Mechanism of action
Milprazone belongs to the group of anthelmintic drugs. The tablets are effective in the treatment of nematodes and cestodes in dogs and puppies. Praziquantel and milbemycin contained in the composition destroy not only adult worms, but also their intermediate forms. These substances have a wide range of anthelmintic effects against parasites in the intestines, liver and other organs. They increase the permeability of cell membranes in muscle tissue and cause paralysis and then death of worms. Praziquantel destroys the tegument, or outer covering, of the worms and leaves them defenseless. Milbemycin oxime increases the permeability of the cell membrane in the body of worms and makes tissues accessible to ionized chlorine. This leads to damage to the nervous and muscular systems of helminths and to their rapid death.
Absorption of Milprazone occurs within 2, sometimes 4 hours after taking a therapeutic dose. The binding of the drug to blood and plasma reaches 80%, the drug is excreted within 48 hours in the urine.

Release form and composition

Instructions

How to calculate dosage
The amount of praziquantel (5 mg) and milbemecim oxime (0.5 mg) for effective control of worms in a dog is calculated per 1 kg of dog’s body weight. Depending on the weight of the animal, the norm ranges from one to three tablets.
Dog's body weight and number of anthelmintic units:
- from 5 to 25 kg – it is enough to give 1 tablet;
- from 25 to 50 kg – the norm is more: 2 tablets;
- from 50 to 75 kg – the animal receives 3 tablets.
Frequency of application
The new generation drug has a prolonged effect; a single use at the recommended dose is sufficient for the anthelmintic effect to occur. Do not increase the number of tablets: adverse reactions are possible.
To prevent dirofilariasis, it is important to use the agtihelmigtic Milprazone before the mosquitoes begin to fly. Before carrying out the course, it is important to make sure that there are no microfilariae in the pet’s blood. The dog receives Milprazone for the first time at the beginning of the spring-autumn season, then once a month until active reproduction of mosquitoes stops. To maintain the preventive effect, the last dose of the tablet is needed a month after the end of the season.
If children often come into contact with a dog, then after consulting a veterinarian, preventive deworming can be carried out every two months to reduce the risk of helminthiasis infection. The standard frequency of taking anthelmintic drugs is once every 90 days.
Preparing to take the pill

Pharmacological (biological) properties and effects

The active components included in the drug provide its wide spectrum of anthelmintic action.
Milbemycin oxime
- a macrocyclic lactone obtained as a result of the enzymatic activity of Streptomyces hygroscopicus var.
Aureolacrimosus, is active against
larvae and adults of nematodes parasitizing the gastrointestinal tract of dogs, as well as larvae of the nematode Dirofilaria immitis.
The mechanism of action of milbemycin is due to an increase in the permeability of cell membranes to chlorine ions (Cl-), which leads to overpolarization of the membranes of nerve and muscle tissue cells, paralysis and death of the parasite. The maximum concentration of milbemycin oxime in the blood plasma of dogs is achieved within 2-4 hours, bioavailability is about 80%. The compound is excreted from the body mainly unchanged.
Praziquantel
is an acylated derivative of pyrazinisoquinoline, has a pronounced effect against cestodes and nematodes. By increasing the permeability of the parasite's cell membranes to calcium ions (Ca2+), it causes depolarization of the membranes, muscle contraction and destruction of the tegument, which leads to the death of the parasite and promotes its elimination from the animal's body. The maximum concentration of praziquantel in the blood plasma of dogs is achieved after 1-4 hours. The compound undergoes rapid and almost complete biotransformation in the liver. The level of binding in plasma is about 80%, and is excreted from the body within 2 days, mainly in the urine.
Milprazone® tablets for dogs, in terms of the degree of impact on the body, are classified as low-hazard substances (hazard class 4 according to GOST 12.1.007-76), in recommended doses they do not have sensitizing, embryotoxic or teratogenic effects, and are well tolerated by dogs of different breeds and ages. The drug is toxic to bees, as well as fish and other aquatic organisms.
Indications for use of the drug MILPRAZONE® TABLETS FOR DOGS
For therapeutic and prophylactic purposes for diseases caused by cestodes - Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinococcus spp., Mesocestoides spp. and nematodes - Ancylostoma caninum, Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Trichuris vulpis, Thelazia callipaeda; Angiostrongylus vasorum (reduces the intensity of infection), Crenosoma vulpis (reduces the intensity of infection), Dirofilaria immitis (prevention of the disease), incl. at:
— nematodes;
- cestodiasis;
— combined nematodo-cestodal infestations.
Application procedure
The drug is used for dogs
once during feeding with a small amount of food or administered forcibly to the root of the tongue after feeding in a minimum therapeutic dose of 0.5 mg of milbemycin oxime and 5 mg of praziquantel per 1 kg of animal weight, based on:

A preliminary starvation diet and the use of laxatives before deworming are not required.
To deworm dogs with infestation caused by Angiostrongylus vasorum, Milprazone® tablets for dogs are used for therapeutic purposes four times with an interval of 7 days, for prophylactic purposes - every 4 weeks at a therapeutic dose.
To deworm dogs with infestation caused by Thelazia callipaeda, the drug is used twice with an interval of 7 days.
In order to prevent dirofilariasis in regions unfavorable for the disease, the drug is used in the spring-summer-autumn period: before the start of summer against mosquitoes and mosquitoes (carriers of the pathogen D. immitis) once, then once a month and the last time in the season 1 month after the end of summer insects Before deworming, you should consult a veterinarian to rule out the presence of microfilariae in the animal’s blood.
No specific effects of the drug upon its first use and discontinuation were identified.
When carrying out deworming, you should adhere to the time limits recommended by the instructions. If the next treatment is missed, the use of the drug is resumed at the same dose and according to the same regimen.
Side effects
As a rule, there are no side effects or complications when using the drug according to the instructions. Some animals may experience lethargy, ataxia, muscle tremors, vomiting and/or diarrhea; in these cases, the use of the drug is stopped and the animal is prescribed symptomatic therapy.
In case of an overdose of the drug, some dogs may experience depression, drooling, muscle paresis, trembling and/or an unsteady gait. These symptoms disappear spontaneously within 24 hours; if necessary, the animal is prescribed symptomatic therapy.
Contraindications to the use of the drug MILPRAZONE®TABLETS FOR DOGS
— individual hypersensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug (including in history);
- severe renal dysfunction;
- severe liver dysfunction.
The drug should not be used in puppies younger than 2 weeks of age and weighing less than 0.5 kg.
Animals that are exhausted or sick with infectious diseases are not subject to deworming.
Deworming of pregnant and lactating bitches, collie, bobtail and sheltie puppies, if necessary, is carried out under the supervision of a veterinarian.
Special instructions and personal preventive measures
Milprazone® tablets for dogs are compatible with selamectin; there is no information on the compatibility of the drug with other macrocyclic lactones.
The drug is not intended for use in productive animals.
Personal prevention measures
When working with Milprazone® tablets for dogs, you must follow the general rules of personal hygiene and safety precautions provided for when working with medications.
In case of accidental contact of the drug with the skin or mucous membranes of the eyes, they must be rinsed with plenty of running water. People with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug should avoid direct contact with Milprasone tablets for dogs. If allergic reactions occur or if the drug accidentally enters the human body, you should immediately contact a medical facility (bring with you the instructions for use of the drug or the label).
Empty medicinal product packaging must not be used for household purposes; it must be disposed of with household waste.
Storage conditions and periods
The drug should be stored in the manufacturer's sealed packaging, separate from food and feed, in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight, out of reach of children, at a temperature of 5°C to 25°C. The shelf life of the medicinal product, subject to storage conditions in the manufacturer's closed packaging, is 2 years from the date of production. Do not use the drug after its expiration date.
Unused drug is disposed of in accordance with legal requirements.
Possible side effects and what to do if they occur
The good tolerance of the anthelmintic drug Milprazone has been confirmed by dog owners and veterinarians. Negative reactions in most cases occur after deworming without taking into account restrictions or against the background of an overdose. Possible drowsiness, drooling, lethargy, unsteady gait, muscle tremors.
What to do? If negative manifestations do not disappear within 24 hours, then you need to visit a veterinary clinic to prescribe symptomatic therapy. You cannot independently decide on the selection of other drugs or the use of sorbents: you can increase the negative manifestations or reduce the effectiveness of the anthelmintic drug.
Contraindications and side effects
The drug has a minimum of contraindications. It can be used to treat pregnant and lactating females, elderly and weakened animals.
Contraindications may be:
- age of puppies (up to 2 weeks);
- individual allergic reaction to the components of the drug.
In case of overdose, diarrhea, nausea, and general depression are possible. Unpleasant symptoms disappear completely after a few days and do not require additional treatment. For muscle tremors or convulsions, take symptomatic therapy.
