When communism came to China, they began to believe that it was the capitalists who kept the dogs. The breed was on the verge of destruction. What saved her was that many of the livestock lived in the mountains, where the authorities did not have much influence. The breed has also survived because it is a working breed.

In the 20th century by the end of the 80s. The Chinese came to their senses and set a course for preserving national dog breeds. The breed was actively restored for 10 years. In 2003, there was an outbreak of SARS, a respiratory disease, and many dogs were eliminated. Now in China there are less than 2 thousand animals. The breed is considered to be in a critical situation.

The Chinese hope that they will be able to restore and make the Chongqing population numerous. Four organizations have been created to protect these beautiful dogs. The breed is not yet recognized by reputable clubs, but the Chongqing Dog Conservation Center and other organizations are fighting for its conservation.
