We invite you to learn more about the signs and superstitions associated with this wise pet.

Historical facts

The Egyptians worshiped black cats; they considered them a deity and the most graceful and beautiful animal.
Animals began to be viewed negatively during the Middle Ages, when there were witch hunts. At that time, people believed that a witch should have a black pet as a talisman and that the witch could turn into cats.

In 1233, a decree was issued that black cats are the personification of the devil.

Black kittens were even exterminated en masse, as they were believed to be accomplices of Satan.

Nowadays, it is quite difficult to believe in fairy tales about witches, but people are wary of charcoal-colored cats.

Breeds of "blackies"

There are practically no cat breeds in nature in which the only possible coat color is black. The only exception is the Mandalay, one of the varieties of Burmese cats. These animals are piercing black in color with bright yellow eyes and a piercing gaze. Only a few organizations have recognized the Mandalay as a separate breed, but now the popularity of Burmese cats is growing, and the likelihood that the Mandalay is recognized by the felinological community is correspondingly growing.

British black suit

Many breeds also include representatives of the black color, which according to the international classification is called Black. Completely black individuals are characteristic of such breeds as the American Curl, British cat, Maine Coon, European Shorthair and a number of others.

Black Maine Coon cat

Balinese, Siamese, Sacred Burmese and several other breeds boast only black paws, muzzles and tails, since they are characterized by bicolor coloring. Breeds such as the Persian or Egyptian Meow can have a smoky coloring, where the base of the hair is light in color and the middle and ends are dark gray to black. There are a lot of black fluffy cats among outbred cats, but mostly they are not pure black, often their color is supplemented with spots, mostly white.

Dream about a black cat

If you had a dream in which the main character was a black cat, then this may mean the following:

  • A dream on a weekday about a black pet means problems in relationships with others.
  • If the cat meows, is affectionate, and rubs against its legs, then this indicates that there are ill-wishers among your close circle.
  • To see a black cat on the horizon - expect trouble.
  • A pet lying on your chest is a harbinger of illness in close relatives.
  • You could become seriously ill if you dreamed about a cat the night before Christmas.
  • A strange animal that was in your house and soon left will bring good luck to your home.
  • A black fluffy ran across the road, and you caught him - don’t expect trouble.

Why cats are born black

Microscopic granules of the melanin pigment are responsible for the color of fur, as well as skin and eyes. There are two varieties of it, differing in structure - eumelanin and pheomelanin. The grains of the first are spherical in shape, they completely absorb light and give black pigmentation and all its derivatives - chocolate, blue, lilac, fawn. The ellipsoids of the second reflect light in the red range and are responsible for this color and all its varieties. The inheritance of color depends on the sex of the animal, since this gene is located on the X chromosome; this allele is not on the Y chromosome.

A cat has one X chromosome and can therefore be either black or red. The cat has two X chromosomes and three varieties of color - red, black and mixed (tortoiseshell).

The genes responsible for color are passed from mother to son. A black cat cannot give birth to a red cat, and a red female will never give birth to a black male.

Starting a family

Black cats can help arrange your love life. If a cat comes up to a girl and starts rubbing against her, it means marriage.

How it works? Black pets sense a person's aura. An animal will treat a person with love who has a good energy field. If a cat avoids people, it means they are not very nice people. And as you know, men pay attention to how girls treat their furry pets. If the mistress of the house is courteous and affectionate with the cat, then she will treat her husband in the same way. Therefore, one should not be surprised by the fact that men get acquainted, and soon start a family with women who were approached and rubbed by a black cat.

Relationships between blacks and people

Black cats are always physically very developed. They clearly have a hunting instinct, and they show it in all areas. If necessary, they hunt mice well, and if necessary, they can stand up for their owner.

Even doctors admit that black pets help protect against heart attacks. Simply stroking an animal with a calm disposition normalizes blood pressure and relieves stress accumulated during the day.

The kittens are charcoal-colored and get along well with small children. Such animals with blue eyes look especially cute. Their playfulness and activity allow them not only to run after the bow, but to tirelessly jump with the kids.

Characteristic eye color

The genetics of the pupil is less studied than the properties of fur. Researchers suggest the presence of a color gene and some polygenes that are located outside the studied structures and affect the characteristic features of the organism.

Felinologists identify three most common combinations:

  • Black cats with green (grn) eyes are a classic color combination.
  • The second group is orange, brown and amber-honey (org) eyes.
  • The final position is in the copper color range (cpr). Fairytale black cats with red eyes actually come from this category.

When recessive alleles (b, bl) come into play and various shades appear on the cat's coat, the pupil color combinations automatically dilate. But absolutely black cats have only the three listed eye colors.

This is interesting! Black coat color is never ideal. It all depends only on the degree of its saturation, which hides some natural pigmentation flaws.

Black cats bring good luck and protect against thieves

Black cats bring happiness and good luck, and also protect against thieves.

I love black cats.

Actually, it’s not just me. In Ancient Egypt, any cat was considered a messenger of the goddess of light, Bastet.

The Celts did not “lag behind” the Egyptians, who had a magical creature called Cat Shi - a huge black cat or cat the size of a dog, with a white spot on its chest, which can fulfill one cherished wish if you know the right spell.

In Ancient Greece, the cat was “gifted” to Artemis, ascribing to her the ferocity of the hunt that brought good luck.

But in the Middle Ages, inquisitors declared the black cat to be the personification of evil spirits and an assistant to witches.

We now believe that a black cat crossing the road will not bring good luck, but in ancient Ireland they believed that it was he who was the harbinger of happy changes, especially if he entered the house. People in Scotland and Australia are thinking the same thing now.

In Rus' they believed that a black cat protects the house from thieves.

And on a ship, a black cat, unlike a woman, means a successful voyage, so sailors always treat cats with love.

There is also Black Cat Day - November 17th.

They even say that a cat is a portable biogenerator that creates electromagnetic radiation, and only such a black generator can emit waves with such a frequency and amplitude that it cures a person from many diseases. And it is also believed that only a black cat can, having absorbed negative energy, turn it into positive energy and instantly return it to its owners.

In England they believe that the owner of a black cat will always be surrounded by admirers.

In Rus', a brownie, the guardian of the house, was associated with a black cat. In fact, he often appeared in the guise of a black cat with yellow eyes. It was believed that if a person came across a stray kitten along the way, he should be taken into the house. This brownie checks whether a person is good. If they take a kitten into the house, the family will always be lucky. That's why there were no abandoned cats before.

Well, at the end - about Bulgava's Cat Hippopotamus. The image of Behemoth is biblical, appearing in the Book of Job as a monster embodying Matter. Bulgakov makes it clear that behind the image of a relatively innocent jester there is a much more powerful force. “In general, the image of a jester in the literary tradition is a complex and rather scary figure, dating back to the medieval depiction of Satan. The jester has no meaning to exist because he has no “I” of his own, no personality. He tries to prolong his life by parodying (imitating) others, but in reality his self is only a heap of masks.” Actually, Behemoth (at the end of the novel he is stated as a page entertaining Woland) in “The Master and Margarita” only jokes, clownishes, and plays tricks. This werecat and Satan's favorite jester is perhaps the funniest and most memorable of Woland's retinue. Behemoth's element is fire. In the scene of the shootout in apartment No. 50, the author clearly points out the magical skills of the cat: he misleads the NKVD officers, pretending to be dead, before which Behemoth warns them: “I’m sitting, not touching anyone, I’m fixing the primus stove,” but when they don’t listen to him, he’s satisfied buffoon shootout, after which, according to the standard scheme, a fire. The relationship between Gella and Margarita and the cat deserves a separate discussion. Russian mystical thought has long attributed to the witch the possession of a black cat as an obligatory magical agent: the cat helps prepare decoctions, guards captives (as in Russian folk tales; sometimes the cat helps the captive escape), and obtains the necessary herbs and mushrooms. The hippopotamus constantly revolves around Gella, and at the ball - around Margarita. Bulgakov does not depart from Russian folklore in this matter, i.e. the ancient type "Witch with a Black Cat" is used. In the last flight, the transformation of this merry joker is very unusual (like most of the plot devices in this science fiction novel): “The night tore off the fluffy tail from the Behemoth, tore off its fur and scattered its shreds across the swamps. He who was a cat who amused the prince of darkness now turned out to be a thin youth, a demon page, the best jester that ever existed in the world.” The “Moscow Chapters” of the novel are a rehearsal for the Last Judgment as imagined by Bulgakov. And Behemoth - a petty bully who turns into a cruel destroyer - will not be out of place on it.”

All cats are mine :)
