Mexidol for cats is used to treat circulatory disorders in the brain. The drug Mexidol-Vet is used in veterinary medicine very often when preparing an animal for surgery and after it, so that the state of anesthesia does not provoke complications. This veterinary drug has no analogues, and it is very difficult to replace it with any drug used for humans.

The purpose of the drug is to restore cerebral circulation after injuries, infectious lesions and long-term anesthesia. Mexidol-veta is produced in the form of an injection solution or tablets. It's easier to give your dog tablets. Feeding them to a cat is always difficult, so in therapy they mainly use the drug in the form of injections.

Action and indications for use

The drug increases the resistance of the pet’s immune system to various external influences and irritants.

Mexidol vet also stimulates blood supply to the brain and improves metabolism in its cells and tissues.

Indications for use are as follows:

  • Prevention of complications caused by the administration of anesthesia. It is used before and after operations.
  • Acute failures: cardiopulmonary and cardiovascular.
  • Diseases in which rapid tissue necrosis occurs due to inflammatory processes with the formation of pus. Such diseases include peritonitis (leakage of pus into the peritoneum), necrotizing pancreatitis.
  • Skin diseases: dermatitis, wounds, ulcers, eczema. Mexidol Vet also helps improve the condition of the skin and coat.
  • Diseases affecting the brain: epilepsy, head injuries, circulatory disorders, etc.
  • Increased physical and emotional stress: competitions, exhibitions, moving, etc.
  • Chronic diseases with mild symptoms in older animals.

The drug Mexidol Vet is used not only for treatment. It can also be used to prevent certain diseases.

Similar medical products

A possible alternative to the drug may be Mexibel.

Absolute analogues are the pharmaceutical preparations "Mexidol" and "Mexidol-Vet", which have identical therapeutic effects and contain the same component as the active substance - ethylmethylhydroxypyridine succinate. In pharmacy chains you can find other analogues of Mexidol, which differ in the list of pathologies for which this or that medicine is effective. So, pharmacists can recommend Mexibel, Mexicor, Mexidant. If you are allergic to the main ingredient in such medications, veterinarians select a replacement that contains another active ingredient, but the therapeutic effect remains unchanged. This could be the medicine “Hypoxen”, “Vitagamma”, “Riluzole”, “Actovegin”. Only the doctor treating the cat should select a replacement.

Instructions for use for dogs

The dosage and regimen depends on the purpose of use of the drug. The tablets are fed to the animal after meals up to 3 times a day. During an exacerbation of the disease, the therapeutic dosage is 10-15 mg per kilogram of weight. After the acute condition is relieved, it is reduced to 5-7.5 mg (prophylactic dose).

If your pet suffers from cardiopulmonary or heart failure, he is given tablets three times a day in a therapeutic dose for 10 days. Then the dosage is reduced by half, and treatment is continued for another 2 weeks. In the chronic form, the tablets are given in courses: up to 4 times a year for 3 weeks (the dog is fed the drug in a prophylactic dose in the morning and evening).

If the animal is planned to undergo anesthesia, the medication is started 2-3 days before the desired date and another 3 days after it in a prophylactic dose twice a day. Before stressful events (exhibitions, competitions, etc.), the drug is given 5 days before them in a similar dosage, twice a day.

For older dogs (after 7-8 years), Mexidol vet is given 5 mg per kilogram of weight for 2-4 weeks every 4 months.

The drug in injection form is used as follows:

  • In case of exacerbation of the disease - 10-15 mg per kilogram during the first 2-3 days, then the dosage is reduced to 5 mg and therapy is continued for another 10-13 days.
  • If the dog is undergoing long-term anesthesia, Mexidol vet is administered in small doses during surgery at a dose of 20 mg per kilogram.
  • For elderly dogs, the medicine is injected into the muscle at a dose of 10 mg per kilogram in the morning and evening, the course duration is 7 days. Then they switch to tablets.

Both tablets and solution combine well with other medications.

Contraindications for use of the product

Like any drug, Mexidol-Vet has its contraindications. It is prohibited to use in acute and chronic renal and liver failure. Use is unacceptable in case of allergic reactions, for example lactose intolerance. If a cat is allergic to lactose, then you can change the form of the medicine - do not give it Mexidol-Vet tablets, but give it injections. Replacement is carried out under the supervision of a doctor.

Can the medicine be given to pregnant cats? According to the instructions, treatment is not prohibited, but must be carried out under the supervision of a doctor. Kittens can be treated starting from 2 months of age, but Mexidol-Vet should not be given to nursing cats.

Cost and analogues

The cost of a package of 50 mg tablets varies from 250 to 300 rubles, 125 mg - 340-400 rubles. A box of solution (10 ampoules) at a dosage of 2.5% or 25 mg costs 320-370 rubles, 5% or 50 mg – 500-550 rubles.

Mexidol vet is a medicine that helps reduce the risk of complications during anesthesia and reduces a dog’s nervousness under stress. The drug is indicated for animals that have problems with the cardiovascular system. It has a low cost and is sold in veterinary pharmacies.

It is used for the treatment and prevention of cardiac, pulmonary, and multiple organ failure, in preparation for surgery and in the postoperative period in order to reduce the negative consequences of general anesthesia. It is used in the treatment of purulent processes of various localization and extent (infections of the skin, soft tissues, trophic ulcers, peritonitis, sepsis). In veterinary geriatrics it is used to maintain the functioning of the body during age-related changes caused by a lack of nutrients in organs and tissues (encephalopathy, dermatitis, neurodermatitis and other diseases associated with circulatory failure).

For whom:

used in dogs and cats.

Leave form:

dispensed in the form of a clear, colorless solution, packaged in light glass ampoules of 1 or 2 ml in a concentration of 2.5% or 5%, respectively. Ampoules are placed in plastic cases of 5 pieces. Two pencil cases along with instructions for use are placed in a cardboard box.

Reviews about “Mexidol-Vet (ampoules, tablets) for dogs and cats”:

For a long time we gave the cat hormonal drugs to prevent her from wandering around. At that time we did not know about the possible complications of frequent use of such drugs. Maybe if we knew that taking such drugs could lead to the same sterilization, but with more deviations, we would not give the pills, but would immediately take him to the doctor. One day I noticed that something was happening to the cat, she began to feel worse, in addition, mucus appeared under her tail. At the hospital we were told that the cat had pyometra (accumulation of pus in the uterus) and urgently needed surgery. The cat was sterilized and the uterus was completely removed, but the worst thing was that her body was so weak that she endured the operation very hard. As a maintenance drug, the doctor prescribed Mexidol-Vet for us; this drug has a beneficial effect on the body, helps it strengthen, in addition, this drug is excellent for animals that have suffered complex infectious diseases. I injected Mexidol-Vet at home, on my own, once a day, 1 ml, for five days in a row, then for another five days, 0.5 ml. In general, I can say that the drug helped, and gradually the cat began to come to its senses, although at first I generally thought that we would not be able to save her - she seemed so weak. Mexidol-Vet is a good drug, despite the fact that it does not cure anything, it perfectly helps animals recover and gain strength for recovery.

We injected our dog with Mexidol after allergic dermatitis caused complications and non-healing ulcers appeared on the body. We never found the root cause, but apparently it all started against the background of allergies and improper treatment. In general, we treated the dog with many drugs, and this time the veterinarian gave us a treatment regimen in which Mexidol was one of the main components. The course of treatment lasted 10 days, and a month later there was another repeat for 10 days. During the first course, we injected all the drugs at the full dose, and in the second course we reduced the dose by half. The drug was injected intramuscularly, and I want to say that the injection was quite painful; Mexidol clearly stood out against the background of injections of other drugs. Immediately after the injections, no improvement was visible, but after the second course, positive changes were noticeable almost immediately. The skin began to regenerate and after some time, hair began to appear on the body. In general, I liked the effect of Mexidol and in combination with other drugs it really works. But to get results from this drug, you need to find an intelligent veterinarian who can make an accurate diagnosis and select the correct treatment regimen. Everything worked out for us because we managed to find a good doctor. I can say with confidence that the drug perfectly helps with skin problems and has no side effects.

Mexidol was prescribed to our cat for calcivirosis. They prescribed a lot of things, from antibiotics and antivirals to glucose. Including Mexidol. Mexidol was injected intramuscularly (at the clinic they can do it intravenously, but we did not conduct experiments). Mexidol does not have a specific therapeutic effect, but maintains the general condition of the animal, stimulates the immune system and metabolism, so it is difficult to discuss its effectiveness. But nevertheless, using the regimen prescribed by the doctor, we cured the cat in literally 3-4 days, and then we completed the injections for the practically healthy animal, which was not at all happy with such manipulations. So, in combination and when used correctly, Mexidol is an excellent addition to the overall treatment regimen.

Mexidol-Vet tablets contain 50 mg or 125 mg of Mexidol (ethylmethylhydroxypyridine succinate) as an active ingredient in 1 tablet, as well as auxiliary formative components:

in a tablet containing 50 mg of Mexidol - lactose, potato starch, magnesium or calcium stearate;

in a tablet containing 125 mg of mexidol - lactose, clay

Properties

Mexidol-Vet tablets have pronounced antioxidant, antihypoxic and membrane protective properties, increase the body's resistance to the effects of various damaging factors and oxygen-dependent pathological conditions (shock, hypoxia and ischemia, cerebrovascular accidents). The drug improves the metabolism of brain tissue and their blood supply, stabilizes the membrane structures of blood cells (erythrocytes and platelets), improves microcirculation and rheological properties of blood, and reduces platelet aggregation. Possessing a lipid-lowering effect, it reduces the content of total cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins.

The mechanism of action of Mexidol-Vet is the ability to cause an increase in compensatory activation of aerobic glycolysis and reduce the degree of inhibition of oxidative processes in the Krebs cycle under hypoxic conditions with an increase in the content of ATP and creatine phosphate; activate the energy-synthesizing function of mitochondria.

Mexidol-Vet inhibits lipid peroxidation, increases the activity of superoxide dismutase, modulates the activity of enzymes and membrane receptor complexes, improving synaptic transmission and transport of mediators.

When administered orally, Mexidol-Vet is quickly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and enters the blood, organs and tissues of the animal. It is excreted from the body in the urine, mainly in glucurone-conjugated form.

Indications for use

Mexidol-Vet tablets (Tabulettae Mexidol - Vet) is a medicine for the treatment and prevention of diseases in dogs and cats accompanied by oxygen deficiency, increased content of peroxide compounds, as well as for the normalization of immunobiological resistance.

Dosage and method of administration

Mexidol-Vet tablets are prescribed to dogs and cats for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes independently and in complex therapy for the following indications: for acute and chronic cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary failure; for the purpose of preventing anesthesia and post-anesthesia complications, in the post-traumatic and postoperative periods, including in case of traumatic brain injuries; for pathologies of the skin (dermatitis, eczema, trophic ulcers, wounds) to improve the condition of the skin and hair; during periods of extreme stress associated with the adaptation of animals to new conditions (transportation, participation in exhibitions and competitions); for exogenous-organic diseases of the brain (as a result of previous neuroinfections), acute cerebrovascular accidents, epilepsy, episyndrome, traumatic brain injuries; in veterinary geriatrics for age-related disorders of body functions (sluggish chronic diseases, neurodermatitis, dermatitis associated with impaired peripheral circulation).

Mexidol-Vet tablets are prescribed to dogs and cats orally after feeding in a therapeutic dose 2-3 times a day. The therapeutic dose of the drug depends on the severity of the animal’s clinical condition: in the acute period of the disease, the therapeutic dose is 10–15 mg/kg, then it is reduced to 5.0–7.5 mg/kg of animal weight.

In the treatment of cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary failure, Mexidol-Vet tablets are used at 10–15 mg/kg of animal weight 2–3 times a day for 7–10 days, then the dose of the drug is reduced by 2 times and used for 10 -14 days. In case of chronic pathology, to maintain the therapeutic effect, it is recommended to periodically take the drug 2–4 times a year in courses of 3 weeks at 5.0–7.5 mg/kg of animal weight 2 times a day.

In order to prevent anesthesia and post-anesthesia complications, Mexidol-Vet tablets are prescribed 2-3 days before and for 2-3 days after surgery 2 times a day in a therapeutic dose.

When transporting, participating in exhibitions and competitions, Mexidol-Vet tablets are prescribed in a therapeutic dose 2-3 times a day for 3-5 days before the intended event.

As a therapeutic and prophylactic agent in veterinary geriatrics (“Care for Old Animals”) Mexidol-Vet tablets are used for dogs and cats older than 7 years, 2 times a day, 5 mg/kg body weight for 15–30 days. A repeat course is carried out after 3–4 months.

The dose, course duration and frequency of use of the drug are determined by the attending veterinarian depending on the physiological state of the animal and the course of the disease.

In severe pathological conditions of the animal, the use of the drug begins with parenteral administration of Mexidol-Vet injection solution, followed by transition to oral administration of Mexidol-Vet tablets.

The use of Mexidol-Vet tablets does not exclude the use of other means of pathogenetic and symptomatic therapy.

Side effects

As a rule, there are no side effects or complications when using the drug in accordance with these instructions.

Contraindications

Reviews of the drug from cat owners

Mexidol was prescribed to our animals for traumatic brain injuries, strokes, epilepsy, poisoning and pancreatitis. What I remembered offhand. All diagnoses are more than serious and the use of this drug was justified.

The cat is 11 years old (Persian)... He lost his appetite and began to lose a lot of weight. At the veterinary clinic they drove away the worms, it was very difficult for me... Now we have been prescribed Mexidol Vet intramuscularly at 0.4. It is clear that the injections are very painful: it is clear that immediately after the injection the cat falls on its hind legs.
