"Serenia": instructions for use of a veterinary drug

Dosage form

In veterinary practice, Serenia is used in two forms: tablets and solution for injection .

The solution for injection contains the active ingredient maropitant citrate - 10 mg and auxiliary components: metacresol, sulfobutyl ether and water for injection. Externally, the medicine is a light yellow liquid.

Serenia tablets are intended for oral use with the active component maropitant citrate and excipients - stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, lactose, croscarmellose sodium and dye E110.

The dosage form is round, yellow tablets in dosages of 100 mg, 150 mg, 375 mg and 1000 mg with a dividing groove and the Pfizer logo.

"Serenia" refers to low-toxic drugs and safe veterinary drugs . Residues of the drug are excreted from the animal’s body through urine and feces.

With repeated doses, the medicine accumulates in the body. Dogs and cats easily take the drug. "Sereniya" has a strong therapeutic and preventive effect.

Price

The cost of tablets and injection solution will vary depending on the place of sale, as well as the dosage. Approximate prices for the medicine Sereniya in veterinary pharmacies: Solution for injection in a 20 ml bottle - from 4700 to 5100 rubles. Tablets 160 mg, 4 pieces - from 976 rubles. Tablets 60 mg, 4 pieces – from 324 rubles. Tablets 24 mg, 4 pieces - from 324 rubles. Tablets 16 mg, 4 pieces – from 284 rubles. It is worth noting that some veterinary pharmacies, where you can order medicine online, offer tablets individually, which is convenient for cat owners. On average, the price for one tablet according to the dosage will be from 71 to 250 rubles.

Instructions for use

Before using the drug "Serenia", you must carefully read the instructions and consult a specialist. The use of the drug without the advice of a veterinarian is allowed only for the purpose of preventing nausea, gagging and vomiting in a dog or cat.

If your dog gets motion sickness while being transported by car, you should start taking the medicine 1-2 days before the trip.

The drug is used orally in the following order:

  • To prevent vomiting and the gag reflex during motion sickness, 8 mg of the drug per 1 kg of animal body weight is used. The medicine is given one hour before the trip as a one-time use. Repeated use is possible after a day, no more than two times;
  • for various pathologies, 1 mg of solution is prescribed per 10 kg of dog or cat weight once a day. This is due to the fact that Serenia has a cumulative effect. The use of the drug is allowed for 5 days;
  • The tablets are given to the dog whole or mixed into food. The injection is placed subcutaneously in the withers area.

To maintain the therapeutic effect, the dosage frequency must be strictly observed. If for any reason a dose was missed, the course should be started again according to the instructions.

Analogues of the drug

Sereniya is an effective and fairly safe drug against nausea and vomiting. The only disadvantage of this product is its high price - a 20-ml bottle of injection solution costs about five thousand rubles, and a package of four tablets costs about a thousand.

Serenia tablets can be purchased individually

True, in veterinary pharmacies you can usually buy tablets individually, and in some pharmacies they offer to buy not the entire bottle of solution, but to draw the required dose into a sterile syringe - but in this case there is a high risk of purchasing an expired product.

There are no complete analogues of Serenia. However, there is a fairly large selection of antiemetic drugs, primarily intended for people. After consulting with a veterinarian, you can choose a suitable remedy for your pet, which will cost significantly less than Serenia.

Pain relief for a doomed cat. Serenia relieves pain?

June 14, 2019

Hello! Cry from the heart! Help with advice. The cat is 17 years old. A few months ago the cat got sick. He was vomiting bile, the cat stopped eating and drinking. I've lost a lot of weight. We took him to the doctor and did an ultrasound. An ultrasound revealed a tumor in the liver and spleen. The doctor said that we have 2 options. Either put the cat to sleep or put him on hormones. We chose hormones. As a result, the cat was given IV drips and put on a hormone (dexamethasone). After the hormone, the cat came to life, began to eat and returned to its previous rhythm of life. The doctor said that the cat would now not be able to live without dexamethasone and would now have to be given it for life. In general, the cat was injected with dexamethasone for 5 months and we had no problems. They injected him every other day. Sometimes once every 2-3 days. The cat felt well, was active and ate well. But about 3 weeks ago we started having problems. The cat lost his appetite and began to experience constant constipation. At first we were saved by Vaseline oil, but in the last week Vaseline oil stopped helping. The cat cannot go to the toilet for the fifth day and pushes to no avail. Laxatives no longer help. Even an enema and castor oil didn't help. The cat also began to feel sick. All the food and water eaten came back out. Yesterday I took the cat to the hospital. In the hospital the cat got even worse. Apparently he got very nervous, began to choke and roll his eyes. The doctor said that the cat was already dying and had no chance. The cat was placed in an oxygen chamber, given an IV and he calmed down a little. They didn’t give us an ultrasound. The doctor said that the cat is in critical condition and should not be disturbed now (otherwise he will simply die). As a result, they offered to euthanize the cat. They said that most likely he already has a tumor in his intestines, so he cannot go to the toilet. In general, we were sent home to die. They gave me 4 syringes with Sirenia and an IV. They told me to make IVs at home and give Serenia an injection every day. The doctor explained that graying will relieve pain and relieve the cat’s suffering. They also told me to force feed him. I read on the Internet that sireniya is an antiemetic drug! Is he really able to relieve pain? Please advise what we should do? The cat has weakened and is still lying down. For the most part, I never went to the toilet. He lost a lot of weight, weighs only 1.6 kg. I can't watch him suffer! I cry all day long. Help with advice. Is it worth installing Serenia? what am I supposed to do? maybe the cat still has a chance? Also wondering: why force-feed a cat if it has persistent constipation?

Contraindications

The use of the drug "Serenia" is prohibited for pregnant and lactating dogs and cats . The product can only be used in exceptional cases, if the animal experiences debilitating vomiting or repeated bouts of nausea. The drug can only be taken under the supervision of a veterinarian.

The product is not used for productive animals .

It is not recommended to use the drug "Serenia" if animals are intolerant to the components of the drug.

The medicine should not be given to puppies under 16 weeks of age .

When to use

According to the instructions for use, Sereniya is prescribed to cats for vomiting of any origin. The medication is successfully used in the following cases:

  • in case of chemical poisoning;
  • for food poisoning;
  • when motion sickness occurs during transportation;
  • after anesthesia;
  • during chemotherapy;
  • for oncology;
  • with pathologies of the food system accompanied by vomiting.

Note! The drug can also be used for cystitis, but only as prescribed by a doctor.

Antiemetic injections are ideal for cases where your pet vomits when something gets into their stomach. The use of tablets in this case is ineffective due to the fact that the active substance does not have time to act before the urge to vomit occurs. In this regard, they are given to cats only to prevent motion sickness, that is, before a trip. In other cases, injections should be preferred.

Reviews

I have several dogs with which I periodically travel to exhibitions in other cities. Previously, such trips caused great inconvenience due to the fact that pets got sick in a car or plane. Medicines purchased at the pharmacy were ineffective. The veterinarian advised the use of Serenia. The medicine helps well against attacks of vomiting, it is given a few days before the trip, it can be given along with anthelmintic drugs. One bottle of injection is enough for a long time.

Natalia

I started using the drug before going to exhibitions. A very effective and efficient product, it helps well during long trips. I use it together with sorbents. Thanks to the Sereniya product, trips go unnoticed.

Svetlana

I have been using Sereniya for a long time, since my dog does not digest homemade food well. "Serenia" has replaced other antiemetics; we use it together with drugs to normalize digestion.

Indications for use in cats

The main purpose of the drug for veterinary use Sereniya is to eliminate vomiting in cats from motion sickness during their transportation. Also, symptoms of motion sickness, against which the use of medication has a certain degree of effectiveness, are:

  • nervous excitement;
  • increased salivation;
  • belching;
  • tremor of the limbs.

In addition, this drug is given to animals for preventive purposes.

Serenia is also used to relieve vomiting symptoms in the following pathological conditions:

  • intoxication due to poisoning;
  • gastrointestinal diseases;
  • after anesthesia.

It is important to understand that in the presence of serious diseases, monotherapy with Serenia is not effective. The drug only eliminates vomiting without affecting the causes of the disease. In some cases (poisoning), suppressing the gag reflex can even cause harm to the animal.

Sereniya does not act on the cause of the disease, the drug only eliminates vomiting as a symptom

Cost of the product

The price of 1 bottle with 20 injection mixtures ranges from 4,500 to 4,900 rubles. The cost of 1 pack of tablets varies in the range of 300–450 rubles. Some veterinary pharmacies and pet stores practice selling medications individually (70–80 rubles each). It is not advisable to purchase a 20 ml bottle, since most of the medication has to be thrown away, so some veterinary clinics offer the purchase of the drug by the bottle.

In this case, the medication is immediately drawn into a measuring syringe.

Composition and release form of the drug

Sereniya is available in the form of an injection solution and tablets, and each form has its own application features.

As for the composition, the main active ingredient in the drug is maropitant citrate, the task of which is to stop vomiting in animals. Among other substances, it contains metacresol (a strong antiseptic) and sodium cyclodestrin (increases the solubility of the macronutrient).

Injection solution

The solution is a clear liquid with a slight yellowish tint. It goes on sale packaged in 20 ml glass bottles, sealed hermetically with rubber stoppers, which are rolled up with aluminum caps on top. The manufacturer does not produce bottles of other sizes.

Pills

The drug in tablet form is marketed in four different versions. Their composition is the same, but the difference lies in the mass and concentration of the main active ingredient, as well as additional components. Cats can be given 100 and 150 mg tablets containing 16 and 24 mg of maropitant.

Sereniya tablets, which have a yellow tint, have one advantage - the content of the active substance is stamped on one side, which eliminates the risk of exceeding the dosage (even if the packaging is lost). In addition, for more convenient separation of the tablet, a special dividing strip is provided.

Each package contains an aluminum foil blister containing four tablets.

What are the possible side effects of serenia in dogs?

If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop giving the drug and seek emergency veterinary medical attention: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; hives); sudden onset of diarrhea; vomit; shock; convulsions; coma. Other less serious side effects may occur. Side effects other than those listed in this leaflet may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effects that seem unusual or particularly bothersome to your pet.

Storage conditions

  • It is important to put blisters with tablets in the manufacturer’s box. Since sunlight has a negative effect on the drug.
  • Normal storage temperature is +5 - +25 degrees.
  • Always keep the medicine out of the reach of children and animals.
  • Serenium injection solution can be stored at a temperature not exceeding +30 degrees Celsius.
  • After opening, the bottle should be placed on the top shelf of the refrigerator. An open bottle should be stored for no longer than 1 month.

Serenium injection - injection solution

  1. Examine your pet carefully in the withers area; there should be no wounds or irritation on the skin. An examination must be carried out, since medicine that gets on the skin can only aggravate the problem.
  2. Wear disposable gloves.
  3. Open the bottle with the preparation sereniya, then wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol wipe.
  4. Poke the stopper of the syringe with the needle and draw up the solution (use insulin syringes, since they are the most convenient way to measure the required volume of medicine).
  5. Take the mustache in the withers area, and then with your other hand insert the needle into the resulting fold.
  6. Serenia should be introduced carefully and without haste.
  7. At the end of the procedure, you need to take out the needle and then pet the cat to calm it down.

If you are afraid to give an injection to your pet or you do not have experience, then it is better to leave this work to professionals. There are specialists not only in veterinary clinics, but also in some veterinary pharmacies.

How it affects the body

When it enters the cat’s body, thanks to the circulatory system, the active substance quickly spreads throughout the body. The active substance (maropitant citrate) is able to effectively block receptors at the peripheral and central levels of the central nervous system.

Therefore, in cats, the unpleasant gag reflex is suppressed, and accordingly, vomiting and nausea stop.

Injections act approximately 2 times faster compared to tablets. This is due to the fact that maropitant citrate immediately binds to plasma proteins and spreads throughout the cat’s body.
