Why and where should a dog get a veterinary passport?

Briefly about the concepts of “metrics” and “pedigree”

Before buying a puppy, the future pet owner should ask what the dog's metric is. It is the breeder's first official paper, which contains the data of the born baby, his breed, where and when he was born, coat color, nicknames and manufacturer documentation numbers.

Puppy with a passport

The pedigree indicates the nature of the origin of the animal, contains all the information relating to the dog, but unlike the primary document, it contains the data of the baby’s parents and all relatives up to the third generation, their awards and titles.

How to get a passport for a dog when you have adopted a mongrel animal or picked up a puppy on the street

All veterinary clinics process veterinary passports. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a public institution or a private one. The document itself can be purchased directly at the clinic when visiting the veterinarian. The doctor will make a note in it about the manipulations performed (vaccination, treatment, sterilization).

You can see an example of what this document looks like on the Internet or at your nearest veterinary hospital.

The passport is filled out as standard by the owner himself. Indicated in the document:

  • dog's name;
  • floor;
  • age;
  • breed;
  • color

If the owner wishes, a photo of the animal is pasted into the document with his own hands. In simple terms, the document makes a verbal description of your pet. In addition to the above information, the passport records the chip number, the date of chipping (if any), the number of the tattoo and the date of its application (if any).

The most important information that is recorded in the document is the date of vaccination, their expiration date, the date of helminthization, flea and tick treatment, and rabies vaccination.

All types of vaccinations, including rabies, must be done by a veterinarian in a veterinary clinic. The document records what date and brand the vaccination was given. Treatment for parasites is quite acceptable at home; the main thing is to make a note in the passport about when the animal was treated.

Where can you make puppies: RKF or SKOR

Mating dogs: what is mating, how pets reproduce

Puppies for all puppies from a litter are issued to the breeder by the international Russian Cynological Federation (RKF). The document is created for all babies from the litter. The only exceptions are puppies with congenital deformities. The brand is issued to the breeder for each kitten individually after all the entries in the primary document. It is tattooed on the baby dog's ear or on the inside of the thigh. Only after this the puppy is handed over to the owner of the litter.

Note! Documents for a puppy can be prepared much more easily in the Russian community SCOR, but the legality of the document of this organization is recognized only by the CIS countries.

How to restore the metric if it was lost?

If the metric was lost, it can be restored. There are several ways to do this. The first way to restore the puppy's metric is to contact the breeder from whom the dog was purchased. The breeder retains the litter inspection certificate, according to which the puppy can be restored by contacting the canine organization that registered the puppies.

The second way is to directly contact the kennel club that carried out the activation of the litter. In this case, the document will be restored according to the number of the mark on the pet’s body.

In conclusion, it is worth saying that if exhibitions or matings are planned for the dog, then there is no point in buying a puppy without a metric. If the breeder has not activated the litter and has not received the documents, then it will not be possible to make them yourself; such a pet will live in the family only as a friend and companion.

What is a metric and why is it important for a puppy, what does a standard form look like, how to fill it out correctly in accordance with the requirements of the new Regulations on Breeding, which comes into force on March 1, 2021.

Who draws up the pedigree

Microchipping of dogs: what is it and why is it necessary?

A puppy card gives permission to an animal to participate in exhibition championships, but in order to breed pedigree young animals, the dog must have a pedigree, which is issued on the basis of metrics.

To obtain a pedigree, you need to come in person or send documents (tear-off birth certificate) by mail to the Russian Cynological Federation, located in Moscow at st. Gostinichnaya, building 9. Document preparation services are also provided by kennel clubs for a fee.

The procedure for obtaining puppy registration

Even before the mating of the parents of the future puppies, for which metrics will be recorded in the future, occurs, the dog handler must obtain written permission from the club to produce offspring. Dogs participating in breeding undergo a documented inspection. The club is obliged to receive notification of the accomplished act.

A puppy is given to a newborn dog when it is 45 days old. It is issued on the basis of an application for registration, documentation from the parents of the puppies, written permission to produce offspring, and a club examination of the puppies.

It must indicate:

  • breeder's details, nursery address, contact phone number;
  • dog breed;
  • brand number, gender, coat color, dog's name;
  • details of the baby’s parents, their names, presence of a mark;
  • When a dog is rejected, its reason is indicated.

All data is entered in Russian and English via a computer.

Puppy's identification document

The document must be signed by the dog handler and certified with the club seal. You can see what a puppy’s metric is on the official website of the kennel or kennel club, where sample documents are posted.

Important! The certificate is issued to the breeder by the Russian Kynological Federation (RKF) fully completed and certified, and not as a blank form.

In addition to the main sheet with all the information, the document has a tear-off coupon that completely duplicates the data on the main sheet. When the puppy grows up, the tear-off coupon changes to a pedigree. If the metric is lost, a statement is written to the RKF that issued the document, and a duplicate is made.

How to fill out a veterinary passport correctly.

Filling out a veterinary passport for a dog or cat is not at all difficult. Most of the entries are made by a veterinarian; the owner fills out only a few fields.

Pets photo

I think everything is clear here. You can take a photo of your cat or dog and paste the resulting photo into your passport; no stamps are required, and filling out this field is at the request of the owner.

Description of the animal / Main information

Pets name

Filled out in accordance with the card or metric received from the breeder/kennel, if the animal is purebred, if not - arbitrarily.

Here, too, we indicate the breed as in the metric; for “ordinary” cats and dogs we write the word “Mestis”.

Date of birth

We indicate the exact date if there is a metric; if not, we write an approximate one.

Gender in animals is written as male and female, not male and female. You can indicate the gender as “cat”, “cat”, “male” and “bitch”, but the latter looks like a curse word, so it’s better to be a female or you can draw “shield and spear of Mars” or “mirror of Venus”, for those who have artistic abilities.

Either we write off the metrics or think for ourselves. For white and black animals everything is simple, we write “white” or “black”. There are also more complex options, for example, “tortoiseshell” or “black and tan”; here the easiest way is to look on the Internet for photographs of the colors of six cats and dogs and their names, then select the one you want and write it down in your passport.

Distinguishing marks

Usually these are some color features, for example, a white spot behind the ear, “socks” on the front legs. In this field, describe your pet's distinctive feature, if any.

Animal card number

Pedigree number

We take these numbers from the document received from the breeder or nursery; if not, we leave empty fields.

Tatoo (tag) number

This applies more to dogs, if puppies get a tattoo with the number of the kennel, this number is an identifier, and it is indicated in the passport. Recently, the stigma has become less and less common; instead, dogs and cats are microchipped.

This is where the owner completes filling out data about the animal, such fields as

Identification number

Information about animal registration / Pets Registration

To be completed by a veterinarian.

Information about the pet owner is also filled in independently. There is nothing complicated, we write the last name, first name and patronymic, address and telephone number.

The fields are filled in by the breeder; if not, leave them blank.

All other fields will be filled out by the veterinarian.

How much does it cost to replace a metric with a pedigree?

The cost of replacing a metric with a pedigree depends on the processing time (the faster, the more expensive), and on the type of documentation. Pedigree can be:

  • Domestic – allows participation in exhibition championships and breeding only on the territory of the Russian Federation, issued in Russian.
  • Export – allows participation in exhibition championships not only in the Russian Federation, but also abroad, issued in English. Issued on the basis of a dog certificate in Russian.

Additional Information. For international exhibitions, wherever they take place, an export pedigree is required. An internal certificate must be issued for a dog brought from abroad.

If you complete the documentation through a local kennel club, you will have to pay additionally for the services of an intermediary. This will take at least 2 months. In RKF this procedure takes 2 weeks.

Pedigree cost for December 2021:

  • certificate issued in two languages without division into export and domestic – 3,000 rubles;
  • certificate without breeding rights - 1500 rubles.

Note! An additional fee for documents for a puppy purchased through a kennel is illegal, since it is already included in the price of the purchased dog.

The need for documents for a dog

Various documents are drawn up for dogs to solve the following problems:

  • guarantee the purity of the breed to the buyer;
  • confirm belonging to a certain breed - this is especially important in puppyhood, since the exterior will change;
  • provide information about ancestors - this is important not only for the pedigree, but also allows you to predict possible genetic or hereditary problems;
  • provide the opportunity to participate in exhibitions and competitions;
  • transport the dog to other cities and countries;
  • Confirm and monitor your pet's health status.

What does the main set of documents look like?

The main document is in A4 format, filled out on both sides. It is protected with watermarks with colored fibers and is laminated. The emblem of the canine organization and its hologram are printed on the front side, and all the animal’s data is printed on the other side.
