What should be the normal temperature for small breed dogs? Detailed answer

Factors affecting temperature

The body temperature of pets is not the same as that of humans. Normal body temperature in dogs can range from 37.5 degrees and reach 39, in rare cases up to 39.3. This indicator is not constant throughout life and depends not only on the breed and size of the animal, but also on the environmental temperature, emotional state and physical activity of the animal.

To answer the question of what temperature is considered normal in a dog at a given time, several factors must be taken into account:

Body temperature in dogs depends on several other factors and can fluctuate slightly. The thermometer reading may increase by 0.5−1 degrees in the following cases:

  1. Hot weather.
  2. Severe stress or anxiety.
  3. Eating.
  4. Estrus.

Low temperature for physiological reasons is observed in the following cases:

  1. The postoperative period, for example, during the animal’s recovery from anesthesia.
  2. During pregnancy, a few days before giving birth.

What should be the normal temperature for small breed dogs? Detailed answer

If you have decided to get a pet, then you need to understand that the pet will require constant care for its health.

One of the main indicators of a dog’s well-being is its body temperature, because even a slight increase in temperature can serve as the first sign that something is wrong with the pet’s body.

This is especially true for small breed dogs , which are more susceptible to various diseases. That is why, in order to promptly identify pathologies present in the animal’s body, you need to know with utmost precision what temperature norm is inherent in a particular breed.

Signs of deviation from the norm

With rare exceptions, there is no need to measure the temperature of a healthy pet. It is recommended to monitor it in breeding puppies, before exhibitions, during pregnancy and during vaccinations. In all other cases, if the dog is cheerful and active, you should not create an additional stressful situation for it with this manipulation.

If the pet’s behavior and condition has changed, or suspicious symptoms have appeared, it is necessary to measure the animal’s temperature.

Signs of fever include the following symptoms:

Often the main signs of fever include a hot and dry nose. In fact, you shouldn't rely on this indicator. Dogs' noses are always dry and hot during and after sleep. However, even in the case of extreme heat, it can sometimes remain moist and cool. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to this indicator if dryness of the tip of the nose is not observed occasionally, but over a long period of time.

Low temperature also has its own signs:

  • Shiver.
  • Shallow breathing.
  • Slow heartbeat.
  • Muscle tension.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Low blood pressure.

Symptoms of high and low temperature

Signs of a high fever in a dog:

    the dog has no appetite, vomiting; lethargy and weakness; sleep throughout the day; desire to be alone; nose dry and hot; gums are warm, dry and bright brick-colored; the inside of the ear and paw pads are significantly hotter than your palm or cheek; the lymph nodes in the armpits and groin are swollen and hot.

Signs of low temperature:

    lethargy and drowsiness; problems with coordination and reaction.

When a dog exhibits these symptoms, the temperature should be taken . You can do this yourself; you don’t have to go to the doctor right away. In a situation where the dog also exhibits symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and convulsions, you cannot put it off for a minute: you should immediately take it to the doctor.

Measuring temperature at home

If your dog shows signs of illness, you need to check its temperature. You can do this at home yourself, before going to the vet. For this procedure you will need a regular or electronic thermometer, Vaseline and a lot of goodies.

How can you measure a dog’s temperature at home so that the stress from this manipulation does not provoke an even greater increase in the thermometer readings? It is necessary to lay the pet on its side, pet it and calm it down, while giving it its favorite treats

. Animals are very susceptible to human intonation, so you need to speak to them as calmly and gently as possible.

It is better that 2 people take part in the process of determining temperature indicators. The one who enjoys the greatest trust and love of the pet should be closer to its face, stroking, calming and feeding. The second person's task is as follows:

  1. Lubricate the end of the thermometer with Vaseline or other greasy cream, having previously disinfected it.
  2. Gently lift the tail up without sudden movements.
  3. Insert a thermometer into the rectum, to a depth of about 2 centimeters.
  4. You need to hold the mercury thermometer for 5 minutes, and the electronic one until the beep sounds.
  5. At the end of the procedure, the measuring device is carefully removed and then disinfected.

It is important to ensure that during manipulation the animal does not make sudden movements and does not injure itself. Once the reading is completed, your pet should be rewarded appropriately with treats and praise.

Determining fever without a thermometer

When you don't have a thermometer at hand, you can determine your fever without one. Dogs have places on their bodies that signal danger to a vigilant owner. Unfortunately, this is impossible to do in cats.

If you suspect a fever, your four-legged friend should be checked:

    Gums

    . In normal conditions, the gums are moist and have a light pink color. Fever can turn them a rich red color and make them almost dry.

  1. Inguinal and axillary cavities
    . Animals do not have sweat glands in these areas, so during a fever these areas will be hot.
  2. Ears
    . The ears are penetrated by a huge number of blood vessels located close to the surface. If your body temperature rises, your blood vessels dilate and your ears become hotter than usual. When only one ear is hot, this most likely indicates an inflammatory process in the organ itself.

First aid if the norm is exceeded

The main thing that a pet owner should remember is that in case of any temperature deviations, the pet must be shown to a veterinarian. If it is not possible to quickly get to a doctor, and the indicators have reached a critical limit, you should try to reduce the dog’s body temperature yourself.

Reducing the temperature with medication is not recommended. In addition to the fact that this will blur the clinical picture and make it difficult for the veterinarian to quickly make a correct diagnosis, it can also harm the dog. Non-veterinary antipyretics act differently on animals and can poison the pet, cause internal bleeding and even death.

Reducing the temperature with medications is only permissible if the indicator has reached a critical limit of 40.5 degrees and does not fall. To do this, prepare a mixture in one syringe from solutions of no-shpa, diphenhydramine and analgin in a ratio of 1:1:1. The dose must be calculated based on the fact that 0.1 ml of each drug should be per 1 kg of body weight. That is, an injection of 6 ml is prepared for an average dog weighing 20 kg.

Diphenhydramine and no-spa are drugs that are approved for the treatment of animals. While analgin can have side effects. In case of a threat to the pet's life, the side effects of analgin are not taken into account.

In other cases, you can reduce the temperature in the following ways:

  1. Apply ice wrapped in a towel to the paws, neck and inner thighs.
  2. If it is not possible to apply ice, find the coldest place for your pet, for example, in the bathroom on the tiles and place it there.
  3. Give water to drink, but not ice water.
  4. Wet the paw pads and belly with cool water.

Such actions usually help reduce the indicator by 0.5 degrees and make it easier to transport the animal to the veterinarian.

Helping your pet with a low temperature

If the temperature drops below 37 degrees, the first thing you need to do is warm up the dog. To do this, you need to put her in a warm place and wrap her in a wool blanket. Prepare a warm heating pad, the temperature of which should be from 38 to 38.5 degrees, and apply it to the paw pads. If the dog does not refuse to drink, give it warm broth or milk.

It is very important to prevent your pet from becoming hypothermic. If possible, you need to call a veterinarian at home. If this is not possible, the animal can be transported to a doctor only after the temperature has approached normal.

Emergency decrease in body temperature in a dog

To alleviate the animal’s condition before treatment and avoid dehydration, a number of simple steps

:

  • provide fresh air access to the room where the animal is located;
  • try to lower the air temperature in the room by 1-2 degrees;
  • protect the animal from exposure to direct sunlight;
  • wet a towel in cold water and apply it to the dog’s stomach;
  • provide access to drinking water.

Medications _

allowed to be used when the temperature rises above 40 degrees. An intramuscular injection of analgin, no-shpa, and diphenhydramine is effective. You can also use one fifth of a tablet of paracetomol, diphenhydramine, analgin.

Pediatric antipyretic medications are used for puppies.

It ranges from 38 to 39 degrees Celsius. Small deviations are possible, both positive and negative. If it begins to fall significantly below the permissible values, then you need to urgently take your pet to the clinic.

Low temperature in a dog

– hypothermia, characteristic of many diseases. Like, this condition can be dangerous. After providing first aid, be sure to take your pet to a veterinarian for examination.

An electronic thermometer is best for measuring your dog's temperature. Animals do not really like this procedure, so it is better to minimize the time it takes.

If the dog is very frightened by the upcoming manipulations, then calm it down. You can cheer up your pet by speaking to him in a gentle voice or offering him a tasty treat.

  • disinfect the thermometer with a disinfecting solution;
  • lubricate the tip of the thermometer with thick baby cream or vaseline oil;
  • insert the thermometer into the dog’s anus, having previously secured it;
  • After the procedure, praise your pet.

Disinfect the thermometer again and put it away; subsequently it can be used again for both animals and people.

Veterinary procedures

When a pet with a fever is admitted to the hospital, the veterinarian most often conducts the appointment in the following sequence:

  1. History taking and clinical examination.
  2. Blood test and, if necessary, urine test.
  3. Ultrasound and X-ray.
  4. If necessary, a biopsy.
  5. Establishing diagnosis.
  6. Prescription of treatment.

First of all, the doctor should always conduct a clinical examination and only then begin to reduce the temperature with medications.

A temperature below 37 degrees indicates that the animal’s body is exhausted from fighting the disease, and the immune system is in the stage of suppression. In this case, resuscitation measures are already needed. Depending on the symptoms that accompany hypothermia, warming treatment is prescribed:

  1. Paw rubbing and massages.
  2. "Warming" droppers.
  3. Stimulation of the cardiovascular system.

Warming therapy should be carried out until the animal’s body temperature is independently maintained within normal limits for 15 hours. And general therapy, depending on the disease, will include:

It is impossible to ignore those signs that are unusual for the normal state of a four-legged friend. Any deviation, even the slightest, can signal a dangerous disease that threatens the dog’s life. The sooner an animal is shown to a doctor, the greater its chances for a speedy and complete recovery.

Attention, TODAY only!

An important indicator that a dog is feeling well is its body temperature. Of course, just like in people, performance may vary depending on individual characteristics. That is why it is worth measuring the dog’s temperature for the first time in a calm state, in order to further navigate the situation based on these data.

There is no need to panic when an animal’s temperature rises, as this may not be caused by illness, but by weather conditions, physical activity or weight changes. But nevertheless, this can also signal inflammatory processes in the body.

Patella luxation

A hereditary pathology in which the position of the kneecap is displaced outward or inward relative to the normal position. Depending on the stage of the disease, the lameness characteristic of it can be constant or intermittent. Only an orthopedic doctor can diagnose the disease by examining the dog, assessing the nature of lameness and positioning of the limb, palpation and radiographs. Drug treatment gives a temporary effect, the main treatment is surgery.

How to measure a dog's temperature correctly

A regular thermometer is quite suitable for this, but, of course, it is best to use an electronic device, as it gives the value faster. The dog must have its own thermometer, personal, since the temperature is measured rectally; the use of a thermometer by other family members is strictly prohibited due to hygiene rules.

The tip of the thermometer is lubricated with Vaseline so as not to cause damage to the pet and reduce stress, since, of course, your four-legged friend will not be very happy with such a procedure.

If you have not had experience measuring a dog’s temperature before, then it would be better to put the animal on its side, lift its tail and insert the thermometer into the anus 1.5-2 cm. An electronic thermometer will give readings in a minute, but a mercury thermometer will have to hold for 3-5 minutes. After the procedure and during it, it is important to reassure the animal and explain that this is being done for its own good. Be sure to offer your pet a treat after taking the temperature.

Associated warning signs

To recognize the disease at an early stage, measuring temperature is not enough. You should know additional symptoms that indicate various pathological conditions:

  • frequent urination;
  • frequent vomiting;
  • weakness;
  • loss of appetite;
  • out-of-season heavy shedding;
  • cloudiness of the eyes;
  • nasal discharge;
  • recurrent limb spasms;
  • bad breath;
  • change in urine color (red, brown);
  • frequent hoarse breathing;
  • thirst;
  • intense salivation;
  • bluish or white tongue;
  • diarrhea, especially with blood;
  • unnatural sleeping position;
  • insomnia;
  • restless behavior;
  • lameness.

Observe your pet's behavior and mood. Obvious changes in the usual way of life should alarm. If the dog is lethargic, apathetic, refuses to play and work, and does not eat, you need to contact a veterinarian.

Temperature is one of the main indicators of the well-being of both people and animals.

Its increase or decrease indicates that something is wrong with the pet.

What temperature is considered normal for a dog? How to measure it at home, and what to do if it is very low or high?

The normal value is different for adults and small puppies.

In dwarf breeds it may be slightly increased, and this will not be considered a deviation. The normal temperature in dogs is presented in the table, which contains average values for different age and size groups.

A dog's body temperature is normal if it is within the range shown in the table.

In addition, there are additionally permissible deviations for different situations.
Temperature in a dog: the norm can increase under stress (up to 0.3⁰C), on hot days, after intense training, during estrus.
In bitches before giving birth, on the contrary, it decreases by 0.5-2⁰С.

Important!

Such changes do not indicate the presence of disease or illness.

There is an opinion that temperature can be determined by the nose, but this is a misconception. Sometimes the ears and groin feel hot to the touch when it's hot, but you can't rely on these signs alone.

Fever

If the thermometer reading is 38-39 degrees, then everything is in order, but if the dog’s temperature is 40-41 degrees, this indicates heat. An elevated temperature itself signals that the body has switched to infection-fighting mode and is trying to get rid of viruses or bacteria on its own. Harmful cells die at high temperatures, but if the indicators are already too high, this indicates that the body cannot cope, and therefore it needs help. Thus, what temperature dogs should have depends on the nature of the inflammatory process.

Main reasons for temperature changes

It is not enough to just know what temperature your dog should be. It is also important to consider the reasons for its change. This will determine whether you should immediately seek help from a veterinary clinic, or whether you can solve the problem yourself by eliminating the cause.

Water helps regulate temperature in hot weather

Promotion

The most common case is increased body temperature (hyperthermia). Fever is a natural reaction of the body to the following ailments:

  • virus, infection;
  • stress;
  • sepsis;
  • poisoning;
  • heart disease;
  • sunstroke;
  • cutting teeth (in puppies);
  • recent birth;
  • allergy;
  • hormonal imbalances.

Attention! Dogs of medium and large breeds are most prone to fever.

But hyperthermia is not always a sign of illness. Sometimes this indicates unfavorable external conditions affecting the animal.

Demotion

When talking about changes in body temperature, hyperthermia is often meant. But hypothermia (low temperature) is no less dangerous. Its causes are conventionally divided into two groups. Each should be considered separately.

The first group is non-medical reasons. A good example is frostbite. The dog was exposed to the cold for a long time, so its body temperature dropped. To combat this cause of hypothermia, you simply need to gradually warm the animal.

The second group is medical reasons. They are caused by disturbances in the functioning of the body such as:

  • hormonal imbalances, problems with the thyroid gland;
  • anorexia;
  • traumatic brain injury;
  • liver pathologies;
  • chemical poisoning;
  • other pathologies that cause decreased immunity.

You won’t be able to deal with such ailments on your own, so you need to urgently call the veterinary clinic.

What to do if your dog has a fever

First of all, you should go to a veterinary hospital, and if it’s cold outside, then it’s better to call a doctor at home. To accurately determine the causes, the doctor will most likely prescribe the following tests and perform the following procedures:

  • Analysis of urine.
  • Blood analysis.
  • Hemogram.
  • Blood smear.
  • Test for the presence of diseases of the immune system.
  • X-rays of light.
  • Biopsy (if necessary).

Based on the test results, the veterinarian will be able to determine what exactly is wrong with the animal and prescribe the appropriate course of treatment, as well as explain what temperature should be in dogs of this breed.

How to bring down the temperature?

What to do if your pet has a fever? If the indicator value is very high (above 40⁰C), the best solution would be to take the pet to a veterinary clinic.

Fever is especially dangerous for puppies - metabolic processes in their bodies proceed much faster.

What to do if your dog has a fever, but veterinarian help is not available? If your pet has a high fever, follow these recommendations:

  • wet ears, groin and paw pads with cold water;
  • You can put a wet towel on your head;
  • move the dog to a cool place (on the tiles in the bathroom, on the balcony, etc.);
  • Give your pet cold fresh water;
  • mix three drugs in a syringe: No-Shpu, Analgin and Diphenhydramine (check the dosage with your doctor by phone, it is calculated by the weight of the animal) and inject this mixture intramuscularly into the dog.

How to reduce a dog's temperature and avoid severe dehydration? To do this, inject saline solution under the skin on the withers using a syringe (up to 50 ml for small dogs, up to 200 ml for large dogs).

If the measures taken are not enough, try to call a specialist at home or take your pet to a veterinary clinic. A high rate is a sign of illness; it can be a symptom of tick-borne piroplasmosis, viral enteritis, postpartum eclampsia or ordinary poisoning.

If there are other symptoms (loose stools, change in the color or smell of urine, poor appetite, trembling in the body, etc.), be sure to tell your veterinarian about them.

What is the norm?

Dogs' temperatures are normally higher than humans'. It is 37.5-39 °C. It varies for specific animals, as it depends on several factors:

  • breeds;
  • gender;
  • age;
  • physiological state;
  • individual characteristics.

For a small breed puppy, the norm is approximately 39 °C. In an adult large breed, the normal temperature may be significantly lower. The value of the indicator increases in dogs in hot weather, after physical exertion, from excitement, fear, and when bitches are in heat.

As an example, let's look at the normal temperature in animals:

  • small breed puppy – 38.6–39.3 °C;
  • adult small breed dog – 38.5–39.0 °C;
  • medium breed puppy – 38.3–39.1 °C;
  • adult medium breed dog – 37.5–39.0 °C;
  • large breed puppy – 38.2–39.0 °C;
  • adult large breed dog – 37.4–38.3 °C.

Body temperature in dogs is an individual indicator. This is clearly visible in the example.

What should be the normal body temperature?

It has been noted that different representatives of small breeds may have different temperatures . Below are several of the most common breeds and their inherent body temperature conditions:

  • terrier – 38.5-38.9°C;
  • spaniel – 38.0-39.5°C;
  • Spitz – 38.0-39.0°C;
  • pinscher – 37.5-38.0 °C;
  • beagle – 38.4-38.7°C;
  • bichon – 38.0-39.2°C;
  • pug – 38.0-39.9°C;
  • lap dog – 38.5-38.9°C;
  • Pekingese – 38.5-38.8°C;
  • dachshund – 38.0-39.5°C;
  • Chihuahua – 38.0-39.5°C.

When should measurements be taken?

If your dog is absolutely healthy, then there is no need to take daily measurements. You just need to know what temperature is normal for your beloved pet.

Healthy breeding puppies are recommended to have regular measurements on a regular schedule from birth. This indicator should be measured before and after childbirth. Its value determines how soon the dog will give birth to puppies. As a rule, the temperature drops significantly before childbirth. It also needs to be measured before and after vaccinations.

If your condition is poor, measure your pet’s body temperature regularly (morning and evening). Get a special notebook. You will make daily notes in it.

How to try it on?

Emergency situations, in which your pet's life is often at stake, happen quite often, and in order to always be prepared for this or that incident, it is very important to be able to independently measure the temperature of your miniature pet.

To know for sure whether it’s worth disturbing your pet again, you need to pay attention to its behavior.

If the changes below are observed, then the temperature must be measured:

A pathological condition, in whatever form it may be, is the first sign that your four-legged friend’s temperature has increased or decreased.

To measure your dog's temperature at home, you need to do the following:

Signs and causes of temperature deviation from normal

Many owners assess the condition of their pet by its nose. They consider a dry, hot nose a sign of health problems. This information is a myth. A dry, warm nose at night is normal. Animals do not lick it while sleeping. Dry nose in dogs is not a reason to visit the veterinary clinic.

A healthy animal looks cheerful. It actively reacts to events, eats normally, and plays. The dog's coat is shiny and tight-fitting. A sick animal exhibits the opposite characteristics. The following signs of ill health are identified: fever in a puppy or an adult dog, refusal to eat throughout the day, lethargy, restlessness (with severe pain), vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, rapid heartbeat, breathing.

If the above symptoms are observed, then measure your body temperature and see if it is normal. The reasons for its changes may be diseases and infections. High values occur with plague, piroplasmosis, endometritis, and heat stroke. A decrease occurs with parvovirus enteritis, helminthic infestation and other diseases.

Signs of increased or decreased temperature in an animal

Muzzle for a pug: which harness and collar is better

The following symptoms will indicate a low temperature in a Labrador, Shepherd or a representative of any other breed:

  • general lethargy;
  • weak pulse filling;
  • arrhythmia (at temperatures below 30 ° C);
  • disturbance of brain activity (temperature below 32 °C);
  • rare shallow breathing;
  • muscle stiffness;
  • reduction/absence of bowel sounds.

An elevated temperature is indicated by the dog’s anxiety, which seeks to find the coldest corner in the house. Although in the summer such behavior does not cause suspicion.

How to determine?

The measurement is made with a thermometer (electronic or mercury). It is recommended to use an electronic thermometer. The measurement procedure will last no more than a minute. A mercury thermometer is not as fast-acting. To obtain reliable information, they need to measure their temperature for 3-5 minutes. The only advantage of a mercury thermometer is its low price.

Buy a separate thermometer for your beloved puppy or adult dog. Family members should not use it for hygienic reasons. Reset the scale to zero before use. To make the procedure less unpleasant, lubricate the tip of the thermometer with Vaseline.

The pet will not like measuring body temperature, since it will be carried out rectally. During the procedure, talk to the animal, call it affectionately, calm it down, stroke it, treat it with some treat.

When inserting the thermometer, the dog can be positioned in one of the following two positions:

  1. lying on your side;
  2. standing.

For inexperienced owners, the first method is suitable. For dogs in a lying position, you will need to raise the tail and slowly insert the prepared thermometer into the anus 1-2 cm (depending on the size of the animal).

A calm, quiet environment should reign in the room during the procedure. During the first measurement, the dog experiences excitement and fear. Hold your pet when inserting the thermometer. The animal can twitch, jump up, break the thermometer, and injure itself.

After the procedure, it is very important to feed the animal something tasty, but before that, wash the thermometer in warm water with soap and disinfect it with alcohol. Don't forget to wash and disinfect your hands.

If you wish, you can teach the puppy to a specific command (for example, “treat”, “thermometer”). If your dog understands, it will be very easy to take measurements in the future. The pet, hearing the command, will allow you to measure the temperature and will calmly wait for the end of the procedure.

How to raise the lowered one?

The reasons for a decrease in body temperature in a dog are quite varied, especially when it comes to small breeds of dogs that are more prone to a decrease in temperature.

Among the most common reasons for a decrease in temperature are the following:

  • all kinds of internal diseases of the pet (disorders of the nervous system, diseases of the thyroid gland, vascular, cardiovascular systems), including fractures and external injuries;
  • prolonged exposure to a cold environment, exposure to low temperatures ;
  • long-term anesthesia and any operations in the thoracic and abdominal area.

Having figured out the reason for the decrease in the dog’s body temperature, you can move on to methods that help increase it:

  1. First of all, a dog with a low temperature must be calmed down , or in the best case, picked up, thereby trying to calm the animal’s possible tremors. In order to provide first aid to your pet before the veterinarian arrives, you should remember that now, more than ever, a dog with a low temperature needs warmth and comfort.
  2. Wrap your pet in a warm blanket , which, if possible, should be placed near the radiator or in some warm room. You can also cover the animal with pillows, rubber heating pads with warm (not hot) water, offer warm water or broth, which can briefly restore strength and energy to the pet.
  3. As the animal's condition improves or worsens, measure its body temperature and draw appropriate conclusions.

What to do if the temperature is elevated (lowered)?

The deviation of this indicator from the normal value is a sign of the body’s fight against infection, a symptom of the disease. If you find that your dog's body temperature has increased (decreased), do not try to influence it on your own. Normal values may be obtained in this way, but it will not be possible to get rid of a disease or infection this way.

Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible and call him to your home. Due to delay, valuable minutes are lost and the animal’s condition worsens. You can take your pet to the veterinary clinic. If your pet's thermometer shows above 40 °C, then apply something cool to its body during transportation. Be careful. The dog should not become hypothermic. If the animal has a low temperature (below 36.5 °C), then apply a warm heating pad to its body and cover it with a blanket.

Do not give your animal medications at your own discretion. They will only worsen the situation, because the causes of deviations in body temperature from the norm in dogs are infections, tumors, endocrine diseases, and toxins.

Veterinary clinic specialists will be able to quickly and correctly diagnose and prescribe the necessary medications. Try to do everything that veterinarians recommend. Do not stop self-prescribed medications after your dog’s condition improves. This can only be done by a doctor who is confident that the dog’s normal temperature will no longer change, the animal is completely healthy and there is absolutely no threat to its life.

Chronic diseases and temperature fluctuations in small dogs

Metabolic disorders, allergic reactions, and low-grade inflammatory processes are often accompanied by chills or fever in the animal during an exacerbation. Dog owners need to be aware of diseases that may be indicated by periodic increases or decreases in temperature.

A dog’s body temperature sometimes fluctuates due to chronic pathologies:

  • parasitic infections: infection with protozoa and worms;
  • inflammation of the genitourinary system;
  • chronic bacterial, fungal and viral infections in various parts of the body;
  • improper functioning of the thyroid gland;
  • allergic reactions.

Temperature fluctuations also provoke acute conditions:

  • hypothermia;
  • purulent wounds, abscesses;
  • severe tissue burns;
  • internal bleeding;
  • intoxication after consuming stale foods or chemicals.

How to downgrade?

Among the reasons for increased temperature in small breed dogs are:

  • poor resistance to stress, nervous experiences ;
  • sunstroke or heatstroke due to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight;
  • inflammation both inside the animal’s body and outside (inflammation of a wound, fracture);
  • the body's reaction to viral diseases , an infection that has entered the body and its further spread.

You can lower body temperature in small breed dogs in the following ways:

  1. Move the animal to a cool room , periodically ventilating it, opening windows, turning on the air conditioner or fan.
  2. Offer the animal cool water ; in the most difficult situations, pour the drink into the pet’s mouth through a syringe.
  3. Try to alleviate your pet's condition by moistening a towel with water and applying it to the animal's sides, back, and inner thighs.
  4. If the animal’s condition does not improve and the temperature remains high (40 degrees), use antipyretics .

When making a faithful four-legged friend, remember that we and only we are responsible for maintaining the health and well-being of those we have tamed. Only a responsible approach to treating your pet will allow him to spend a long and happy life side by side with you.
