your eyes to reduce irritation of the mucous membrane. Still, they try to prevent water from getting into their eyes.

Wash the dog in the bathtub or sink, sitting on a rubber mat. The ears are covered with cotton swabs.

Mix the shampoo with water and gently wash the coat twice. Finally, treat with conditioner - rinse aid. This will make it especially shiny and soft.

The wool is lightly wrung out with your hands, the Yorkie is allowed to shake itself off and wrapped in a soft towel. You can dry it with a hairdryer (warm air).

Eyes

They must be washed daily. They do this with a special lotion. When the animal is in the mood to communicate, it is sat on your lap and each eye is wiped with a cotton pad soaked in lotion. Move from the outer corner to the inner one. There is a separate disc for each eye. It is not advisable to rinse with tea leaves or chamomile decoction.

If your pet has a short nose, you can trim the hair on the bridge of the nose and between the eyes to prevent irritation.

Oral cavity

Teeth brushing is carried out regularly from about 4 months, when baby teeth are replaced by molars. Special accessories are purchased at a pet store. Regular human toothpaste is not used. It contains substances that are harmful to your Yorkie's health.

They act delicately and carefully. Hold the muzzle with one hand and clean with the other. It is good if a family member holds the pet in a sitting position.

Ears

If the animal scratches them, this is a signal for cleaning. The inner surface of the outer ear is wiped with a cotton pad soaked in a special lotion. Then wipe dry with a paper napkin. The sulfur is removed with a cotton swab. Do this after each bath, but at least once a week.

To make ear care easier, experts advise plucking hair from the ear canal. This should be done with fingers treated with powder (it is both an antiseptic and an anesthetic).

Twice a week, the tips of the ears are relieved of fur. To do this, it is carefully cut off from the upper third. It is better to do this with a hair clipper.

Claws

They only trim them if they don’t wear off during walks. It is important not to trim too much - to the “live” part. The procedure is carried out with special nail clippers, nippers, a file, and children's scissors. Trim the claws no more than 1 mm at a time. Repeat the procedure once every two weeks.

Haircuts

Yorkie fur requires special care. If you don't comb it, it will get into tangles, which will harden over time.

It is advisable to visit a professional groomer for the first time when the puppy is three months old. Approximately two weeks after vaccinations. The groomer will perform a hygienic haircut and give recommendations on home care for the puppy. At 7-8 months, your Yorkie can already be cut with a clipper. The frequency of haircuts depends on the rate of hair growth. On average, it is needed once every 1.5-2 months.

Haircuts are:

  • hygienic. The dog is combed, the hair in the groin and on the upper third of the ears is trimmed, and the hair is plucked from the ear canal. Lightly trim the hair on the paws, bangs and beard, leaving the basic shape;
  • standard (classical);
  • model;
  • clipper haircut. It is justified only in case of serious problems with the coat.

The choice of model haircut depends on the properties of the Yorkie's coat. For a fluffy, soft hair that easily tangles and becomes electrified, the options for a Korean or “puppy” haircut are suitable. “Long” models are contraindicated. For tough haircuts, medium length haircuts are suitable. Too short ones will create a “bald” look, and long hair will split and break. All types of haircuts are suitable for long standard silky coats.

A standard hairstyle is required only for purebred animals before the exhibition. It must meet special requirements: the coat is cut short on the rump, groin, armpits and at the tips of the ears. It is left long on the body.

A haircut

The first time scissors touch a small Yorkie is already 2 weeks old, when the ears are first processed. A little later, the groin area is also treated.

At the age of 4 months, the puppy already needs a full hygienic haircut of the muzzle, paws, belly, groin and ears. It is best if it is carried out by a professional for the first time.

From the age of 6 months you can have model haircuts.

Exhibition animals most often get by with hygiene procedures, since wool is their wealth, while on vacation or as a regular pet, Yorkies can even wear a very short hairstyle to make it easier for owners to care for it.

We cut the hair correctly

The Yorkshire Terrier can be given a standard or model haircut. A hygienic haircut is required.

Hygienic haircuts should be regular - every two weeks. If you are going to do this dog grooming yourself at home, then be sure to wear a cotton robe so as not to electrify the hairs.

When performing a hygiene procedure, you need to trim the hair in the following places: around the eyes, in the groin area, armpits, anus, between the toes. You can use small scissors with rounded tips or a trimmer.

The ears are trimmed using blunt-tipped scissors or a clipper. It is necessary to divide each ear into three parts and cut off excess hair from the top part. The result should be a pronounced triangle shape. The rest of the hair is evenly distributed using a comb on both sides of the ear.

The fur inside the ears should be plucked or trimmed using a trimmer.

A standard haircut is done if you are preparing a Yorkshire terrier for exhibitions. After thorough combing, you need to make an edging using thinning scissors.

If you are not confident in your abilities, then the best option would be to trim your pet yourself at home, during breaks between shows. And just before an important event, go to a special dog grooming salon.

If you purchased a Yorkshire Terrier as a pet, then you can give him any fashionable haircut. In this case, it all depends on your imagination.

You can use a model haircut to imitate a dog of another breed. For example, cut your pet's hair like a Chinese Crested. During the hot season, you can give your pet a short haircut. For lovers of sophistication, a French braid haircut is suitable. The coat of a Yorkshire Terrier boy can be shaped like “pants”, and a girl’s coat can be shaped like a “skirt”.

A stylish, well-chosen haircut for a Yorkshire Terrier dog should emphasize the dog’s advantages and also express your individuality.

But for any pet haircut there is one main rule - never cut a representative of this breed bald. After such an extreme procedure, the dog's fur will grow extremely slowly, and the animal itself will look pitiful. This haircut can be done only in one case - if the baby has not been properly cared for for a long time, and his fur has become too matted.
