Presidential dogs: Vladimir Putin's favorite pets

Taigan (Kyrgyz greyhound) Sherkhan

On March 28, 2021, Vladimir Vladimirovich met with the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sooronbai Jeenbekov. The latter, as a sign of exceptional respect for the President of the Russian Federation, presented him with a rare gift - a six-month-old Taigan puppy.

The Taigan is an ancient indigenous Kyrgyz breed that belongs to the hunting class. If you literally translate the name from Kyrgyz, you get “catch up and kill.” The first mentions can be found in the Kyrgyz epic. Bogatyr Manas was the owner of a Taigan named Kumayik.

The peculiarity of taigans is their adaptability to hunting at altitudes of more than 2 thousand meters; they reach speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour. Kyrgyz greyhounds reach 60-70 cm at the withers and are very similar in appearance to Kazakh greyhounds.

Unfortunately, today the Kyrgyz greyhounds are on the verge of extinction. There are no more than a thousand purebred Taigans left in the country; in Kyrgyzstan, the dog is considered national pride. Outside the country, little is known about it; you almost never see it at exhibitions; it is truly exotic. Therefore, Sooronbai Jeenbekov chose this wonderful dog as a gift.

Sherkhan was presented to the head of Russia during his visit to Bishkek (March 2019) by the President of Kyrgyzstan.

Sharplana Shepherd Dog Pasha

And even earlier, on January 17, 2021, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic presented Putin with a Sharplana Shepherd puppy. The baby was named Pasha.

The history of the breed dates back to 1938, when they were first bred in the Balkans. The following year, the breed was already registered by the FCI as the Illyrian Shepherd Dog, and since 1957 as the Sharplaninsky. For many years, dogs of this breed remained a mystery to the whole world, because the Yugoslav authorities simply did not allow shepherd dogs to be exported outside the country. Only in 1970 the first Sharplanin Shepherd Dog was exported abroad. In recent years, Sharplanin Shepherd Dogs have become popular due to their stable nature.

Characteristic features of the breed:

  • It has high endurance and can easily survive in cold conditions, thanks to its warm wool;
  • They have a calm and balanced character;
  • There is an opinion that Sharplanin shepherd dogs are capricious, but in fact the owner is the highest authority for them;

How Yume Almost Got a Fiancé

In 2021, before Vladimir Putin’s visit to Japan, it was planned to present him with another representative of the Akita Inu breed, this time a “boy”. But the president politely refused to accept such a gift.

So that the Japanese government would not take the refusal as an insult, Vladimir Vladimirovich brought Yume to a meeting with journalists before his departure to Japan. He showed that the dog was in excellent shape, cheerful and playful. But Putin also told reporters that his pet has a quick temper. And, if you bring her a “groom,” they will soon have puppies. And the president already has several pets, and he simply cannot devote time and attention to all of them.

Alabai Verny

Putin also received his Alabai as a gift. The puppy was presented by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in 2021. Putin liked the dog immediately, he took the little one in his arms and kissed him on the head. After which the puppy hid, but not because he didn’t like his new owner. Alabais are very wary of strangers and Verny needs time to get used to and get to know each other.

This is not an easy gift; in Turkmenistan, alabai are also a national treasure and the pride of the country. The uniqueness of the Alabais is that they were not bred artificially. Since ancient times, they have been used to protect flocks of sheep or for service. According to unconfirmed reports, the breed has existed on the planet for several millennia! It is very difficult to export the Alabai outside of Turkmenistan, since the export of dogs of this breed is prohibited.

An interesting fact is that in the 1930s, they tried to en masse attract Alabaevs to the civil service of the USSR. It was not possible to do this, since dogs have a very capricious character. In terms of care and training, Alabais are difficult dogs, but very strong-willed and strong. Putin definitely liked this gift.

All Vladimir Putin's dogs for 2021

Previously, the family had another small dog - the toy poodle Tosya, which, according to some sources, the family acquired on their own. But Vladimir Putin does not currently have this dog. It is believed that after divorcing her wife, Lyudmila took the poodle with her.

In 2021, in honor of Putin’s birthday, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov presented an Alabai puppy named Verny as a gift. The 65th birthday gift was presented with the words: “We have one friend - you probably know, this is a dog, Alabay. And today I brought a little Alabai with me.” However, there is almost no information about this dog.

Putin’s first dog, named Buffy, who lived in the family for many years, died. Although, according to some reports, this information is considered inaccurate, since the presidential press secretary refused to give any information on this topic. However, this dog is believed to be gone. Thus, as of 2021, Vladimir Putin has three dogs: a Bulgarian shepherd named Buffy, a Japanese Akita Inu named Yume and an Alabai named Verny.

Akita Inu Yume

Yume is a real exotic star of Vladimir Vladimirovich’s collection of animals. Putin chose the nickname personally, giving it a special meaning: Yume means “Dream” in Japanese. The governor of the Japanese prefecture of Akita, Norihisa Satake, presented the puppy to the president with gratitude for his help in eliminating natural disasters. Putin happily said that the gift was cute, and in response he kindly gave the governor a Siberian cat.

Putin took Yume with him to interviews with Japanese journalists. The animal showed excellent upbringing and a generally healthy and cheerful appearance, as the press representatives themselves noted. Yume is now in her seventh year.

The Akita Inu's appearance is largely the result of nature, not man. During the period of feudal rule, Akita Inu were used to guard the royal family and nobility. From the 16th to the early 19th centuries, Akita Inus were used as fighting dogs, which subsequently affected their behavior in general. That is why Yume requires increased attention and training from Putin, since she is not easy to train.

Interesting Facts:

  • Akita Inu is declared a natural monument in Japan;
  • “Inu” means dog in Japanese, the name literally translates as “dog from Akita”;
  • As Putin himself noted, Yume is a strict dog;
  • Akita Inu is quite difficult to train; dogs of this breed are prone to aggression;
  • In 2013, Putin had a photo shoot with Yume and Buffy, another pet.

How is the dog feeling today?

Now Verny is a young Alabai, healthy, brave, independent and devoted. His character fully corresponds to his nickname.

Verny lives in the presidential residence in Novo-Ogarevo along with V.V. Putin’s other dogs.

But there is one problem: he doesn’t get along well with other dogs due to his natural characteristics. Even a thrown piece of meat often causes a fight, after which the dogs can no longer make peace.

NOTE!

Despite his high intelligence, Verny is distinguished by amazing stubbornness and strength of character; it is almost impossible to force the dog to do what he does not want.

Therefore, the staff of the presidential nursery had to work hard on training and training.

Bulgarian Shepherd Buffy

Buffy was given to Putin by the Prime Minister of Bulgaria back in 2010. The puppy was bred in the personal kennel of Boyk Borisov, it is not surprising that he chose just such a present. Although the press was surprised by this.

Upon returning to Russia, Putin announced a competition for the best name for a pet. The whole country chose the name for the shepherd dog, and a boy named Dima won. Subsequently, Putin invited him to personally meet the puppy. The meeting took place in December of the same year, and Dima also received a gift from the president - an autographed ball.

Interestingly, the famous Russian poet Orlusha wrote a witty poem about this. In his work, the poet ridicules topical problems.

The Bulgarian Shepherd, or Karakachan dog, is one of the oldest herding breeds in the Balkans. The breed is not recognized by the FCI, but is nevertheless classified and certified. The dog is ideal for protection, has a calm and balanced disposition. They are not friendly to other animals, but get along well with people.

Putin himself is happy with the pet, as he later noted that he loves him very much. To crossbreed Buffy, a request was sent to Bulgaria to obtain a female of the same breed.

Large and beautiful Bulgarian Shepherd

Buffy is the name of a large beauty, and the breed of Putin's dog, given by the Bulgarian Prime Minister, is the Bulgarian Shepherd. Otherwise it is called the Karakachan dog. This president received the gift upon arriving in Sofia. At that time, Putin was still prime minister. He was truly delighted and very happy about such a beautiful and fluffy present.

Right in front of the cameras, Vladimir Vladimirovich kissed and hugged the puppy, and after a while he left with him for Moscow. At birth, the dog received the nickname Yorko - God of War. But the president decided to rename the dog by organizing a nationwide competition. The winner was five-year-old Dima, who suggested the nickname Buffy.

At that time, Connie was still alive, it was 2010. The proud Labrador received her new neighbor with patience. However, when Buffy began to play and torment Connie, she growled at him. But it didn’t end with the 2nd dog!

Labrador Connie Polgrave (Kony for short)

Perhaps Putin’s most famous and beloved pet remains his first dog, a black Labrador named Koni. It was presented to Putin in 1999 by the former head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the current Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu.

Kony often appeared in photo reports from Vladimir Putin’s meetings with various high-ranking officials. In 2007, Putin took Kony to a meeting with Angela Merkel, who is terribly afraid of dogs. The president subsequently apologized for the animal’s behavior. They joked about this topic in opposition circles, expressing their dissatisfaction with the political regime. On the eve of the elections, an online vote was organized on the future president of the Russian Federation, in which Koni was in the lead (37% of the votes). As a joke, Putin has repeatedly stated that Koni will become his successor. Unfortunately, this did not happen; Koni died in 2014.

The Labrador is a very multifunctional dog. They are used not only as companions, but also as guides and caregivers. It is not surprising that Kony became the president’s favorite, whom he took with him everywhere. Labradors have an easy-going and friendly character. Initially, Labradors were black, like Putin, only then the breed standard began to include fawn and chocolate.

Among other things, Kony became the heroine of the Ogonyok comics, which described Putin’s life through the eyes of a dog.

How picky?

The president's Alabai is perhaps his only pet who is absolutely not picky about food . He can eat completely simple food, such as porridge with meat, which he is fed 3 times a day.

Thousands of years of selection are taking its toll. Such a dog will take all the necessary substances even from simple porridge and will be full and satisfied. Moreover, this will not affect the dog’s appearance or performance at all.

The same can be said about the content.

The pet does not require much care or special conditions, although in the presidential nursery they are exemplary . The dog is not only well looked after, but all its needs are met, one of which is the need for activity and exercise.

Often the president himself pays attention to his pet.

Offspring of the Presidential Labrador Connie

Koni gave birth to her offspring on December 7, 2003, just on the day of the parliamentary elections in Russia. 8 healthy puppies were born. Putin stated that he wants to give the puppies to good hands:

  • one of her children serves the City Unified Rescue Service in Vladikavkaz;
  • another son, Connie, was handed over to pensioner Alexey Belevets;
  • the happy owner of another puppy was a girl, Katya Sergeenkova from Smolensk;
  • the other two puppies were given as a gift to the former President of Austria, Thomas Klestil.

Alexey named the puppy Darina, and she gave birth to 11 puppies. So, Koni managed to become a grandmother.

Buffy

Buffy is a large beautiful dog, representing the breed of Bulgarian Shepherd Dogs, Karakachan dogs, with long hair of brown, white and black colors. The charming puppy was presented as a gift to V. Putin (then Prime Minister) in November 2010 by Boyko Borisov, Prime Minister of Bulgaria.

Vladimir Vladimirovich came on a visit to Sofia at that time.

At birth, the dog was named Yorgo, but Vladimir Vladimirovich did not like this name. Already in Moscow, following the results of an announced all-Russian competition, the puppy was given a more euphonious name - Buffy.

Putin was delighted with the fluffy gift, later named Buffy

Other Presidential Animals

The former wife of the president also had a dog. Also in 1999, Putin gave his wife a toy poodle, Tosya. In 2013, the couple divorced, and Lyudmila took Tosya with her. The fate of the poodle remains unknown.

Vladimir Vladimirovich is distinguished by his love not only for dogs, but also for all our smaller brothers. In 2003, Putin was symbolically presented with a white goat in honor of the coming year. The goat was named Skazka.

In 2008, on the occasion of the president’s birthday, he was given a little tiger cub Masha. For some time Masha lived in the Novo-Ogarevo residence, and later moved to the zoo in Gelendzhik.

Putin also loves horses. He has quite a lot of them:

  1. The first horse was presented to the president in 2000. The Oryol trotter was given to him by Yegor Stroev, the former governor of the Oryol region.
  2. In 2001, Putin’s nursery was replenished with an Akhal-Teke stallion, with the help of Murtaza Rakhimov, the then president of Bashkiria.
  3. From the King of Jordan, Putin received three “Arabs”: the mare Aizis, the stallions Ibn Maruf and Hakim. Later, Musharraf sent two more Arabian horses.
  4. Saparmurat Niyazov, and later Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov, both heads of Turkmenistan, presented Putin with Akhal-Teke horses as a present.
  5. In Nalchik, Putin received a horse named Kazbich of the Kabardian breed as a gift from Kabardino-Balkaria and others.

The title of the most famous horse of the president is honorably occupied by Vadik. This mini horse is only 54 cm tall. All of Putin’s pets are located at his residence in Novo-Ogarevo.

The President's attitude towards his pet

The fact that the Russian president loves animals is evidenced by numerous photos and videos in which V. Putin is surrounded by pets.

And how the president perceived the “living gift” from the Turkmen leader can be seen by watching the video from the meeting. In it V.V. Putin takes the puppy in his arms and kisses his forehead.

The president’s reverent attitude towards animals has long been known, as well as the fact that he loves dogs very much, including his Faithful Alabai.

He appreciates animals for their loyalty, friendliness and affection . According to V. Putin himself, dogs sometimes help resolve political contradictions and interhuman conflicts.

But the main thing is that they love not for status, money or nationality, they just love. Also, according to the president, he is upset that it is impossible to take a pet with you on long trips.

Most politicians are aware of the Russian president's passion for dogs, and therefore often give him puppies of various breeds, thereby expressing respect.

All about Putin's dogs
Vladimir Putin is known as a big dog lover. Leaders of other countries often present these animals to him as a gift.

How many dogs does Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin have? As observations show, Putin has at least three dogs:

1 . Buffy , a beautiful and large dog of the Karakachan breed, also called the Bulgarian Shepherd. In 2010, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov gave Putin a Bulgarian Shepherd puppy named Buffy.

2 . Yume (translated from Japanese as “Dream”), a dog of the Atika-Inu breed. It was presented by the head of the Japanese Akita prefecture in 2012.

3. A dog named Verny , Alabai breed, found an owner in the person of Vladimir Vladimirovich on October 10, 2021. The head of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, knowing about Putin’s love for dogs, gave him this wonderful birthday gift.

Labrador Connie

The president’s most famous “friend” is Connie the Labrador! Alas, she died in 2014. She was 15 years old at the time—more than advanced age for a dog.

This is the first female dog received during the presidency. Vladimir Putin received it as a gift from Sergei Shoigu in 2000. The gift was symbolic, because the dog was born in 1999, when Putin became the successor of Boris Yeltsin. in the presidential post - one might say, when he was born as the head of the Russian Federation. Putin fell in love with her, took her with him to many meetings, and introduced Connie to many guests of the residence. She became the heroine of many stories, comics, and even has her own page on Wikipedia. They even published a book about the Labrador, Connie's Stories, in which the story was told from the dog's point of view about how she sees the President of Russia.

One day, Putin invited German Chancellor Angela Merkel to his residence for important negotiations, and decided to honor the guest by introducing him to his beloved dog. Angela had no idea about this, and, as it turned out later, she was even a little afraid of dogs, which is clearly visible in the photo.

Putin and Merkel talk in the presence of Connie the dog

Later, Vladimir Vladimirovich even had to apologize to Angela, but Putin did not hesitate to repeatedly joke with the German Chancellor on this topic.

Bulgarian Shepherd Buffy

Buffy is a male Bulgarian Shepherd, or otherwise the Karakachan breed. This breed is very popular in Bulgaria due to its impressive size and enormous potential for development and training, and its pronounced habits as a guard of the territory. The President received a puppy as a gift from the Prime Minister of Bulgaria in early November 2010. Then Putin, being prime minister, flew to Bulgaria on a business visit. Vladimir Vladimirovich immediately liked the dog, he hugged and kissed the dog to the delight of the journalists and everyone present.

At home, the dog was named Yorgo, but it was not very easy to pronounce for a Russian person, and it was decided to rename the puppy. Putin has established a competition throughout Russia to see who can come up with the best name for his dog. The best option turned out to be a boy from Moscow named Dmitry Sokolov (5 years old), it was he who came up with the name “Buffy”.

Later, during one of his home meetings with journalists, Putin said that his first dog, Labrador Connie, accepted the recruit well. But Buffy gets into the habit of annoying Connie with games, and periodically bites her tail and ears, which sometimes causes Connie to growl with displeasure. Apparently, due to her young age, Buffy has not yet found the boundaries that cannot be crossed in the game.

Yume is a male belonging to the rare Akita Inu breed

Prefect Akito gave this dog to Putin to thank Russia and Putin in particular for their help after the strong earthquake in 2012. This breed is indeed very rare and expensive (one of the ten most expensive breeds in the world); in the movie “Hachiko” the dog was of this very breed.

But the most important value of the gift is that in Akito Prefecture the Akita Inu breed is a natural heritage and is protected almost like a panda. Therefore, Putin got not just a puppy, but a part of Japan’s national treasure.

A dog named Faithful

An Alabai puppy named Vepaly (from Turkmen means “faithful”) was presented to the president in Sochi at the CIS summit. And Vladimir Vladimirovich could not resist - he cuddled and played with his new friend right there.

Putin said that his dogs are noble and do not offend little ones: “We have very warm mutual feelings with them!”

In general, little Alabai is in excellent company!

Also in the Putin family were Toy poodles

Putin sits in a chair with his toy poodle Tosya

It all started with the fact that in 1999, his wife wanted a dog, as a result of which Vladimir Putin gave her Tosya, a cute white toy poodle. A year later, there were two poodles - Tosya gave birth to a son, Rodeo, and he happily remained living with his mother.

However, everyone knows that the Putins divorced in 2013, and ex-wife Lyudmila took the poodles with her. However, the president is not discouraged - he has dogs waiting for him at home.

All of Putin's dogs live at his Novo-Ogaryovo residence near Moscow.

Vladimir Putin will have great company on the coming New Year's Eve! After all, the Year of the Dog will begin when the chimes strike! And, as psychics say, for the sake of happiness and good luck, he should be met with dogs. And the more there are, the better! The leader of the Russian Federation has no problems with this.

"Privy Advisor to the President"

There was a lot of talk about Connie among the people and the press. There were also people who, jokingly, called her “the secret adviser to the president,” involved in solving state issues. There was another joke related to Putin's Labrador. “Witty” journalists called Connie Vladimir Vladimirovich’s successor, predicting her the presidency in 2008. There were liberals who were ready to vote for her. The opposition even conducted a survey, according to which about 40% of voters were ready to vote for Connie if she were nominated. However, Dmitry Medvedev did not give up his position and became the next president of the Russian Federation.

A book, “Connie Tells,” was even published on behalf of the Labrador. This literary work presents stories from the dog's point of view about the owner's life. It is noteworthy that the book was published in English and is aimed at learning a foreign language by young children.

In 2007, in honor of Vladimir Vladimirovich’s favorite, a memorial sign was erected on the playground in St. Petersburg (Primorsky Avenue). Residents of the area believe that the sculpture will prevent developments from expanding into their yard and area. The monument is protected by a wrought-iron fence and has the inscription: “To the President’s best friend, Connie the dog.”
