Characteristics and description of the breed
At first glance, the Pharaoh Hound amazes with its grace and perfection of form. It is adopted by people who value intelligence, grace, activity and friendliness in a pet. Since according to the classification it belongs to the greyhounds, keeping such a dog requires the owner to be in good physical shape.
Aggressiveness
There is a legend that it was the Pharaoh's dog that people were the first to domesticate and since then it has been man's most reliable friend. Aggressiveness is completely unusual for the breed. She reacts differently to people:
- is gentle and friendly with the owners;
- she is careful with strangers, but not aggressive.
The only situation when the Pharaoh Hound's desire to chase and kill awakens is when hunting. On a regular walk, you can walk with her even without a leash, the people around you will definitely be safe. But birds, cats and other small animals may suffer. Moreover, under the influence of the hunting instinct, the dog stops hearing commands and responding to the words of the owner. Such a fascinating creature.
Activity
Pharaoh Hounds are very active and need to exercise a lot every day. You need to walk with them often and for a long time. Ideally, in large desert areas or parks. You should not let the Pharaoh Hound off the leash near roads: cars are dangerous for him, but he himself does not feel threatened by them and may get hurt. The lack of movement affects the “Egyptian’s” mood: he becomes sad and whines.
The strength of this dog is its well-developed jumping ability. She can overcome obstacles up to two meters high. Here are two recommendations:
- the area where you walk your dog should be well fenced;
- It is desirable that there is somewhere to jump.
By the way, it is this quality that makes the Pharaoh Hound an indispensable and successful participant in agility.
Training
Pharaoh hounds are intelligent and highly trainable. They learn commands easily and quickly, but sometimes they may not follow them. This happens for two reasons:
- the dog is thoughtful (like many hunting dogs, Pharaohs tend to think about the command first);
- the dog was distracted. If the situation has developed in such a way that the dog has seen “game”, then it no longer reacts to anything. This is the peculiarity of the “pharaohs”, which should be taken for granted.
Except for these cases, no problems with the dog arise either at home or at shows.
Shedding
The coat of these dogs is very short and dense, they hardly shed and do not smell like a dog at all.
Need for care
The dog does not require complex care. It is enough to carry out hygiene procedures once a week, wash the dog and trim its nails as necessary.
Friendliness and attitude towards children
This breed is very friendly, although it requires early socialization. But not because of aggressiveness, but because of the timidity inherent in puppies. Once they get used to people, they become excellent companions.
You need to perceive the Pharaoh Hound as a member of the family: it is gentle and caring towards children, and gladly participates in all family entertainment.
She makes an impression on people thanks to two of her skills that are unusual for other dogs:
- she knows how to “smile” by stretching her lips and wrinkling her nose;
- blushes easily. True, this is not a sign of shame - the nose and ears turn red when dogs are excited or very interested in something.
Pharaoh dogs are affectionate and attentive with children. However, the child must behave correctly: do not wake up the sleeping dog, do not pull his ears and tail, do not distract him while he is eating. In any case, it is better not to leave small children alone with large dogs, even if the dogs are kind.
Health
In general, these dogs are in good health. They live for many years cheerful and active if you follow certain rules:
- use good food;
- provide the dog with sufficient physical activity;
- maintain a comfortable psychological environment in the house (“Egyptians” are highly susceptible to stress);
- visit the veterinarian at least once a year;
- get the necessary vaccinations on time.
Attitude towards loneliness
Leaving Pharaoh Hounds alone is not recommended. Without communication, they begin to feel sad and may begin to whine or bark tediously for a long time.
Maintenance cost
The costs of maintaining pharaoh dogs are no different from the amounts spent on other expensive breeds.
Due to their tendency to allergies, they cannot be given economy-class food - only premium.
Such a dog does not need a kennel - it should only live at home.
A separate expense item is clothing. Since short hair does not provide reliable protection from the Russian cold, dogs should purchase blankets or overalls for the winter and raincoats for the fall.
Intelligence
Pharaoh dogs are very smart. Like many hunting breeds, they are not prone to blindly following commands, but rather think about them before executing them.
They love when they are satisfied, but at the same time they demand respectful treatment. They see themselves as a full member of the family and expect the same from others.
They have a hard time withstanding family conflicts and are sensitive to the mood of the owners and the atmosphere in the house. If something goes wrong, they may even get sick.
Noise
For all their calm character, “Egyptians” have one unpleasant feature: they love to bark. Moreover, they start making noise for any reason:
- if you heard something suspicious;
- if you saw “prey”, for example, a bird in the window;
- when a stranger appears;
- if they are bored.
Therefore, the neighbors next door may be unhappy.
Security qualities
It is better not to use such a dog as a guard - it has poorly developed necessary qualities. She is friendly and will not interfere with the attacker (unless she announces his appearance by barking).
Lifespan
Dogs live 15–17 years and remain active and mobile until the very end.
Character and habits of pharaoh dogs
Pharaoh's dogs, despite their impressive appearance and strength, are very gentle pets that are strongly attached to their owner. They do not single out any of their household members and accept affection from everyone equally, but they never impose themselves.
The dog is distrustful of strangers and is always on guard in their presence. Earning their trust is very difficult if they have not known the person since early childhood. The Pharaoh Hound does not show aggression unless there are serious reasons for it.
The animal treats pets rather condescendingly without showing any warm feelings. A dog can safely live under the same roof with a cat, small rodents, and other dogs. If a dog is on the street and encounters a strange cat, his hunting instincts may awaken and he will rush after her, despite the owner’s protests. With other dogs the pet behaves with dignity, but in a friendly manner. In case of a threat, he is always ready to attack and speak out in defense of his household.
Interesting fact: Pharaoh's dog is very patient with children, ready to tolerate their mischief and participate in games. If the attitude is too rude, he will simply walk away without retaliatory aggression.
Representatives of the breed always make decisions independently. If the owner's command is impractical from the pet's point of view, then it will be difficult to achieve. The use of moral pressure or physical violence is unacceptable. Boring and repetitive lessons quickly bore the dog, it becomes stubborn, and its attention wanders. It is necessary to organize games in such a way that the pet is interested in the process.
Story
This is one of the most ancient breeds on earth. Legend dates its appearance to the times of the pharaohs (hence the name): they say the dog looks very similar to the god Anubis.
There really is a resemblance, although Anubis had the head of a jackal, not a dog. However, genetic studies refute the theory of the origin of these dogs from Ancient Egypt.
But it is reliably known that this breed is closely related to the island of Malta. There it existed in its original form for centuries. The Pharaoh Hound was first described in the mid-17th century.
They were taken out from Malta only at the beginning of the 20th century. It took another 50 years for the breed and its standards to be officially recognized.
Today, the Pharaoh Hound is one of the rarest and most expensive breeds not only in Russia, but also in the world.
Interesting facts about pharaoh dogs
It is believed that pharaoh dogs originated from mixing the blood of the most ancient representatives of the wolf and jackal families. In Ancient Egypt they were worshiped as the incarnation of the god Anubis on earth.
According to many owners of these graceful dogs, they may be aware of their guilt and even embarrassed. At this moment, the tip of the dog’s muzzle and ears turn pink. When a pet is happy and in a good mood, its lips stretch into something like a smile.
Representatives of the ancient breed are very independent and their owner will always have to assert his authority so that the pet obeys him.
Due to the fact that for many centuries the Pharaoh Hound existed in the wild and it was forced to hide traces of its presence from predators, it is characterized by coprophagia, that is, eating its own feces. The pet owner will have to come to terms with this feature and try to immediately remove traces of its vital activity so that it does not become a habit.
For these dogs, a standard two-time walk every day is not enough. They need active running and energy-consuming games several times a day.
If the dog is left alone in the apartment, he will immediately begin to howl loudly. The reason for the howling is not the animal’s fear, but simple boredom.
This breed has a unique hunting technique in which the dog jumps over the hole where the prey is hiding, and then lands on all fours. The victim leaves his shelter, and the dog immediately rushes in pursuit of him.
Appearance (breed standards)
The dogs look aristocratically elegant and graceful, similar in appearance to greyhounds. The silhouette is sharply outlined, the posture is noble, the physique is athletic.
They are medium sized dogs. They reach a height of:
- males – 56-63 cm;
- females – 53-61 cm.
They weigh on average from 20 to 30 kg, especially large specimens can weigh 45 kg. Bitches are inferior to males in both weight and height.
Head
The appearance of pharaoh dogs is noble. They have:
- wedge-shaped pointed head;
- elongated muzzle;
- clear lines of the skull;
- large nose of red, brown or flesh color.
Eyes
The eyes of the Pharaoh Hound are very original. They:
- small;
- oval shape;
- shiny;
- amber hue;
- The color is in harmony with the coat color.
Puppies are born blue-eyed, but the color begins to change already at one month of age, gradually shifting towards golden.
Ears
The ears of the Pharaoh Hound have an original shape. They:
- large;
- raised high;
- stand straight up;
- wide at the base;
- sharply tapering towards the ends.
Jaws
The jaws are powerful and well developed.
Torso
Dogs are very elegant and beautiful:
- a slim body;
- a pronounced waist, like that of a greyhound;
- the chest protrudes forward.
Neck
Neck to match the whole figure:
- long;
- muscular;
- dry.
Tail
The tail is curved like a sickle when the dog is excited, and slightly lowered when calm. Its features:
- thick at the base;
- strongly tapering towards the end.
Paws
The legs of the “Egyptians” are long, slender, strong and graceful.
Wool
Wool is very practical:
- short;
- thick;
- without undercoat;
- close to the body;
- shiny.
Color
Color - brown. According to breed standards, the coat should be yellow-brown, and can also range from red to chestnut.
Markings acceptable, always white. They may be located:
- on the chest. A wide, sometimes vaguely defined stripe or “star”;
- at the tip of the tail. Dot;
- on the forehead. "Star";
- on the bridge of the nose. Band;
- on the paws. Little "socks".
The color of the nose, paw pads, claws and whiskers should match the overall tone of the coat.
Popular colors of pharaoh hounds
The pharaoh's dog is characterized by a smooth and rather thick coat without undercoat. Short hairs are very soft, silky and shiny. The length of the coat is uniform throughout the body, with the exception of the muzzle and ears, where it is always slightly shorter. The standard allows for the fiery color of pharaoh hounds, which can vary from red to rich brown. The color should be bright and rich.
Marks on the muzzle, white marks on the chest, fingers, and head are undesirable, but they are not considered a defect. Fawn shades and light markings on the tail are allowed. White color on the sides and nape is considered a serious flaw, which can lead to the complete disqualification of the dog.
Interesting fact: Due to the lack of undercoat, Pharaoh Hounds do not tolerate cold well, so they are not suitable for breeders in northern latitudes with long and harsh winters.
If the winter is quite warm, then it is possible to use special clothing for dogs in the form of overalls, which must be used from late October to April. In rainy weather, you should use a raincoat, as your pet can easily catch a cold. Such a dog should live exclusively in an apartment or house; keeping it on the street is completely excluded.
Their short hair is almost not subject to shedding, and the animal does not have a characteristic “dog” smell, which is an undoubted advantage of the breed. There is no need to comb the dog, just walk it with a hard glove once a week. They are also washed rarely - once or twice a year and always without using detergents.
Character
By nature, the dogs are peaceful and obedient, but somewhat eccentric. Even with the best upbringing, their psyche is dominated by the hunting instinct, which they cannot fight. As soon as they see potential prey (it could be a cat, bird, hedgehog, rat, etc.), they stop perceiving commands and rush in pursuit. It is impossible to stop them even with a fence with live wire.
Otherwise, Pharaoh dogs have numerous positive qualities. They:
- sociable;
- smart;
- cheerful;
- thoughtful;
- non-aggressive;
- active;
- filled with self-esteem.
Price and where to buy a puppy
When looking for a baby of such a rare breed, you can only contact a well-known nursery. It is impossible to purchase a representative of this breed on the poultry market. When choosing a baby, pay attention to the reputation of the breeder and the living conditions of the puppy’s parents.
The cost of puppies depends on exhibition prospects. And if a baby with defects and without documents can be sold to you for $1,000, then an elite individual will cost five times more.

Maintenance and care
Pharaoh dogs must live in the house. You can keep them in an apartment, but they don’t have enough space there. A country cottage with a plot is the best conditions for them.
You can’t keep them on a chain in the yard - the Russian climate is not suitable for them. A dog can only be placed in an enclosure for the summer, with an obligatory overnight stay in the house.
When preparing the enclosure, remember about the increased jumping ability of the “Egyptians” and the hunting instinct. That is, the enclosure should be:
- tightly closed so that the dog does not see what is happening in the wild and does not react to the random appearance of “game”;
- with high walls. A fence less than two meters high will not hold a dog.
Nutrition
In order for your dog to be active and healthy, you can (and should) use ready-made food, preferably premium.
You should consume 1.5–2 bowls of dry food per day. But keep in mind that these numbers are relative. Dogs, like people, depending on their physical form, lifestyle, and pastime, need different amounts of food. Exactly how much to give to a particular dog can only be determined experimentally. But be that as it may, meals should be two meals a day.
A natural diet is also acceptable. It should include:
- meat;
- cottage cheese;
- vegetables;
- fruits.
Please note: fruit should be given in small quantities and with caution, as dogs are prone to allergies.
In addition to cottage cheese, it is recommended to give kefir to puppies.
Hygiene
The dog requires minimal care:
- once a week, wipe the entire body with a damp cloth (you can use a special glove);
- You should wash it rarely, depending on how dirty it gets. The optimal schedule is 1–2 times a year. Use baby shampoo or skip it altogether;
- trim toenails. They grow back quickly and then interfere with running and jumping.
There is no need to comb the Pharaoh's Hound.
Health and illness
In general, these dogs have good health, but there are also problems typical for them:
- do not tolerate anesthesia well. A dose that would not harm another dog could kill a Pharaoh's dog;
- prone to allergies;
- frequent ear infections;
- hip dysplasia;
- dislocated knee;
- hypothyroidism;
- bloating;
- von Willebrand's disease.
Because their fur is too short, pharaoh dogs can get cold on walks and catch colds.
An important point: “Egyptians” have an excellent appetite, but their sense of satiety is poorly developed. This raises two problems:
- binge eating;
- obesity.
By nature, “pharaohs” are very slender, and the appearance of excess weight is not even immediately noticeable. A simple test: if a dog’s ribs cannot be felt, it is in the early stages of obesity. You should review your diet and increase physical activity.
Mating
Bitches usually go into heat for the first time between 6 months and one year of age. This means the onset of puberty, but veterinarians do not recommend breeding so early. Optimal age for first mating:
- in females – a year and 8 months–2 years;
- for males – 2 years – 2 years and 3 months.
If you do not comply with these deadlines, you cannot count on the appearance of healthy offspring.
The next mating can be carried out only a year after the previous birth.
Walks
Walks play a huge role in the life of a Pharaoh Hound; without them, he will never be healthy and happy.
Physical activity should be given at least half an hour a day - this is a critical minimum. Ideally, you need to walk for at least three hours. It’s very good if you do cycling or jogging - the dog will be happy to accompany you.
Things to consider:
- If you are walking in a crowded place or near a highway, keep your dog on a leash. It is unknown what can awaken her hunting instinct and when she will rush away from you.
- In autumn and winter, do not take your dog out without clothes. “Egyptians” are thin; they have no fat that could provide warmth in cold and wet weather. Therefore, make sure that your pet is warm and comfortable. You can put on it:
- blanket;
- overalls;
- raincoat;
- jacket
Health and life expectancy
Pharaoh hounds live from 11 to 13 years .
Main diseases:
- Sensitivity to anesthesia. Because this breed has little body fat, they are sensitive to anesthesia and require less dosage than a dog of the same weight of another breed. If your dog is undergoing surgery, make sure your veterinarian is aware of this breed characteristic.
- Allergy. The breed has three types of allergies: to food components, contact allergies (for example, to shampoos) and to various irritants in the air (pollen, dust).
Otherwise, this is a breed with good health; the main thing is to protect it from hypothermia and wear a sweater or jacket even when the temperature drops slightly.
Training and education
Training a Pharaoh Hound should begin as early as possible: by the age of three months, it should already know and follow the basic commands “sit”, “lie down”, “paw”. They are quite easy to train, but you should choose the right tactics:
- act only through encouragement and not through punishment;
- express dissatisfaction by raising the tone of voice, but not to the point of screaming - the dog will understand that he is wrong;
- Do not repeat the same commands for a long time. The dog has a hunting mentality and gets tired of monotony;
- be patient and use creative methods.
In order for a dog to grow up well-mannered and friendly, it must adapt to society at a very early age. Take your puppy with you for walks and even to stores (if dogs are allowed there), introduce him to as many people as possible, and allow him to communicate. If you don’t do this, you risk getting a timid dog that is afraid of everything, and from here it’s one step to mental deviations and aggressive behavior.
Diet of pharaoh dogs
Pharaoh dogs usually gain muscle mass by the age of three, and before that, a sufficient amount of protein must be included in their diet. As a rule, dogs are not susceptible to food allergies and there are no problems with choosing food.
Adults are fed twice a day. Preferably prepared feed of the highest quality. If the dog is on a natural diet, then it must be balanced with the obligatory addition of vitamins and microelements. Calorie content should be compared with the physical activity of the pet and its age.
When using natural food, you must adhere to the following rules:
- Your pet's diet should include only lean meat, which is best scalded or frozen beforehand to prevent infection by parasites;
- The menu of a dog of any age should be designed in such a way as to fully satisfy the body’s needs for nutrients;
- Fermented milk products and chicken eggs in reasonable quantities are good for dogs;
- Smoked meats, sweets, flour and other harmful products are completely excluded;
- As a source of carbohydrates and fiber, it is useful to add various cereals, but not legumes;
- Be sure to accustom your pet to vegetables and herbs.
Pharaohs should not be overfed or given foods that cause excessive gas formation. Between meals, your pet should have time to get hungry. It is important to have free access to a bowl of clean water. All nutritional supplements should be introduced into the diet only after consultation with a veterinarian, since excess amounts of vitamins can be even more harmful than their deficiency.
Pros and cons of the breed
Like any breed, the Pharaoh Hound has strengths and weaknesses.
Its advantages:
- Character. This is a cheerful and sociable dog. He easily fits into the family and becomes an integral part of it.
- Relative unpretentiousness. “Egyptians” cannot be kept only in a booth on a chain. All other conditions - in an apartment, in a cottage, in an enclosure - are suitable for them.
- Well developed intellect. These dogs are smart and easy to train. There are no problems with them either in education or training.
- Eternal readiness for active pastime. Pharaoh dogs are always in the mood to walk, play and run.
Flaws:
- Insatiable hunting instinct. Because of it, the dog may “break the roof” and run away after the prey without listening to commands. For the same reason, it is better not to get this breed if you have other animals at home - they may get hurt.
- Huge energy. To use it up, you need to walk and play with the dog for several hours a day. Otherwise, bursts of energy can become unpleasant and turn into whims and even aggression.
- Inability to be alone. “Pharaohs” begin to feel sad if they are left without human society. When depressed they may bark and howl.
- Unadapted to the northern climate. In cold and rain, the dog should not be taken out without clothes. She has no fat layer and her coat does not have undercoat, which means it is not suitable for keeping warm.
Breeding pharaoh dogs
Having decided to have a pharaoh, you need to take into account the peculiarities of his character. Even not all experienced breeders are able to cope with raising a wayward animal; it is necessary to win the respect of the pet and establish your role as a leader. If you lack experience, it is better to turn to a specialist for help.
Puppies need early socialization. During subsequent training, you should take into account the pet’s innate hunting instincts and its incredible energy. It is necessary to build training in the format of an interesting game so that the dog does not get bored and actively responds to commands.
Interesting fact: Pregnancy and childbirth in Pharaoh dogs usually proceed without complications. There are from 3 to 10 babies in a litter. Childbirth usually occurs on days 58-63.
From the second half of pregnancy, it is necessary to limit the female’s contacts with other dogs, reduce her physical activity, and exclude climbing stairs and jumping. During this period, the amount of food must be increased every week by 10 percent at the expense of proteins. Additionally, add vitamins to your diet.
Pharaohs are very heat-loving and should be kept in a house or other warm room. The place to sleep should be in a secluded place without drafts. You should definitely purchase special dog clothing for walking during the winter months. The place for resting and eating must be kept perfectly clean.
Considering the rarity of this breed and the correspondingly high cost of puppies, you should soberly assess your capabilities for correctly maintaining and raising a pet. Improper care and insufficient attention to the dog will negatively affect its health and, ultimately, can lead to early death.
How to choose a puppy
You should buy a puppy exclusively from a nursery. They are mainly located abroad, but there are a few in Russia. If you buy a dog secondhand, there is a high risk of running into fraud and getting a mixed breed or a puppy with disabilities. But even after contacting the nursery, do not forget to look at the documents of the parents, get the puppy’s birth certificate and a certificate of when and what it was vaccinated against.
A healthy Pharaoh Hound puppy is moderately well-fed, active and curious, and also has:
- clear eyes;
- cold and wet nose;
- there are all the characteristics dictated by the breed standard.

Owner reviews
Maria : don’t be afraid to train the dog yourself. It's very simple. He makes contact well, you just need to do it in the form of a game. It is advisable not to leave him alone for a long time - he will dismantle half the house. From the first days, take care of your health and problems will not arise. It’s still interesting how puppies’ eyes change from turquoise to amber. By the way, people pay a lot of attention to dogs on the street :)
Vladislav : It’s very difficult to say something definite. We love our dog very much, we got it after we played with him enough. We overcame everything: they taught us commands, weaned us from hooliganism. But he is often sick and constantly catches colds. It’s good that you have now found “your” veterinarian, he understands the breed and dosage of medications. One thing I can say for sure – children are best friends!
Dmitry : I advise you to keep the pharaoh in a private house. In the apartment he will bark and howl from loneliness. But even in the house he keeps an eye on him. He will jump over the fence and get his prey. So catch him in the neighbors. In general, like any dog, he requires attention and patience, but he will answer you with absolute love and devotion.

Psychology
A dog's cheerful disposition can be manifested not only by excessive energy and playfulness.
In a fit of joy, the animal can even “smile,” characteristically wrinkling its nose and stretching its mouth.
At these moments, all the goodwill and openness of the breed is revealed.
Other character traits:
- Devotion. The animal quickly becomes attached not only to the owner, but also to all family members, shows care and affection, at the same time, like the Beauceron and Kangal , it is quite wary of strangers, but does not show aggression without reason.
- Pronounced hunting instinct. Having smelled prey, the dog rushes to hunt, without listening to any commands from the owner, and shows aggression towards rodents like degu squirrels and lemmings , birds and even cats.
- High intelligence. Pharaoh dogs are very smart and independent, capable of making independent decisions. If the animal considers the owner’s order to be incorrect, it will not carry it out.

- Conscientiousness. The feeling of shame makes the animal blush in the literal sense of the word - the rims of the eyes, ears, and nose begin to turn red in a conscientious dog.
- Love for children. The animal is great with children, just like a Boerboel or Dogue de Bordeaux .

Pharaoh Hound loves the good life
Features of feeding
The Pharaoh Hound is an active and energetic pet.
Until the age of three, the animal builds muscle mass and therefore needs an increased protein content in its food. Typically, such pets are not picky and happily eat both dry food and natural food. It all depends on the preferences of the owner.
The dog's commercial diet should be only of the highest quality, premium, or super premium classes.
Important! You should not save on your pet’s nutrition; low-quality products will undermine the animal’s health, and the saved money will have to be given to the veterinarian.
When feeding “natural”, the diet should include lean meats and liver:
- Chicken;
- Turkey;
- Beef;
- Unpeeled tripe;
- Udder;
- Kidneys.
Important! If meat is fed raw, it must be pre-frozen.
Fermented milk products are also required in the Pharaoh Hound’s diet. Kefir, fermented baked milk and cottage cheese of moderate fat content are best given to her in the morning, after a walk. Once a week, it is advisable to mix a raw egg into the cottage cheese.
Porridge should be present in a minimal amount on your pet's menu. Well-cooked cereals (rice, buckwheat) can be added to dairy products in the morning feeding, or mixed with meat.
Vegetables, as a source of additional vitamins, are also necessary. It is advisable to give them raw. If your pet refuses whole carrots, you need to grate them and add them to any food in the bowl. Zucchini, cabbage, sweet peppers and pumpkin can be mixed with tripe or kidneys. These products have a strong smell, and the presence of a vegetable side dish will go unnoticed.
It is highly recommended not to overfeed the Pharaoh Hound; it must retain its pristine leanness and elegance.
