Vaccination for dogs Multikan: where and how to do it, diagram

Description of the drug Multikan

Please note that this vaccine is not a drug as such, that is, it does not serve to treat the disease, but only to prevent it. The drug can only be administered to a completely healthy pet.

Dosage form

Multikan 8 consists of two components, each of which is packaged in a separate glass bottle:

  • The dry component is a powder with a yellow-pink tint, which has a porous structure. It is obtained by drying viruses using a special technology. It contains a strain of plague virus, parvovirus, coronavirus and adenovirus.
  • The liquid component is a yellow or pink suspension. The liquid is usually clear, but may be slightly cloudy. During storage, a gray or white precipitate forms, so the liquid must be shaken well before mixing with the dry component. The liquid component contains strains of rabies and leptospira viruses.

The bottle contains 1 ml of dry component, and 2 ml of liquid component. When mixing the components, one dose of the vaccine is obtained.

In production, glass vials are packaged in plastic containers, but at the pharmacy you can easily buy one or several doses depending on the need, for example, the number of animals being vaccinated.

Properties and composition

"Multican-6" is a safe drug for dogs that is effective against the following diseases: adenovirus infection, distemper, leptospirosis, as well as coronavirus and parvovirus enteritis. This vaccine is used to vaccinate puppies when they reach a certain age.

One dose of the drug contains the following composition:

  • canine distemper virus – at least 103.5 TCD50;
  • causative agent of canine parvovirus – at least 512 GAU;
  • canine adenovirus virus – minimum 104.0 TCD50;
  • causative agent of canine coronavirus – minimum 105.0 TCD50;
  • Leptospira virus serogroups – at least 300 million adjuvant cells.

The product consists of two ampoules:

  • inactivated mixture, which is a liquid. They include a pure culture of Leptospira 2 types of serogroups along with an adjuvant;
  • lyophilized preparation. It contains attenuated strains of canine coronavirus pathogens along with adenovirus, distemper, and parvovirus.

The homogeneous suspension in the ampoule has a pink tint. The porous mass in another ampoule is characterized by a yellow-pink color.

After introducing the solution into the animal’s body, the vaccination begins to take effect within 2–3 weeks. As a result, the pet acquires immunity to the viruses listed above, which lasts for 6–8 months. In adult animals, immunity lasts for 12–15 months.

The drug does not have medicinal properties. It is used only as a prophylactic.

Biological features of the drug

The Multikan vaccine forms immunity in animals to various strains of diseases, which are listed in the table above. The resistance of immunity to strains of various viruses is developed within 20 days after the injection. Vaccinations are administered to animals strictly according to a specific schedule, starting from an early age.

After vaccination, the body’s resistance to viruses is up to 1 year, and for young individuals – no more than 8 months. Vaccination is carried out exclusively on healthy animals, so if a dog is sick, it is necessary to wait some time until it recovers. The Multikan vaccine contains the following components:

  • Rabies virus.
  • Coronavirus.
  • Parvovirus.
  • Adenovirus type 2.
  • Plague virus.
  • Leptospira.

The Multikan 6 vaccine does not contain only the rabies virus. Multikan 4 is one of the most ineffective injections, since it does not contain rabies and leptospira viruses.

It is important to know! Multikan is an injection that develops immunity against various viruses, but does not cure in any way if the dog is already sick with plague or rabies.

Active substances

Attenuated strains of the canine distemper virus, a strain of the rabies virus, coronavirus, parvovirus, canine adenovirus type 2, inactivated strains of Leptospira serogroups Canicola and Icterohemorrhagia.

Medicine for dogs: instructions

All properties of this immune defense product are indicated in the attached instructions for use.

Available in cardboard packages containing five doses. Each of them consists of two ampoules: one contains a “dry” component - a lyophilized yellowish substance, the other contains a suspension or liquid content (may have a pinkish tint or be colorless). When mixed, a ready-to-use vaccine is obtained; it must be used immediately.

Attention! The components of the vaccine are mixed immediately before administration to the animal; storage of the diluted solution (even under freezing conditions) is not allowed!

Form of the drug: bottles with lyophilisate (active ingredient) and liquid.
A bottle containing 1 ml of dry substance and a bottle with 2 ml of liquid are equal to one dose of medicine. The active substance is attenuated viral cultures.

Compound. Often on the packaging you can see the nomenclature: Multikan - 1, Multikan - 2, and then - 4, 7, 8. The numbers indicate the presence of weakened (attenuated) viruses in certain strains. The higher the number, the greater the number of them contained. The vaccine with the highest number - 8 - is distinguished by the fact that it contains, along with six components, an inactivated rabies virus.

The following are infectious diseases for which an immune response is produced as a result of the administration of the following types of drug:

  • 1 – against plague;
  • 2 – from parvovirus enteritis and adenovirus infection;
  • 4 – protects against enteritis caused by coronavirus, parvovirus, as well as against plague and adenovirus;
  • 6 – includes protection against the same diseases as 4, plus immunization against leptospirosis;
  • 7 – contains the same components as 4 and vaccination against dermatophytosis;
  • 8 – the vaccine contains components Multikan-6 and against rabies.

In practice, veterinarians most often use Multikan - 4 and 8.

Properties

The vaccine is administered to increase the dog's body's resistance to these specific infections. It consists mainly of live cultures (the exception is its component used against rabies in the Multikan - 8 variant: it contains “killed” viruses).

In this state, microorganisms are not able to reproduce, but when a vaccine is administered, the animal’s body perceives them as “foreign agents” and actively begins to produce antibodies in response. In other words, after 14 - 21 days, immunity is developed, providing protection for a year or more. In puppies, protection lasts a little less: this period is about 6 – 8 months.

Indications for use

The medicine is injected into puppies and adult dogs according to the vaccination schedule for immunity against a number of dangerous infections, including adenovirus infection, leptospirosis, distemper and others.

Note. Vaccination should be carried out under the supervision of specialists, preferably in veterinary clinics. A week after vaccination, it is recommended to show your pet to a veterinarian.

Directions for use and doses

Vaccinations are given subject to preliminary deworming two weeks in advance, as well as after flea treatment. Manipulations are carried out with sterility, otherwise complications may arise in the form of suppuration, abscesses, etc. Before vaccination, it is recommended to administer an antiallergic drug.

The liquid for preparing the solution should be heated to a temperature of 36 degrees. This is necessary for better absorption of the substance, as well as to avoid the appearance of post-injection “bumps”.

Dry and liquid components are mixed. To do this, the suspension is “taken away” with a syringe and injected into another bottle. The resulting suspension must be shaken vigorously for several seconds until it becomes homogeneous.

The injection is made into the inner thigh of the animal; the injection site can be pre-treated with medical alcohol.

Small decorative dogs and puppies are given 1 milliliter of vaccine, adults receive the drug in a volume of 2 ml. The remaining vaccine is disposed of.

Below is the graph.

  • Vaccination: the first time - at the age of 8 to 10 weeks, the second - three weeks later.
  • Revaccination: at one year (in some cases at 10 months), then annually in adult dogs.
  • Attention! Drugs with broken or missing labeling, expired, or those that have changed their characteristic color and properties, stored in conditions that do not meet the standards, are strictly prohibited to use!

Contraindications and adverse reactions

There are no special contraindications to the use of the vaccine. An exception may be individual intolerance to its components, puppies are less than 8 months old. You should not prick sick or weakened dogs. Side effects include swelling and slight hyperemia at the site where the injection was given, a temporary loss of appetite, a slight increase in temperature, they disappear after 1 - 2 days without treatment.

Instructions for use vaccination scheme for puppies and adult dogs

The vaccine Multican 6, 8 and 4 is mixed and administered in the same way. The package always contains two bottles. In one there is a homogeneous suspension of a pinkish tint, and in the other there is a yellow-pink microporous mass.

Most often, the dog vaccine Multican 8 is used at home, which provides protection, including against rabies, which cannot be said about other types of vaccinations.

Let's take a closer look at how the Multican 4 vaccine is used, where it is injected and what rules must be followed when using it:

  1. First you need to mix the contents of two bottles of the drug from the package (dry and liquid components) until a homogeneous consistency is obtained.
  2. Dogs allowed to be vaccinated must be at least 8-10 weeks old. The vaccine should be re-vaccinated after 3-4 weeks, and then revaccinated at the age of 10-12 months.
  3. In dogs, the injection is given in the thigh. The dose of the drug for an adult animal is 2 ml, and for a puppy – 1 ml.
  4. The injection syringe, like the needle, must be sterile. You can use a disposable syringe, disposing of it later in accordance with the rules of asepsis.
  5. Under no circumstances should you administer the drug to a dog if the integrity of its packaging has been damaged during transportation or storage. The same applies to the lack of identification marks and markings. In such cases, the vaccine must be disposed of.

Before vaccination, it is recommended to bring the vaccine to a temperature of 36-38 ℃ so that it is better absorbed.

The vaccination schedule depends on the age of the dog:

  1. The first vaccination is given to puppies that are 8-10 weeks old. Then the vaccination is repeated after 3-4 weeks. That is, for primary vaccination you need to do 2 procedures. Revaccination of a pet is necessary at the age of 10-12 months. The drug is administered intramuscularly into the thigh. The dose for small puppies is 1 ml, and for large breeds – 2 ml.
  2. Adult dogs are vaccinated against dangerous diseases every year. They need to do one injection with a dose of 2 ml.

Composition of the drug and release form

Multikan 4 (6,8) contains strains of parvovirus and coronovirus enteritis, plague, rabies, leptospira of the Canicola Icterohemorrhagia group and adenovirus type 2. Depending on the digital denomination, the composition of the strains differs. Multikan 4 is able to withstand four diseases, and the higher the digital denomination, the wider the composition drug.

The vaccine consists of two bottles with a volume of 1.0 and 2.0 ml, which contain different components. One bottle contains dry yellowish powder, and the other contains water to dissolve the dry contents. These two bottles equal one dose.

Contraindications for use

Before vaccinating dogs, you should make sure that your pet has no contraindications. The presence of contraindications in an animal can cause serious complications, which can result in the death of the pet. To prevent this from happening, it is important to know the following contraindications:

  1. If the dog is sick, then the injection is strictly contraindicated.
  2. When your pet is pregnant.
  3. If the dog has not yet recovered from illness, childbirth or surgery.
  4. When teeth change.
  5. If you are planning to have surgery on your dog.

If vaccination is carried out at a time when the animal’s body is weakened, this can lead to a number of complications:

  • increased body temperature;
  • exacerbation of diseases;
  • emergence of new diseases.

It is important to know! The first and second injections should be administered exclusively with the same drug.

Before vaccinating your dog, it is recommended to take it to a veterinarian for examination. The veterinarian will be able to confirm the pet’s readiness for vaccination, as well as carry out this procedure correctly. After the vaccine is administered, a note indicating that the appropriate procedure has been carried out must be placed in the animal’s passport.

Contraindications and side effects

There are no special contraindications for vaccination with Multican; it is prohibited to vaccinate sick dogs, as well as bitches during the gestation period and the first month after it. In addition, you should not mix the vaccine with any other drugs in the same syringe.

It is especially recommended to take a pause of 2 weeks after treating your dog with phosphorus-containing drugs. In addition, 2 weeks before the procedure, it is necessary to carry out mandatory anti-parasitic cleansing, since the presence of helminths in the body can reduce effectiveness. If there are parasites, the body will have to, instead of actively producing antibodies, simultaneously clean up the toxins that helminths secrete.

The Multikan vaccine is recognized as one of the safest domestic vaccines. She passed all the necessary checks and tests, during which no side effects were identified. It is extremely rare to develop an allergic reaction, which can be easily treated with antihistamines. There may also be slight swelling at the injection site, which will go away on its own over time.

Side effects

The vaccine is usually well tolerated by animals and does not cause side effects. Even with an overdose, it does not cause symptoms of plague, rabies, leptospirosis and diseases caused by adenoviruses, parvoviruses or coronaviruses.

A slight swelling may appear at the injection site. It usually goes away on its own and does not require special treatment. In rare cases, Multikan 8 causes allergic reactions in animals. In this case, it is necessary to use antiallergenic drugs.

Multikan vaccine price

It's no secret that all imported vaccines are much more expensive than our drugs. This one is no exception. Its price in the Russian Federation ranges from 200 to 220 rubles. And this takes into account the fact that foreign analogs are more likely to cause allergies and side effects.

The drug is dispensed without a prescription. However, it is necessary to comply with storage standards (if necessary), as well as transportation. If you purchased it in the summer, at the height of the heat, it should be transported in an ice bag and then kept in the refrigerator until use.

Precautions and special instructions

It is very important to sterilize syringes and needles before injecting Multikan-8 into a dog. You should also follow the deadlines and carry out vaccination in a timely manner, otherwise the effectiveness of this method of prevention will be significantly lower.

Important! Multikan-8 must be administered within two hours after both components have been combined. After this period, the use of the drug is prohibited. The solution is neutralized by boiling it for 10-15 minutes. If the packaging of the purchased vaccine was damaged, did not have a label, or there are foreign impurities in the solution, this product cannot be used. It is not allowed to inject the vaccine if the components were in cracked vials.

Analogues of the drug

There are analogues of Multikan from various manufacturers on sale. The difference between them is small, the composition does not differ significantly. It also includes strains of viruses - rabies, distemper, paraviral, coronavirus and adenoviral diseases. The following drugs are popular:

  • Vanguard.
  • Nobivak.
  • Biocan.
  • Hexadog.
  • Primodog.
  • Zurikan.

In addition, many other vaccines can be found. Each owner decides for himself which product is best for him to purchase for his dog, but the most positive reviews are written about Multican. The undoubted advantage of the drug is its availability. No need to think about where to go for medicine. The vaccine is sold not only in Moscow , but also in almost all pet stores in any city.
