Loxicom for cats: instructions for use and suspension dosage, analogues and price

Composition and release form

The medicine is available in the form of a light yellow suspension for oral use. During storage, sediment may appear at the bottom, so before use the bottle should be shaken thoroughly to ensure even distribution of the components. Loxicom is packaged in transparent polymer bottles. Their volume ranges from 15 to 100 ml. All bottles are packed in cardboard boxes along with dispensing syringes. They have a “mass scale”, which greatly simplifies measuring the required amount of suspension.

The active substance is meloxicam. Its concentration in 1 ml of the drug can be 0.5 or 1.5 mg. Medicines with lower concentrations are usually used for small breed dogs, and higher concentrations for medium and large breeds.

The composition also includes auxiliary substances:

  • lemon acid;
  • sodium benzoate;
  • glycerol;
  • povidone K30;
  • simethicone emulsion;
  • purified water, etc.

The medicine has a pleasant smell. Animals usually consume it without problems.

Pharmacological properties

The active substance stops the production of substances that are involved in inflammatory processes. As a result, Loxicom has the following effect:

  • lowers the animal’s body temperature;
  • eliminates inflammatory processes;
  • relieves swelling and eliminates redness;
  • reduces pain.

The advantage of the drug is its rapid action. The maximum level in the blood occurs after just 4-5 hours, when the condition improves. The half-life of the active substance, which accumulates in the liver, is 24 hours. In this regard, the medication is usually taken once a day.

Purpose

Loxicom is a light yellow suspension, packaged in a polymer bottle with a protective cap. The drug is used to get rid of the following problems:

  1. Reduce body temperature.
  2. Eliminate any pain.
  3. Relieve swelling.
  4. Stop the inflammatory process.

The medication is optimal for fractures and other injuries, as it can relieve all symptoms and discomfort at the same time. It will also be useful in the postoperative period.

The use of the medicine is strictly prohibited for pregnant cats, as well as for those animals who have any problems with the gastrointestinal tract.

Indications for use

Dogs are active animals, so joint problems and diseases of the musculoskeletal system are quite common. Old pets are more susceptible to the development of pathologies, but they can also be observed in young animals.

Loksik is prescribed for dogs in the following cases:

  • for chronic pathologies of the joints and musculoskeletal system (arthritis, arthrosis, osteoporosis, etc.);
  • for dislocations, fractures, sprains;
  • for bruises and damage to soft tissues;
  • for inflammation of various origins.

The drug can also be included in complex therapy after surgical interventions to relieve pain, prevent the appearance of edema and the development of the inflammatory process.

The drug can be used only as prescribed by a doctor. If the dose is calculated incorrectly, serious side effects may occur, which will lead to a deterioration in the pet’s health.

An anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug is used to relieve symptoms and alleviate the course of the disease, but cannot be used for treatment as the main drug.

First aid kit for pain

Magnetic therapy. This method of physiotherapy came to veterinary medicine from medicine. Magnets methods effectively relieve inflammation and alleviate pain in many diseases. Special “harnesses” have been created for cats, allowing the plates to be firmly secured to almost any place on the body.

If your cat is in severe pain, it needs immediate and effective help. First of all, it is important to stabilize the functioning of the heart and improve the supply of oxygen to tissues. This is why pain relief medications are needed. However, many owners do not know what painkillers can be given to cats.

One of the safest non-steroidal analgesics is considered to be ordinary aspirin, also called acetylsalicylic acid. It must be used with caution. Some cats, when taking aspirin, begin to vomit, increase salivation, and develop a depressive state. In case of an overdose, the animal loses its appetite and its acid-base balance is disturbed. There may be problems with coordination of movements. Sometimes there are even signs of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Loxicom is quite safe as a pain reliever. It is produced in the form of a suspension and injected into the animal’s mouth with a dispenser syringe. The advantage of Loxicom is the convenience of dosage; in addition, it is eliminated by the body quite quickly. In case of overdose, vomiting, diarrhea, and allergic reactions are possible.

From the tablet preparations in the household first aid kit, it is permissible to use pentalgin, spasmalgon, naise, ketorol, and sedalgin.

Instructions for use

Loxicom is given to dogs according to the following scheme:

  1. For greater effectiveness, a double dose is prescribed on the first day. It is 0.2 mg of active substance per 1 kg of weight. If a suspension with a concentration of 1.5 mg/ml is used, then 0.13 ml will be needed per kilogram. When using a medicine with a higher concentration (0.5 mg/ml), you need to measure 0.4 ml for each kilogram.
  2. On the second and all subsequent days of treatment, the dose is halved. To calculate the maintenance dose, you should take 0.07 ml of the drug containing the active substance 0.5 mg/ml or 0.2 ml of a suspension with 1.5 mg/ml meloxicam for each kilogram of the pet’s weight.

For dogs weighing up to 5 kg, a medication with a lower concentration is recommended. It should be noted that when measuring a dose with a small syringe, one division is calculated for 250 grams of weight, with a large syringe - for 1 kg.

Pets whose weight ranges from 5 to 75 kg should be given a more concentrated Loxicom. When using a small syringe, please note that one division is designed for 500 grams. In a large syringe, one division is designed for 2.5 kg.

The drug has a strong effect on the gastrointestinal tract, so it is not recommended to take it on an empty stomach.

The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor depending on the nature of the disease, its course, and symptoms. The course should not exceed 10 days.

II. PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Loxicom oral suspension is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

Meloxicam, which is part of the drug, has a pronounced anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effect.

The main mechanism of action is based on the ability of meloxicam to suppress the production of cycloxygenase in the arachidonic acid cycle, affecting mainly cycloxygenase-II, under the influence of which the synthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins occurs, causing inflammation, swelling and pain.

When administered orally, meloxicam is rapidly absorbed from the intestine and reaches maximum plasma concentration within 4.5 hours. Meloxicam is metabolized in the liver and excreted from the body mainly with bile (up to 75%), mainly in the form of a metabolite of glucuronic acid.

In terms of the degree of impact on the body, Loxicom oral suspension is classified as a moderately hazardous substance (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007).

III. ORDER OF APPLICATION

Loxicom oral suspension is prescribed to dogs and cats as an anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic drug for inflammatory and pain syndromes of various origins, including acute and chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system (arthritis, arthrosis, synovitis, dislocations), inflammatory diseases of soft tissues, as well as as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug in the postoperative period.

Contraindications for the use of the drug are individual hypersensitivity of the animal to meloxicam, gastric and duodenal ulcers, severe renal and liver failure, hemorrhagic syndrome.

Loxicom oral suspension should not be used by pregnant and lactating females, puppies and kittens under 6 weeks of age, animals in a state of dehydration, hypovolemia and hypotension, due to the possible toxic effect of the drug on the kidneys. If it is absolutely necessary to prescribe a drug to such animals, treatment is carried out under the constant supervision of a veterinarian, and the daily dose of the drug is reduced by 2 times.

Loxicom oral suspension is used during feeding individually orally once a day.

For cats, the drug is used on the first day of treatment at a dose of 0.1 mg of meloxicam per 1 kg of animal weight (which for Loxicom is 0.5 mg/cm3 - 0.2 ml/kg), on subsequent days - 0.05 mg of meloxicam per 1 kg of animal weight (which for Loxicom is 0.5 mg/cm3 - 0.1 ml/kg).

Before use, the bottle with the drug must be shaken. During storage, sediment may form, which, when shaken, forms a uniform suspension.

Each consumer package is equipped with dosing syringes, which allows for the most accurate dosage of the drug for both large and small breed dogs, as well as cats.

For cats it is administered using a dispenser syringe. When dosing at the rate of 0.05 mg/kg (maintenance dose), one division of the syringe is calculated per 1 kg of animal weight.

In case of overdose, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, depression, bleeding and ulcers of the gastrointestinal tract may occur. If you have symptoms of an overdose, you should immediately contact a veterinarian.

If the animal’s individual sensitivity to meloxicam is increased or signs of allergy appear, the use of Loxicom oral suspension is stopped and the animals are prescribed antihistamines.

The duration of the course of treatment depends on the indications and condition of the animal and is determined by the attending veterinarian, but should not exceed 10 days. If there is no improvement in the clinical condition of the animal after a 10-day course of treatment, the use of the drug is discontinued.

Omissions should be avoided when administering the next dose of the drug, as this may lead to a decrease in therapeutic effectiveness. If you miss one dose, give it as soon as possible. Further, the interval until the next administration of the drug does not change.

When using Loxicom oral suspension, as when using other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, in rare cases the animal may experience irritation of the gastric mucosa and vomiting.

It is not recommended to use Loxicom oral suspension simultaneously, as well as within 24 hours before and 24 hours after stopping the use of other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, glucocorticoids and potentially nephrotoxic drugs.

IV. PERSONAL PREVENTION MEASURES

When using Loxicom oral suspension, you must follow the general rules of personal hygiene and safety precautions provided for when working with medications.

When working with the drug, do not drink, smoke or eat. After handling the medicine, you should wash your hands with soap.

Side effects

Like most non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Loxicom is a moderately hazardous substance. An overdose of it can cause serious side effects that affect your pet's health. The dog may experience:

  • nausea and vomiting;
  • apathy and loss of strength;
  • lack of appetite;
  • diarrhea.

The anti-inflammatory may cause ulcers and internal bleeding. This is usually indicated by the brown color of the stool or the presence of bloody spots, as well as the presence of blood in the vomit. In this case, you should seek help from a veterinarian immediately.

If side effects occur, stop taking the drug. Since there is no antidote, symptomatic treatment is prescribed. Consultation with a doctor is required.

Other painkillers

Analogues of Loxicom include Meloxivet. It has the same main substance - meloxicam. But it is available in the form of an injection solution. Injections are prescribed for large breed dogs and farm animals. The course of treatment consists of two injections, the interval between which is two days.

Travmatin is a homeopathic analogue of Loxicom. It contains a complex of medicinal plant extracts with anti-inflammatory effects.

Low toxicity of the components eliminates the occurrence of side effects. But the injections must be done twice a day for 7-10 days.

Traumeel is an effective and safe pain reliever. Thanks to herbal components, its use is possible for puppies, pregnant and lactating bitches. The gel is used to treat hematomas, bruises, and frostbite. And injections help with concussions, burns, and pain after surgery.

From the date of manufacture, the medicine can be stored for two years. After the expiration date, it is prohibited to use. After opening the bottle, the suspension can be used for 6 months.
