Composition and release form

Fosprenil is a sterile solution intended for injection. The clear liquid is usually colorless, but may have a slightly yellow tint. The drug is packaged in bottles made of transparent glass. To maintain tightness and sterility, the bottles are sealed with rubber stoppers and closed with aluminum caps. The package volume can be 10 or 50 ml.

The active component of the drug is disodium salt of polyprenols phosphate. It is of natural origin, as it is obtained from special substances of pine needles. They determine the pharmacological properties of Fosprenil.

The solution also includes auxiliary components:

  • twin-80;

The drug should be stored at a temperature of 4 to 25 degrees Celsius, away from ultraviolet radiation. If sediment appears in the bottle, the solution must be discarded.

How to use Fosprenil for cats?

As we mentioned above, “Fosprenil” is a stimulator of the body’s natural protective functions, capable of not only resisting infections of viral etiology, but also building immunity against relapses of infection. “Fosprenil” actively affects hematopoiesis, enhancing the anti-inflammatory functions of the blood, accelerating metabolism.

Thanks to these properties, the drug is used not only in the treatment of viruses, but also to relieve peritonitis or hepatitis, diseases of the digestive tract. Medicine is prescribed even in cases where the exact nature of the infection is not clear, as an “ambulance”. Fosprenil also prevents the development of pathogenic microflora and promotes the restoration of healthy ones.

When to use

The instructions indicate that Fosprenil is used for dogs with the following pathologies:

  • plague of carnivores (distemper);
  • infectious hepatitis;
  • rhinotracheitis;
  • infectious peritonitis;
  • viral enteritis;
  • viral adenoviruses;
  • other infectious diseases.

A sterile solution can be given to pets in various ways:

  • intramuscularly;
  • subcutaneously;
  • intravenously;
  • orally.

Fosprenil can be used to wash the eyes and nose, but in this case it is diluted with clean water in a 1:1 ratio. To make the medication more effective, intramuscular injections are given. Preference is given to injections into a vein in severe cases of the disease to achieve maximum rapid effect.

Doses and treatment regimens

The dosage of Fosprenil for dogs is calculated taking into account the weight of the animal - 0.1 ml per 1 kg of weight. For severe pathologies, the dose is doubled. If it is necessary to administer a large volume of medication, it is recommended to do this in several places. When administered orally, the dose is doubled.

The treatment regimen may vary depending on the pathology:

  1. If an animal is diagnosed with infectious peritonitis or plague and the disease is severe, the first two days the drug is administered 4 times a day (every 6 hours), then for a week - 3 times a day with an interval of 8 hours. Then two injections are given for two days and one for another two days. The regimen is followed even if the symptoms have disappeared.
  2. In case of moderate severity of plague, as well as hepatitis, enteritis, on the first day the animal is given 4 injections with an interval of 6 hours. Then for a week the injections are given three times a day, then another two days with 2 injections and two days with 1.
  3. If infectious diseases are mild, the animal is given three doses on the first day. On the second day, 2 doses with an interval of 12 hours are enough, on the third – 1 dose. The duration of treatment can be increased to 5-7 days depending on the condition of the pet.
  4. For plague, the duration of treatment is at least 14 days, regardless of the condition of the animal.

Features of application

The treatment regimen can be changed by the doctor depending on the condition of the dog, the characteristics of the body and the symptoms present. To achieve the fastest possible therapeutic effect and avoid possible complications, Fosprenil is combined with antibacterial and antihistamine drugs, as well as drugs whose action is aimed at detoxification, restoration of water-salt balance and elimination of symptoms. To enhance the therapeutic effect, it is combined with interferon, but additional use of immunostimulating agents is usually not required.

To prevent infectious diseases, the medication is given to animals once. In this case, the dosage remains the same as during treatment. Preventive measures are carried out in the following cases:

  • during epidemic outbreaks;
  • when traveling to a region with a high danger threshold;
  • upon contact with sick animals.

To enhance immunity during vaccination, the medicine is also administered once in the doses given above. For revaccination, the use of medication is not required. The drug is administered together with the vaccine, but in different places.

It is not recommended to skip taking the medicine. This inevitably leads to a decrease in its effectiveness. If a timely dose is missed, the dog should be given the medicine as soon as possible, and then return to the current treatment regimen.

Despite the fact that Fosprenil is considered a safe medicine, it should not be used without consulting a doctor. In addition, its use is most effective in complex treatment, which should only be prescribed by a veterinarian.

Owner reviews

Irina, owner of a 3-month-old puppy:

“I learned about Fosprenil from a breeder friend. She uses it to vaccinate animals. There was a place for it in my first aid kit. Once used to treat a severely inflamed eyelid in a puppy. The sight was terrible, but after 2 days of use the baby felt better. Subcutaneous injections were given for 10 days. The medicine helped us avoid a complex operation.”

Alexander, bulldog owner:

“Our dog suffered from parvovirus enteritis as a puppy. After a walk outside, the dog suddenly became ill. Severe vomiting and diarrhea with blood, the howling did not stop almost all night. In the morning we went to the hospital. After the examination, they gave me a double dose of Fosprenil. Symptomatic treatment was also prescribed. The pet's improvement occurred only on the 5th day, but, as it turned out, many puppies die from this disease. I believe that Fosprenil saved our Bax’s life.”

Dosage and Application

The dosage for the treatment of viral diseases is 0.1-02 ml per 1 kilogram of pet weight. The medicine is administered intramuscularly. If the disease is serious, the dose can be doubled. The dosage also depends on the age of the dog. For puppies it is 0.3 ml per 1 kg of weight one time, per day - 0.9-1.3 ml. For adults – 0.2 ml once, no more than 0.8 ml per day. That is, a pet cannot be given more than 4 injections per day.

Fosprenil is also used to prevent viral infections.

For example, you are going to an exhibition where your dog will encounter a large number of other animals. Or you know that your pet has definitely had contact with an infected animal. In such cases, a single daily dose is administered. You can carry out only one preventive injection in three days.
