Basic rules for mating Spitz dogs

Main features of mating oranges

Mating Pomeranian dogs is a rather serious task, which requires compliance with certain conditions and rules. Mistakes made can lead to defective or non-viable offspring, so pets must be mated correctly. Before you start, learn about Spitz mating, what it is and how it is done. You can also watch a video of the process.

Before breeding dogs, carefully study the features of the entire process.

Regardless of who is involved in mating - a Pomeranian or a German Spitz, adhere to certain rules:

  1. To ensure fertilization occurs accurately, mating is carried out twice during the estrus period. First, the animals are mated on the first day of ovulation, and then a day later. Before mating, take the animals for a walk, lock them alone in the room so that there are no irritating factors.
  2. If a German girl and a Pomeranian boy are involved in the process, his owner provides a stand for the pet so that he can reach the bitch’s loop.
  3. These dogs may have difficulty mating due to their fluffy coat, so trim each pet's genital area. This will make mating easier for them.

Important!

If you have decided to breed Pomeranians, it is worth considering that only purebred dogs should be mixed with other purebreds. But this alone is not enough. One of the mottos of established breeders with a good reputation is to do it for the betterment of the breed, and not just for the money. Therefore, the owner needs to show his animal to experts at the exhibition and receive assessments that allow him to participate in breeding programs. It also wouldn’t hurt to complete canine training courses if you are going to breed professionally. These recommendations should be taken very seriously.

How to determine the optimal time for mating

When breeding Spitz, take into account the optimal time for mating; the female and male must match each other. Many people do not know when it is possible to take a Spitz to a girl for the first time, and they make the most serious mistakes.

Attention ! Early mating can lead not only to defective offspring, but also to health problems for the bitch.

Early mating can harm the health of the bitch
. Both the bitch and the dog must be fully developed. Ideally, they will be at least one and a half years old, and preferably two. Despite the fact that physical signs of sexual maturity appear earlier, breeding Spitz dogs before they are one year old is strictly prohibited. It is at the age of two years that the germ cells are fully formed in Spitz dogs, which has a beneficial effect on reproductive function.

Before mating, find out how to determine the days of ovulation. Pay attention to the girl's condition. At this time, she becomes restless and demonstrates with all her appearance a desire for intercourse. Determining ovulation is easier if the dog's menstrual cycle is already established.

Where to start

There are several points that should be realistically assessed even before registering a nursery. And your own kennel and your own factory attachment must be registered - after all, we are talking about pedigree breeding, and not about the breeding of dogs of dubious breed quality.

Special education wouldn’t hurt at all: canine training, zootechnical training or veterinary training. As a compromise option, we can consider one-year courses that are conducted remotely by the Russian Cynological Federation in the specialty “cynologist-breeder”.

Defining the Goal

What kind of dogs do you want to breed and why? The question is not idle, and an answer like “to make a profit” is completely inappropriate here. There are at least three levels of breeding work - accordingly, the level of costs can be calculated. So, let’s determine the goal of your business project:

  • Breeding healthy purebred pet-class dogs - the costs are low, but there is always hope for a miracle: among the average dogs, a real show star can suddenly “shoot” (but this is only if you are very lucky);
  • breeding breed-class dogs is the optimal option in terms of cost-to-income ratio;
  • breeding show-class dogs is the most difficult, costly and risky path, but this is the case when the end justifies the means.

Basic expenses

For the first year and a half, you will have to forget about income and just constantly invest money in the future of your nursery. All that remains is to relax and enjoy communicating with wonderful dogs - and it’s worth it.

Start-up costs can only be estimated very roughly; here are the main cost items:

  • purchasing puppies for breeding - the cost of a purebred Pomeranian girl starts from 60 thousand rubles, and for the business to break even you will need at least four bitches;
  • the cost of raising one puppy (feeding, raising, grooming, veterinary services) - at least 150 thousand;
  • registration of necessary documentation - about 10 thousand;
  • preparation of premises for a nursery - from 30 to 100 thousand, depending on the level of decoration;
  • participation in exhibitions - on average 30 thousand for one exhibition, if it is not too far from your home;
  • genetic testing (a very expensive item, but mandatory if we are talking about professional breeding work) - at least a thousand (alas, not rubles, but euros).

Breed exhibitions are an obligatory stage of breeding

Please note that in the future you will continue to have regular expenses for the maintenance of each bitch, at least 100 thousand per year - this is if you are not a fan of exhibitions and your girl does not have serious health problems.

There are also one-time costs for each mating:

  • preparation of documents for mating and registration of litter - about 5 thousand;
  • medical examination of the bitch - at least 20 thousand;
  • payment to the owner of the dog and transportation costs - from 50 to 200 thousand (depending on the breed level, title and place of residence of the dog).

Is it possible to somehow minimize costs and risks? It's difficult, but there are options. You can purchase a bitch not as a puppy, but as an adult - this way you will avoid the costs of raising her and will be able to really evaluate the breed quality of the dog. Perhaps it makes sense to purchase a male dog for your kennel, but you need to correctly select him based on blood and exterior, and then spend a lot on exhibition promotion and titles.

Documentation

The list of documentation required for breeding activities is small, but each item in it is required:

  • pedigrees for producers - made on the basis of puppy metrics;
  • kennel club membership card - entry and annual fees are paid;
  • kennel certificate and factory prefix - issued if you have at least one breeding bitch in your possession;
  • breeding card (for a female) and breeding certificate (for a male) - issued and regularly updated based on the results of successful participation in exhibitions;
  • permission for mating;
  • puppy cards - issued based on the results of litter activation.

Features of choosing dogs for breeding

The choice of future producers depends entirely on your idea of the breed, practical experience and financial capabilities. The main requirement is that dogs must be healthy and have good heredity. As for the exterior features and interesting bloodlines, these points remain at the discretion and conscience of each individual breeder.

Future parents should be a good match both in blood and in appearance

Preparing premises for breeding dogs

It is advisable to allocate a separate room for the kennel and specially equip it, taking into account that not only adult dogs, but also puppies will live here. What are the main points to keep in mind:

  • floors should not be slippery;
  • the room should be protected from drafts, kept clean and at an optimal temperature;
  • remove all dangerous or toxic objects from the room;
  • each animal needs a separate place with a bed, feeding bowls and a sanitary area;
  • a special birthing area must be equipped for puppies and their mother.

Dogs should feel comfortable indoors and not disturb each other

The necessary conditions

To get strong offspring without culling, pay attention to these points:

  1. Health. Use only healthy pets so that the puppies do not have any pathologies. Eliminate all diseases, including weight problems, three months before mating.
  2. Consultation with a veterinarian. Be sure to have your dogs examined at a veterinary clinic. Take the necessary tests. If you find a problem, fix it.
  3. Inquiries. Both dogs must have vaccination certificates. Check the documents confirming the absence of infections if there are dogs from different kennels.
  4. Documentation. Look at pedigree documents and exhibition diplomas if you plan to breed elite Spitz dogs.
  5. Weight. Animals must weigh within normal limits. It is optimal that the weight value is in the middle of the parameters established by the standard.

Healthy puppy
If you follow these rules, you will get healthy puppies and healthy parents.

Main stages

Despite the fact that Pomeranians go through puberty for quite a long time, do not rush into mating. If even one stage of breeding is disrupted, the quality of the puppies may deteriorate, or they may simply not appear.

Preparation

When preparing for breeding, decide whether you need puppies and whether you can sell them. Please note that pregnancy and childbirth can undermine the health of the bitch, which will lead to large financial expenses for the pet’s health. If you're not ready for this, don't have pets.

It is important to provide pregnant and lactating bitches with proper nutrition. If poorly cared for, puppies may be born defective, which will affect the price.

Dog selection

When choosing dogs for mating, they must not have any physical or mental illness. The weight of a male dog should be 300-500 grams less than that of a female dog. Ideally, at least one of the dogs has already participated in mating and understood what they wanted from it.

Before mating, select dogs

If previously the producers produced defective offspring, re-breeding should be abandoned.

When choosing partners, color does not matter. Often puppies of a different color appear from same-colored parents due to genetic data.

Spitz breeding - pitfalls

First of all, you need to remember that this dog breed is difficult to breed. The main problems arise due to the miniature size. Childbirth is difficult and dangerous for mother and puppies. In addition, there are usually 2-3 puppies in a litter, and not all of them may be a perfect match for the breed. It is also important to take into account that your pet belongs to the breeding class, that is, you have a specially selected Spitz for breeding. Otherwise, you will not get offspring above the pet class.

Keep in mind that you will need a lot of free time and money to visit the veterinarian during pregnancy and select a diet for a pregnant dog. It is important to monitor her condition and well-being and be present at the birth, to be able to quickly take her to the hospital if something goes wrong. For Pomeranians, caesarean sections are not uncommon.

Next, the tiny puppies will need attention. Due to their small size at birth, they are susceptible to stomach and intestinal problems and malnutrition. Dehydration occurs very quickly. And do not fall into the false belief that mating is necessary for a dog’s health. There is no scientific evidence for this for dogs of any gender.

On the contrary, without knowing the joy of reproduction, male dogs live quietly throughout their lives and do not experience any discomfort. They show a reserved interest in the opposite sex. If a boy has once taken part in mating, this interest increases significantly and interferes with a peaceful life; he is constantly looking for a mate, becomes less obedient and even aggressive if he does not get what he wants. Therefore, before the boy’s first mating, think about whether you can provide him with regular sex life in the future.

Pomeranian breeding

For a Pomeranian to have a successful date, the young man must weigh less than the girl, and she should not be significantly heavier than 2.5 kg. This is a prerequisite for the birth of puppies that are not too small and not too large and are approximately the same size.

German Spitz breeding

For German Spitz, the rules are not so strict; the size of the female and male may vary. In addition, if the male is a Pomeranian, then there is a high probability of the birth of dogs belonging to the Pomeranian variety of the breed.

Estrus

To understand what day to breed a Pomeranian, analyze your dog's estrus cycle. Estrus usually lasts about 22 days. Before the heat (5-12 days), the bitch becomes playful, tries to attract males, but does not allow them to approach her.

To determine estrus, blot the loop with a cotton pad every morning. As soon as drops of blood appear, get ready for mating.

During heat the bitch becomes restless

During heat, the bitch actively makes contact with the male. Usually on the 13th day mating occurs.

Mating rules

For mating to be successful, prepare for it in advance. This will help avoid injury to miniature Pomeranians. The event is held on the territory of the dog. It is there that he feels confident and ready for reproductive work.

Feed the animals no later than 6 hours before the process, and immediately after intercourse give the dogs treats.

To guarantee a good result, control the entire process. When the mounting is successful and the bitch squeals, the male will begin to actively move and ejaculation will occur. Hold the bitch firmly at this moment so that she does not jerk, otherwise the seed will be released empty.

After the seed has entered the bitch’s uterus, the male’s penis enlarges, and the girl’s vagina narrows, forming a “lock.” There is no need to try to separate them. They should remain in this position for half an hour to an hour. It is at this moment that fertilization occurs.

Castle during mating

Mating process

The mating begins when the bitch is ready; she raises her tail high and spreads her hind legs. The owner must fix the position by kneeling in front of her and taking her by the collar. If the male is inexperienced, he may initially mount on the sides, in which case he will have to be helped. To do this, the male dog must be gently guided in the right direction, touching the chest or back.

The owner of the bitch should hold his dog under the belly with one hand, aiming for the male. When the male makes the correct mounting, his front paws clasp the hind limbs of the bitch, and he begins to act more actively, his movements are jerky and frequent. If a bitch mates for the first time, most likely she will report the hit of a male by squealing.

After the male releases sperm, the female must not be given the opportunity to make sudden movements. Most often, dogs are bred with a “lock”, the male’s genitals are enlarged, and the female’s muscles contract, as a result of which she holds the male tightly. Therefore, you can remove his front paws from the dog’s body and place him next to him. If you turn your back paw over, they will stand side by side. Since the “lock” can last from 15 to 40 minutes, you need to stay nearby all this time, avoiding sudden movements.

After the dogs disperse, some liquid may spill; this is a normal process. If the mating was without a “lock” or it was short-lived, the bitch should not sit down for several minutes so that the sperm does not leak out. The owner of the male dog is required to check the condition of his pet, the organ must be tucked into a bag, you can wash it with water, and give the animals something to drink. If the agreement is only for two matings, then it is better to carry out a control mating after 48 hours. Usually the next time goes easier, since the dogs have gotten to know each other.

Pregnancy

If the mating was successful, it is necessary to monitor the Spitz's pregnancy. The stomach changes from day to day. By tracking this, you can understand how the process is proceeding.

During the first twenty days, it is impossible to determine pregnancy by external signs. Over the next 10 days, the dog may begin to experience toxicosis, and after five weeks external changes will appear - the volume of the tummy will increase, the nipples will become more saturated in color. By the eighth week the fruits begin to move. Immediately a week before giving birth, the dog’s temperature begins to fluctuate and mood swings appear.

Spitz dogs don't often give birth to more than three puppies.

Typically, Spitz dogs give birth to 1 to 3 offspring. But there are also fertile females, they can even produce up to 6 puppies.

How to deliver a baby

Childbirth often proceeds normally and does not require intervention. The main thing is to simply be there for the bitch when this happens to support and reassure her. If the puppy does not appear after 2.5 hours from the start of contractions, call a veterinarian immediately.

Don't be scared! After each fetus, an afterbirth comes out, which the bitch eats to maintain her health. But don't let her eat more than two to avoid upset.

Think before you breed Spitz dogs and adhere to the stated rules. This will avoid mistakes and keep producers healthy.
