List of potentially dangerous dog breeds according to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2021

A dog's aggressiveness largely depends on upbringing and training. A good owner tries to avoid situations where it could harm a person. Some studies have shown that people are sometimes attacked by breeds that everyone considers harmless. This applies to Labradors, Dalmatians, etc. This rating is top 10 most dangerous dog breeds in the world, compiled not by the number of attacks of a certain breed, but by the physical harm they can cause to a person.

10.Dogo Canario

  • Origin of the breed:
    Spain
  • Height (cm):
    56-68
  • Weight, kg):
    45-60

They have long been used as shepherds and guards. Their menacing appearance in itself is capable of scaring away a person who has evil plans. Their character is very calm, even phlegmatic, and they cannot be considered one of the most evil dog breeds in the world .
But if the Great Dane senses danger to the owner or the protected area, he is capable of attacking with sufficient force and aggression. Strangers are treated with suspicion, just like other dogs. There are two widely known cases in the United States in which these dogs attacked their owners with fatal results.

List of potentially dangerous breeds

The list of dog breeds that can be dangerous to people was proposed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in March 2021 and submitted for public consideration; initially it united 69 dog breeds. The publication of the list led to active discussion and criticism, which resulted in a significant reduction in the list: ten dog breeds remained in it, as well as wolf-dog hybrids and mestizos of the breeds listed on the list.

A wide public discussion with the participation of the Russian Canine Federation lasted until June 12, 2021, including on the federal portal of draft regulatory legal acts. As Vladimir Burmatov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Ecology and Environmental Protection, said, the list initially announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs was too expanded and even inflated - similar documents valid in other countries contain no more than one and a half dozen items.

The approved list is published on the official website of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Russian Federation - government.ru. The regulation comes into force from the beginning of 2021 throughout Russia.

These are dogs that have genetically determined qualities of aggression and strength and pose a potential danger to the life and health of people, dogs used for bullying, and dogs of aboriginal breeds in which selection for loyalty to humans was not carried out, and the characteristics of their behavior are not fully studied.

Akbash

Akbash is a herding breed of Turkish origin. Since by the nature of their “service” these dogs are called upon to make independent and often tough decisions, it is not easy to interact with such a pet - you need to understand its psychology well.

The Akbash is a guard breed that has spent a lot of time outdoors for many centuries.

An unambiguous leader by nature, the Akbash needs constant confirmation of the owner’s authority, and does not recognize it once and for all, like many other breeds. You will have to remind yourself who is boss in the house before each lesson if you want it to be effective. It is necessary to begin socialization and education very early, basic obedience skills must be consolidated before the age of six months - then it will be much more difficult. During adolescence, the dog will defend its right to dominance with all its might; It is better to limit Akbash’s communication with children at this time.

In an adult, well-trained dog, the behavior stabilizes, he becomes balanced and predictable, performs excellent security functions and gets along with children.

American Bandog

The American Bandog is a guard dog common on the North American continent, but this breed was originally bred specifically for dog fighting. The following breeds participated in the selection of the gladiator dog:

  • amstaff;
  • ampitbull;
  • mastino neapoletano.

To this day, breeders are creating new breed types, adding blood from other breeds to the “Bandoggy”, consolidating and improving the desired qualities of the offspring.

American Bandog - the name of the breed literally translates from English as “chain dog”

The “Chain Dog” is distinguished by its massiveness, power, activity and purposeful fearlessness. The combination of such properties in one pet allows only experienced and strong-willed people to keep it. Considering the instability of the breed, it is advisable to find out as much as possible about the heredity of the puppy being purchased, the characteristics of the upbringing and behavior of its parents. This will provide a lot of valuable information in order to properly organize the training system. The American Bandog needs to be raised throughout its life.

The breed is banned in Romania and Norway.

Ambuldog

The American Bulldog is an athlete, watchdog and hunter, a direct descendant of the famous Old English Bulldog. The powerful build does not prevent the dog from being very energetic and developing great speed in short areas. The breed in some European countries continues to be used as a hunting breed - they go with it to hunt large animals.

The Ambuldog is very popular as a working dog or simply as a family friend.

The dog's watchdog qualities are pronounced, but the ambul can be very aggressive towards other dogs of its sex, and not towards people. For the most part, representatives of the breed are friendly, affectionate and quite manageable - of course, subject to proper upbringing.

They have high intelligence and are highly trainable, but the trainer will have to overcome the bulldog’s “trademark” stubbornness, for which the bulldog is accused of all dog sins.

Brazilian Bulldog

The Brazilian Bulldog, or Campeiro Bulldog, is a once very popular breed among farmers in Brazil, but is now on the verge of extinction, a breed bred from the blood of the Old English Bulldog.

The fact is that the dog was bred for a narrow specialization: it had to pacify the herd in grazing and in the slaughterhouse. The demand for campeiro immediately fell as soon as the law prohibited the use of dogs for such a function. The breed remains rare, and the process of its revival is slow.

The Brazilian Bulldog is a courageous, loyal, strong and quiet dog.

There is exactly as much philosophical calm in this dog as there is an indomitable fighting spirit - it is better not to awaken the beast in the campeiro. Raising a puppy should begin as early as possible and continue systematically, without putting forceful pressure on the dog. The Brazilian bulldog is smart, it is quite possible to come to an agreement with him - he willingly adapts to the way of life and habits of his human pack and is very responsible in protecting his master's interests.

Bully kutta

The Bully Kutta, or Pakistani Mastiff, is a very large breed used for fighting and guarding. Translated from the Pakistani Punjabi dialect, "bully kutta" means "heavily wrinkled dog", although there are many breeds with much more wrinkled skin.

Representatives of the breed began to appear on Russian territory quite recently, and so far they are brought exclusively for dog fighting. I would like to hope that a more worthy use will be found for this interesting dog.

Bully Cutta is a very rare breed and not suitable for inexperienced owners.

An excellent watchman and bodyguard - vigilant, selfless and reliable. It will not tolerate familiarity and rough physical influence; for success in education, the authority of the owner and trainer is much more important. Behind the ferocious appearance of the Bully Cutta lies a sensitive, emotional nature - the dog urgently needs communication with a person, his attention and love.

Bulldog Otto

The Alapaha Bulldog is a farm guard breed, an attempt to revive the image of the so-called plantation dog, once very popular in America. As a result, a new breed was developed that amazes with its performance, endurance and devotion to its owner.

One of the rarest breeds - there are currently no more than two hundred Otto bulldogs in the world, almost all of them live in the USA or Canada.

Purebred Alapaha Bulldog (Otto) - the appearance of this powerful dog is devoid of the pretentiousness inherent in bulldogs

A freedom-loving animal with a pronounced territorial psychology. Apartment maintenance gives rise to apathy in Otto, and a booth with a chain leads to aggression. It is very important for him to feel like a master in a particular territory, to patrol and protect it. The character of this dog surprisingly combines obedience and stubbornness, sociability and ferocity. In strong and experienced hands, the alpine becomes a faithful companion, ready to protect its owner even at the cost of its own life.

Bandog

The Bandog is a rare and fairly young breed of American selection that combines the blood of the Dogue de Bordeaux and the American Staffordshire Terrier. One of many experiments by North American dog handlers to breed a super dog: a brave watchman and fighter with an impressive appearance and good handling. The bonuses are stamina, good health and ease of maintenance.

The original “explosive” cross was intended to combine the best parental qualities in the new breed: the power of Bordeaux and the indomitability of Amstaff. The blood of the pit bull and bullmastiff was also added to the original breeds.

Bandog is an experimental breed, powerful, massive and muscular

The breed has experimental status, and in litters there may be various genetic splits with dominance of the qualities of one of the original breeds. This creates certain difficulties in training. Therefore, an inexperienced owner should not get such a dog, much less breed his own mixed breed according to a well-known scheme.

In several American states it is not legal to own a Bandog dog.

Wolf-dog hybrids

This position in the list is not very clear. Crosses of closely related species—a wild wolf and a domestic dog—are quite common. They arise both naturally and by human design - in this case, the wolf most often hybridizes with the German shepherd. On this basis, for example, the following well-known breeds were created:

  • Saarloos wolfdog (Netherlands);
  • Kunming Shepherd (China);
  • Czechoslovakian Wolfdog (formerly Czechoslovakia).

Wolf dogs have the exterior of a wolf and the character of a domestic dog - but, alas, it happens the other way around

The purpose of hybridization is to create a breed that combines the obedience and intelligence of a dog with the best qualities of a wild animal: intuitiveness, endurance, good health. Such a mix does not always turn out to be successful, and the offspring in most cases lack stability and predictability, especially with regard to approaches to education.

A ban on keeping wolf hybrids has been introduced in some US states, and specifically on the Czech wolfdog - in Switzerland.

Gul dong

Gul Dong (in the list of the Ministry of Internal Affairs the breed is listed as “Gul Dog”), or Pakistani bulldog, is a little-known breed of dog in our country, reliable information about which is practically absent. Presumably the result of crossing two breeds of local origin: the Bully Cutta and the Ghoul Terrier.

The breed was selected mainly from the blood of English breeds that were brought to Pakistan during the colonial period: the Old English Bulldog and Bull Terrier. In order for the offspring of the Foggy Albion dogs to better withstand the Asian heat, they were bred with aboriginal dogs.

The Gul Dong is a medium-sized dog, larger than the Ghoul Terrier, but more compact than the Bully Kutta.

In its homeland, gul dong is used mainly in dog fights - a favorite pastime of local men. And also representatives of this mysterious and unrecognized breed by the canine community guard a person’s home and help him hunt large animals.

Pitbullmastiff

Apparently the Pit Bull Mastiff is a cross between a Pit Bull Terrier and one of the Mastiff breeds - presumably the Mastino Napoletano. This is one of many dangerous experiments to create a “dog monster”. Since the breed is not recognized by any cynological organization in the world, it can be considered non-existent, and dogs with this name can be considered mestizos.

The negative side of crossbreeding of any animal breed is the unpredictability of the offspring, both in terms of exterior and behavioral characteristics.

Pit bull mastiff - another attempt to breed the “Hound of the Baskervilles”

North Caucasian dog

For some reason, the compilers of the list call the North Caucasian dog the Caucasian Shepherd Dog - an aboriginal domestic breed, an excellent watchman and shepherd. The breed was formed in the Caucasus region and consists of several intra-breed types that differ significantly in appearance. This is the main reason why this wonderful breed is still not recognized by the FCI.

The North Caucasian dog is the well-known Caucasian Shepherd Dog

A very large, strong and independent dog. The character is strong-willed and independent, with a clear desire for dominance, especially in males. Caucasians are territorial dogs, they can show aggression towards strangers and even towards family members whom the dog considers lower than itself in the hierarchy of the pack it has built. Therefore, it is important to raise your pet in such a way that it recognizes itself as the youngest member of the family - this requires the trainer to have experience in working with the breed.

Restrictions on the import and maintenance of Caucasian Shepherd dogs have been introduced in Italy and Denmark.

9.German Shepherd

  • Origin of the breed:
    Germany
  • Height (cm):
    54-67
  • Weight, kg):
    23-45

This breed is known to almost everyone and is used for a number of tasks: security, patrolling, as shepherds, etc. It ranks third among all dogs in terms of intelligence in Stanley Coren's ranking. A distinctive feature of the German Shepherd is its ability to accept different people as its owner. This is very convenient during military service, but can cause problems at home. Good trainability allows these dogs to be actively involved in films. They are best known for their roles in the film K-9: Dog Job and the TV series Rex.

Rottweiler

In second place is the Rottweiler, which is also popular and is in about the same price range as the German Shepherd. This dog was used not only as a guard or herding dog, but also for fighting.

A cunning, strong and resilient dog can show aggression towards other four-legged animals, towards people, even towards its owner.

8. Chow-chow

  • Origin of the breed:
    China
  • Height (cm):
    45-55
  • Weight, kg):
    19-33

Chow Chow is considered one of the oldest and is one of the ten most dangerous dog breeds in the world. In China, these animals have been known for more than 2000 years. Their main purpose was security; they have a very strong sense of ownership, so they treat their owners well. Strangers may be very surprised at how a dog that seems so cute reacts to them. Their character is calm, they look slightly detached from what is happening. The owner must carefully ensure that unfamiliar people do not actively try to pet or play with the dog. This is fraught with unpleasant situations. According to Koren's rating, chow chows occupy 77th place out of 80. But this indicator does not indicate their stupidity. They just don’t like repeating the same action and during training they avoid work in every possible way.

7.Doberman

  • Origin of the breed:
    Germany
  • Height (cm):
    61-72
  • Weight, kg):
    27-45

The first Dobermans were distinguished by a rather ferocious character, as they were bred for protection. Subsequently, breeders realized that this trait greatly hindered the wide distribution of the breed. Therefore, the task of their selection was to preserve their service qualities and develop a calmer character. Today these are moderately excitable dogs. Evil individuals appear only as a result of genetic abnormalities or improper upbringing. Breeders try to exclude such specimens from selection. Dobermans, especially males, love to fight with other dogs. So you should be careful when walking with them.

Alabai

The Central Asian Shepherd Dog (Alabai) is a breed that is more than 4 thousand years old. Its ancestors are herding dogs, Mesopotamian war dogs and Tibetan mastiffs. Alabai guarded caravans and nomadic dwellings. Strict demands were made on animals; cowardly, weak and aggressive ones were destroyed. As a result, the breed developed a balanced, fearless character, supported by high diligence, endurance and courage.

Fact! In Turkmenistan, the breed is considered a national treasure and is called the “Turkmen wolfhound”. Taking a dog out of the country is punishable by law.

A properly raised Alabai does not cause problems for its owner, it behaves calmly and non-aggressively. Training should be carried out by an experienced dog handler, because gaps in education make the animal uncontrollable and unpredictable, especially considering its high security and protective qualities.

When choosing a pet, intrabreed differences are taken into account. Dogs grow to at least 70 cm at the withers, weigh 50 kg and above, females are smaller - from 65 cm, weigh at least 40 kg. Girls are more obedient and pliable, but cunning, and sense danger from a distance better than males. They need affection and human attention. Boys are more independent, angrier, and strive to dominate relationships with their master. There will be no friendship in a pack consisting of only males.

6. Caucasian Shepherd

  • Origin of the breed:
    Russia
  • Height (cm):
    63-78
  • Weight, kg):
    40-90

How dangerous this dog is to humans can be judged just by looking at its size. It is for this reason that “Caucasians” are in the ranking of the most dangerous dog breeds for humans in the world. The height of an adult reaches 78 cm and weighs about 90 kg. They get along well with children, but it is advisable not to leave them unattended with them due to the size and strength of the dog. Smaller animals can also be comfortable being around them, especially if they have known each other since childhood. But the shepherd dog tries to immediately put large dogs in their place. This breed is very good at determining whether the owner or the protected object is in danger. The response in such cases should be immediate.

5. Siberian Husky

  • Origin of the breed:
    Russia
  • Height (cm):
    50-60
  • Weight, kg):
    14-29

This breed is not suitable for shepherding or guard duty. For a long time they were used exclusively as traction force. When there was no snow, they were most often released to feed themselves. Therefore, they have a very highly developed hunting instinct. They can attack cats, chickens and other living creatures. In addition, they need constant physical activity in large volumes.

The dog is very friendly and, unlike service breeds, practically does not show aggression. Attempts to teach huskies to attack people usually lead to mental disturbances and make them potentially dangerous. Adding to the problem is that huskies love to leave their territory. They can learn to climb over fences, open doors, break windows, etc.

Husky

Huskies, with all their apparent friendliness, take 4th place. These are fashionable and very expensive dogs that are bought from kennels and breeders; they are charming and loving. But again, they can attack a person with all their aggression, especially if he invaded their territory, behaved aggressively towards the owner, or in some other way brought them out of their usual state of love and balance.

4.German boxer

  • Origin of the breed:
    Germany
  • Height (cm):
    52-63
  • Weight, kg):
    25-30

The progenitors of this breed were used in baiting animals, holding them in place until the hunters arrived. Subsequently, the breed began to be developed with the expectation of conducting a security service. Today they are very kind and playful dogs. They have a stable character and can be safely left with children. Boxers are highly trainable, loyal to their owner, and suspicious of strangers. These qualities allow them to be used as guides for the blind. But if a dog loses its temper due to improper training, its jaw, which is capable of holding large animals in place, poses a great danger.

3.English bull terrier

  • Origin of the breed:
    Great Britain
  • Height (cm):
    40-55
  • Weight, kg):
    20-35

The third place in the ranking - the top 10 most dangerous dog breeds in the world is occupied by the Bull Terrier. This breed appeared as a result of a mixture of bulldogs, terriers and Dalmatians. The purpose of selection was to obtain a dog with a beautiful appearance, good intelligence and muscles. Some breeders did not take them seriously, believing that a fighting dog could not be beautiful. This dispute was resolved by a fight in which the bull terrier defeated the bulldog. This dog is a real fighter. She needs regular physical activity, a lot of attention, love and affection. Otherwise, aggressiveness and anger will develop in her. Which, combined with her death grip and strong muscles, will make her very dangerous. They do not get along well with animals, including other dogs.

5. Wolfdog

Many dog lovers strive to have a pet that resembles a real wolf in appearance and habits. It is considered honorable, and its owner is usually respected by other dog owners. In fact, a hybrid of a wolf and a dog was specially bred for service in the police and on the border. Breeders sought to create an animal with the sense of smell as well as the intelligence of a wolf and the loyalty of a dog. The experiments were successful; today at least seven separate breeds of wolf-dogs are known. However, no one can guarantee what percentage of a wolf and what percentage of a dog will be in a single individual. Because of this, wolfdogs are not recommended for families with small children or small animals, since such a pet can suddenly show strong aggression, which makes the breed one of the most dangerous in the world.

2. Rottweiler

  • Origin of the breed:
    Germany
  • Height (cm):
    55-69
  • Weight, kg):
    41-50

Dogs of this breed can become a reliable friend and guard. But for this they need to be properly raised and trained. Even a tense atmosphere in the family can lead to increased aggression in them. Laziness combined with intelligence makes the process of training them a little difficult. They get along well with children and other dogs if raised together. But due to their large size, it is better not to leave them alone. Rottweilers should only be adopted at a young age, otherwise the habituation process can be problematic. It is failure to follow the rules when handling these dogs that leads to cases of attacks by them.

6th place: Doberman

This is a relatively young breed, officially registered in 1880. Her removal was carried out by a German policeman named Friedrich Dobermann, who served as a tax and rent collector. To create the ideal guard dog, he used Rottweilers, Bosserons, Pinschers and some hunting dogs.

The Doberman is a strong, muscular animal, whose height varies between 63-72 cm and weight is 32-45 kg. The graceful head, resembling a blunt wedge, has expressive oval eyes and high-set, often cropped, ears. Under a harmoniously developed body with a flat topline and convex ribs are long straight limbs with curved fingers and short claws. The entire body of this dog is covered with shiny, smooth hair of black or brown color with reddish tan.

The Doberman is also recognized as one of the most dangerous dogs. He is endowed with a very peculiar character. It intricately combines sentimentality and aggression, vigilance and playfulness. He is very impatient, temperamental and ready to attack at any moment.

1.American Pit Bull Terrier

  • Origin of breed:
    USA
  • Height (cm):
    43-49
  • Weight, kg):
    20-30

The most dangerous dog breed in the world is the American Pit Bull Terrier. Dogs of this breed are prohibited in some countries. Even the name reflects its past. "Pit" refers to the fighting pits where dogs were forced to fight. The fate of the breed was in question after the ban on dog fighting. Therefore, breeders have made every effort to soften their character. But using pit bulls in areas where they will direct aggression towards humans is highly discouraged. Such a dog will eventually become dangerous to others. In other cases, pit bulls listen well to humans and learn quickly due to a combination of good intelligence and curiosity. The general dislike of this breed arose due to the media campaign after the ban on dog fighting, when any attack was widely reported.

Which breeds are included in the list of the most dangerous dogs abroad?

Let us repeat - there is no single list of “The Most Dangerous Dogs in the World”. Each country has its own ratings and sets of rules according to which a particular breed is included in these lists. We decided to take as a basis the rules for keeping dogs in several countries, namely the clauses prohibiting the keeping and breeding of dogs of a certain type and the rules for walking in public places.

USA and Canada

In these countries there is no nationwide ban or restrictions on keeping certain breeds of dogs. Such regulations are adopted at the municipal level.

Rules for keeping and walking such pets may differ in different countries. For example, in Ireland, such dogs are allowed to be walked by persons over 16 years of age, who can control the dog strictly on a short leash (up to 2 meters) and with a secure muzzle.

Each animal must have a collar with an identification tag showing the owner's name and address. For violation of these Rules, a fine may be issued, the dog may be confiscated or destroyed, and the owner may be sent to prison.

And in the UK, breeds included in the list of the most dangerous dogs for humans must appear in public places only on a leash and muzzle, be sterilized, be branded and microchipped, be insured and registered.

4. Husky

Huskies, like Alaskan Malamutes, were bred for sled dogs. Their history goes deep into the past. They have a very quiet disposition, make virtually no noise, and almost never bark. Their loving nature can play a cruel joke on the owner - the dog is not intended for protection and can meet an intruder as his best friend. But this does not mean that the breed cannot be dangerous.
